CELTS vs. LATINOS
Posted: 09 Apr 2006, 17:52
Promoting bouts using ethnicity used to be a big tool for promoters back in the day. The Jew vs. Irish of Ross-McLarnin and Italian vs. Jew of Canzoneri-Ross are prime examples. But racial hypersensitivity, political correctness and the culture of victimhood would not permit this sort of thing happening today.
Looking at the history of Celtic and Hispanic fighters shows a veritable who's-who of Hall of Fame warriors. From Light-Heavy on up the Celts would seem to have the advantage, but from Middle on down the Latinos start to make a stand. Indeed, perhaps even ascend to the superior position. Take a look:
MIDDLEWEIGHTS:
Fitzsimmons Monzon
Walker Valdez
NJ Dempsey Rodriguez
M. Gibbons
Conn
WELTERWEIGHTS:
NJ Dempsey Napoles
Britton Gavilan
Walker Duran
McLarnin Benitez
M. Gibbons De La Hoya
Trinidad
Cuevas
LIGHTWEIGHTS:
McAuliffe Duran
McLarnin Chavez
MacFarland Ortiz
Welsh Cervantes
Buchanan DeJesus
Locche
Laguna
Rosario
De La Hoya
