Freddie Roach has informed Boxingtalk.com that a bout between super middleweight king Joe Calzaghea and Contender Star Peter Manfredo Jr is in the works. According to Roach, Manfredo has already agreed to take the fight in England, but the Contender Group and Team Manfredo must come to a mutual understanding for the bout to take place. Makes you wonder whether the Contender was basically a Peter Manfredo show what with him being aloud back in after losing in the first round and now being the fighter with the opportunities despite having not won.

I say Calzaghe KO 4 at the most, seriously, awful fight. But big in ways cause look at Manfredos name in American but come on.

yeah, i know. i'd rather see Calzaghe against fine European boxers like Kessler and Beyer. That's the missing link from his title reign. He's beaten the American punchers convincingly (Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, Sheika), beaten the best of the Brits (Woodhall, Reid, Starie). It seems a bit of a toss off to just impress America for the sake of it.

Will it really impress the yanks though? I dont think many US fight fans are sold of Manfredo are a legit threat at 168, but it will carry name recognition in the many households who followed the Contender series.

Still, at his age and at this stage in his reign Clazaghe shud be cementing his legacy with premier league fights, not beating up a tough club fighter from Rhode Island.

Surely Calzaghe would rip Manfredo to pieces.

What would Manfredo have done to get his shot, surely he cant be highly ranked by the IBF or WBO.

sadly that seems to be the route. jones is out of the picture, thank god. i wonder if winky will be in later this year? i reckon winky can just about get by taylor, and that would seem to be the biggest fight vs an american. winky wants to get revenge for his musclebound friend.


this matchup would serve an interesting purpose as it could explore the potential of one of two places that are/can be lucrative areas to stage major fights - England (following Hatton-Tszyu & Calzaghe-Lacy) and Florida (where Lacy beat Reid and Tarver v Jones III drew a big crowd and major PPV #s).

If Kessler vs Joppy was bad this is very bad bad bad

Manfredo is leaps behind Calzaghe and has no right to be in the ring with Joe. The Pemberton fight might have cemented him as a legitimate contender, but it had already been proven many a time that Pemberton can be taken early and is already old so wasn't exactly formidable, just exciting.

Pemberton seemed to make his name (for me anyway) on the first Sheika fight, and Manfredo needs much better to get near Calzaghe.

IMO Pemberton is way better than Joppy and I wont even comment on the other ones that are in the race to face Kessler.

it wasnt that long ago that manfredo was boxing as a lightmiddle weight!

To what end?? Manfredo has huge name recognition in the US amongst hardcore fans, casual fans AND joe bloggs. And its an easy win for Calzaghe to boot.
