Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods?
Where's the streetwise Hercules to fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need.
I need a hero.
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night.
He's gotta be strong
and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight.
It looks like Bonnie's found her man!

mercman wrote:Just thought I would share this story with you guys and apparently it is totally true - I got it from a very sound source. A mate of mine, now in his forties, used to be a bit of a tearaway in his youth and a decent amateur light-heavy (although he is very much a heavyweight now). Nowadays he is a family man with his own haulage business - lives in a nice area, kids, dog, family saloon etc. You get the idea.
Anyway, the other day he was driving through town nice and steady when a young lout in an old banger pulled alongside his car and started ranting and raving through the window at him. The youth then pursued Mr Familyman for a mile or so at a close distance, swerving towards him and making all sorts of threats. My mate then pulled into B&Q carpark (where he was headed anyway) and as he got out of his car this aggressive youth raced towards him screaming and bawling and obviously intending to do some damage.
Mr Familyman just stood there cool as you like and, as the youth lunged at him, dropped his shoulder and let go with a big right cross - boom! Down Mr Nasty went - apparently with a horrified look on his face as he hit the tarmac. My mate then walked into B&Q to do his shopping. Cool as you like. Apparently an oldish couple were clapping as he walked off.
I know that some boxers have hurt people and got into trouble in similar circumstances but I just hate bullies like this young lout who go around terrorising people who they think are vulnerable. It happened to my mum and dad once - and they are in their seventies. Anyway I thought this was a bit of poetic justice and just thought some of you guys might appreciate this little story.
Nice one! I would have loved to have seen the 'horrified look on his face'... there seems to be an ever increasing amount of these louts about...

Saw something similar the other day on the Caledonian Rd
Group of kids hassling an old biddy with a cane, brave lads
She, being best part of 80, turns around and lamps the biggest one with her stick. Knocks him clean over and he starts blubbing like a lass. All his mates rip the piss out of him.
Very very sweet indeed. Not particularly one for violence, but I think he may consider twice before doing it again

Unfortunately gents, the longer people keep voting back in this wishy-washy Labour government, the longer it will be before occurances like this start to diminish. Lawlessness, and criminals-rights mean these people aren't bothered about their behaviour, and if anyone stands up to them, the innocent party risks repurcussions. This government is the worst ever, internally corrupt, couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery, and are degenerating & regressing this country with every day that goes by.

And there lies the difference. The majority of "yobs" are all-mouth-no-trousers and are relying on the bully aspect of winning their confrontation. As the old saying goes,
"really hard men don't need to go around shouting about it"
mercman wrote: I know that some boxers have hurt people....
But that is the chance we all take when we make a confrontation. You may be in with someone who you can beat 10 times out of 10, or you may run into an ex-karate champion, a bare-knuckle fighter, an off-duty copper, or someone with a knife or gun. "You takes your chances...." as they say.
Lovely story Mr Mercman, thanks for sharing it.
One up for the good guys!

You are insane mate, this government is more hard line that the previous tory government by far, do you realise how much new legislation has been brought in to counter stuff like Antisocial behaviour, do you know how many liberties enshrined in our constitution are being dissolved. If you think this government has been lax on crime then you are insane.
All this stuff about regression and deterioration is knee jerk bollocks, we are in no more danger now than we were 20 years ago. It's just that the media like to harp on and on about escalating violence. If it's so fornicating violent, how come I've lived in london for 35 years, and not once been mugged/attacked?
The media paints a picture of this country going to the dogs as if we live in some sort of wild west dodge city with bandits pillaging and looting freely. Nothing of the sort is true, and we have record prison populations right now, and jails fit to burst.
You cannot lock up every single person who commits a crime as there isn't enough jail space, you have to tackle the roots of crime if you want it to go away.
Where I live in South London, there are some of the most vast housing estates I've ever seen, and there are always crime waves around them. The reason is that the people who live in them are poor, socially immobile and with crap prospects on the whole. That's not wishy washy liberalism, it's just a fact of life that if you create vast ghettos where you shouldn't be surprised when you have a crime wave resulting from that.
If you think the tories are going to wave a magic wand and make crime go away, you're delusional, Jack Straw is the most hard liner in a long long time and it's not really done much to reduce crime.
We live in a safe society compared with the vast majority of the world, that doesn't mean we should be complacement, but it does mean people should have more perspective on how our society really is in relation to the rest of the world.

Err, because you're over 6ft and weigh more than 15 stone...?
Jokes aside, it's a good post and I'd agree with the general points. Though you do have to bear in mind James that the 'nothing's happened to me' argument is inherently flawed - case in point, the number of old-time smokers who used to play down the risks by pointing to their 70-year-old dad who was on 50-a-day yet still "going strong"...

Yes ok, fair point, I am about 6' 2 and 14 stone with a skinhead, so possibly not the obvious target for a muggin.

Goto Latin America, you have a huge number of people on the bread line (not the I can't afford the latest designer gear line) and they have far more dignity in their povety and try to work/graft to improve their lott in life. Here people are lazy, want everything given to them and not really that poor in the first place (and I've lived on enxt to nothing here but always been able to afford decent food etc).
In Latin American countries when the 'gangsters' rob people they'll try and rob foreigners or the rich, robbing your local shops/market stalls is a huge no no, here what do estate kids do - go robbing the little business man whos got a cornershop. Why?Because they don't give a toss about the next man and their irresponsible parents do
Violence/crime is higher than 20-30years ago. Gangster culture started been very fashionable 10-15years ago through Tupac/Biggie wanabees. Its so fashionable an untalented rapper like 50cent (Tupac and Biggie actually had skill) is manufactured into a star. When I was a kid we all wanted to be footballers now every kid wants to be a drug dealer and that is a true testiment to our times. Allot of it stems from the torry ideals of the individual coming first and never mind the poor so and so next man.

I agree that nobody here is poor, and there is a culture of instant self gratification for which we have Margaret Thatcher and her acolytes to blame, not the present government. The late 70's saw the destruction of traditional societies in favour of the self serving ideology of free market economics, successive governments merely followed and aped what she espoused.
the breakdown of the community has definetly resulted in less respect for Authority or the opinions of others in the community, people effectively live in their own bubble and few people live in a community with the same people for long periods of time any more.
what I object to is this notion that society is going to the dogs and how everything is so much worse than before, as if there were some recently golden age. It's a fallacy, and part of the reason things appear worse than they are is the media, and the fact that crime figures are more strenuously collected than previously.

I tend to side with James, though it is fascinating to see the way different cultures react to social conditions. When I went to Mumbai last year I saw heart-breaking levels of poverty, yet crime is nowhere near as prevalent (or certainly not violent crime).
The UK does appear to be unusual with regards to 'casual' violence, with the binge-drinking culture clearly playing a part in that.

Bear in mind as well, we live in a society of extremes. We have some people on the breadline and a lot of people doing very nicely indeed.
In a lot of Latin America, people live on poverty, but relatively they are doing ok as their neighbours are in the same boat.
Poverty is a state of mind. By Latin American standards I'm fornicating minted, but by London standards I am pretty piss poor. There's so much more on offer in the rich Western societies, and this creates envy in people who are in the scheme of things, not poor at all.

Yeah, well, I'd say violent crime has gone up enormously in the past 10 years..... shootings, stabbings, you name it, its all common place now... where I live in Richmond/Twickenham is thought by some to be quite a posh/well to do area but come night time now there are quite a few places that you don't go after dark and I know several people that have been attacked/mugged in the town centres... and this sort of thing didn't occur 10 years ago here... I've lived in this place all my life and have seen it change, and not for the better unfortunately.
While todays government maybe hot on spying on us and trying to stop us driving our cars it is also soft on crime in the fact that many sentances for violent crimes have been cut, life for a murderer now often means 9-to-12 years... and young hooligans are too often pandered to and taken on vacations etc when really they want locking up in a bare cold cell for a few years to wake their ideas up... may not be pc but neither is mugging old ladies....

Actually, the UK has far less extremities than some other countries/cultures. In Mumbai, the concept of suburbs or gated communities doesn't really exist yet (it's starting to emerge), so the super-rich literally live next-door to impoverished slums - the contrasts are actually far more striking than in the UK.
The same applies here in Dubai, with hugely wealthy Arabs and expats living in close proximity to labour camps and run-down housing.
Cultural conditioning is a broad, somewhat lazy term to bandy around, but it's clear that certain cultures or sub-cultures have a mindset whereby they have been conditioned to 'accept' their 'natural' place in society and not to question it - the caste system in India being the most obvious example.
In the West, by contrast, this is far from the case (quite rightly as far as I'm concerned as I'm a great believer in meritocracy).

The biggest problem today is that we live in a 'I want it culture' and there are many that know the only way that they are going to get it is to take it off someone else... add that to a loss of moral conscience, fear of God etc and you have a recipe for the sort of chaos that is our modern society...
