Povetkin was a talented medal winning amateur and the Germans have given him a couple of feeling out fights before putting in with Richard Bango who he dispatched impressively and now Friday Ahunanya at just 6-0! Was surprised to read a negative reaction to Povetkin in Boxing News recently, can't remember the exact quote but it think they were leading along the lines of him being a "disappointment" but correct me if i'm wrong on that one.

There seems to be a decent flow of "Russian" talent around the World Heavyweight scene of late and i think this guy might be world class, maybe fighting for a title in his 12th fight if he remains on schedule 8) What do we think?

They obviously have a lot of faith in the kid, which is good to see. A fight between him and Boytsov could be pretty big a few years down the line.

Reminds me of another young fighter I noticed recently who is taking on some very credible opponents despite his novice status:

as weak as the division is now, i wont be surprised if povetkin wins a title after 15-20 fights!!

Weren't SN publicising the signing of this exciting heavy but they showed their hand too early and his signature went elsewhere.

As I remember it he was scheduled to debut on the abismal Hatton-Tyszu undercard?

With the recent Audley Harrison carnival some have lost faith in what a Olympic medal means.

Povetkin is not only a Olympic Champion, but a World Champion, & a European Champion, A Russian Champion and at the end of all that he is the right side of 30 years old, Povetkins Olympic Gold was not a one off moment, he has always been a good boxer!

Povetkin is a World Class Amateur & i am willing to put everything i have on him winning a World title if not all of them!

The US might not want to rate him very high, because after all he is European & they are in real big trouble with there future in the heavyweight scene

Sorry to hijack, Steve, but I'd like to give a shout out to my man Derek Bryant, who won on Friday night. Bryant is one of the seven active Heavyweights in the whole world I'd pay to watch.

Apparently he threw a superman left hand, ko'ing Sykes while landing on his own face. The punch knocked out Sykes and sent him falling through the ropes, where he then began to wander among the audience before being guided into the ring, still wandering aimlessly. I don't think any medical staff bothered with him at all during the whole post-fight. And yet some Americans have the gall to spew their stereotypes of other less wealthy countries, without having seen their setups. If I were a manager I'd let my fighter fight in Borneo before he'd step a foot in Georgia.

Flip me that sounds a bit scary Wasn't Derek Bryant a bit of a prospect at one point? I have only seen him once back fighting Malcolm Tann he gave it his all that night.

As for Povetkin he won over 6 against Ahunanya.

Not saying Povetkin isnt a good fighter, he is, but if he had done a 10 rounder it would have been much more meaningful...

What is the point of taking on a decent and durable oponnent in a 6 rounder?

I'm also surprised Ahunanya agreed to fight a 6 rounder...

Friday 'The 13th' is a highly regarded sparring partner, perhaps he has given up on looking to become a contender and has fallen in sparring partner 'mode'.

I would like to see the fight - did anyone see it?

tt, thats the point we are making... it was a excellent choice of opponent, but would have been a lot more impressive if it was over the longer distance

Legit win for Povetkin. Friday came to fight, had his moments, but overall he was outclassed by Povetkin, who dug really hard to the body. Friday was starting to wear down from the bodyshots. In an eight rounder he would have taken a knee, Povetkin would have stopped him in a ten rounder. Povetkin didn´t seem to have any problems stamina-wise, but I wish he was 10 pounds heavier and his defense needs work. Offensively he´s almost there.

Watched the first three rounds of this one before unfortunately nodding off.

Povetkin reminds me, well looks wise anyway of a six foot five Ricky Hatton but without the body assault or snap.

Moves his head well decent work rate for a big man. Hopefully he will learn to punch from the hip rather than the arm.

Very impressed with his opponents to date and no nonsense attitude, the future of the heavyweights looks likely to reamain in Eastern Europe for a long time to come with Sultan Ibragimov, Ruslan Chagaev, Dennis Boystov and Povetkin as my tips to handover from the current ex Soviet champions.

Not much in the States to speak of only Chazz Witherspoon and Kevin Johnson are worthy of a small mention.

I don't think Ibragimov will amount to much if I am honest, he is far to raw.

Samuel Peter can come again, with some modification.

I think Povetkin and Dimentrenko are the most likely to turn from prospect to champion - I wouldn't write off Platov with some modification, he has good frame and good speed.

Chazz Witherspoon looks good so far.

I know he got rediculed as an over hyped white guy, but I'm starting to think that had Joe Mesi not sustained these injuries that should mean suspension - then he really could have gone on and become a champion.

Bryant is now one of my favs, seeing as i won a nice few pounds on him last week, before the Sykes fight he hadn't been in the greatest of form, but i knew he was aggressive and i thought that Sykes couldn't hold a shot.

I've watched the fight yesterday, and Bryant seemed to believe in himself from the start, he's not that quick but had got himself into good shape and once he had Sykes going he never let him off the hook. Topman :)

Have to say that the commission there must be shite, Sykes was out of it, and only the fact that some people got him back to his corner stopped him from wandering around the site, he wasn't looked at once by any medical person.

I've since saw the fight myself and if you look close you can see the judge having a laugh with Bryant after one of the earlier knockdowns. He was a little thin bald guy with a grey (I think) Fred Perry on. Easily distinguishable from the other judges with their red noses and curly green wigs.

How did Povetkin look last night? I was a little bit disappointed by the opponent to be honest. Povetkin's 1st 8-rder, and they get an opponent, who has been in with a few names, but didn't look like he'd last out the 8 rounds. Point in that? Anyway, just nit-picking there

His offense looked very good, but he didnt bother much with defense, probably because Castillo couldnt hurt him.
