I have seen the result of this fight listed as a no contest. It was originally called a knockout for Molinares but it was after the bell. The Boxrec entry for Tomas Molinares says he only fought 3 times and after the Starling fight he went insane. Does anyone know anything about this fight or Tomas Molinares?

Molinares was first awarded the win by ko but then 5 days later the NJ commission declared the fight a no decision...then WBa still made Molinares the champion because tye said the punch in question started before the bell rang.

I'm not sure what happened to Molinares after that

Was it very controversial or is it widely held that it was a blatant foul?

the bell rang and a split second afterwards, molinares let go with a right that landed right on the chin. Starling went down and rolled over as the ref counted him out. the punch was clearly after the bell. Molinares was giving starling a pretty good fight up until then. the fight was televised by HBO as part of a double header.

The funny pare of this fight was the interview afterwards. Starling did NOT remember anything. It became obvious in the interview when Larry asked him about the Ko blow. Starling said " I didnt get knocked out, I didnt get knocked DOWN!!!" He really though the referee had stopped the fight for some unkown reason while he was on his stool in between rounds, when in fact he was on the stool after the fight being revived. Funy funny interview.
