Alex Arthur V Sergei Gulyakevich

So it's yet another European title tussle tonight and i think it could turn out to be an interesting battle between Alex Arthur and unbeaten Sergei Gulyakevich. Having seen the Belarus fighter a couple of times he seems a more than capable operator who's most notable win so far was a two round stoppage win over Tontcho Tontchev in Monaco last year. He was also featured on the most recent Eurosport bill from Monaco stopping overmatched Frederic Bonifai in a round. Other than that he has been dieting mostly on tough Russians including Nikolai Emereev who he beat over 10. Against Tontchev he tucked up tight and landed some solid hooks and dropped the Bulgarian before referee Talon saved Tontchev from a barrage on the ropes.
Before his win over Bonifai he went 10 with a 3-2 Belarussian which doesn't look particularly impressive and now i'm going to totally contradict myself and say Gulyakevich could completely fold as he has not faced anyone really of Arthur's ability yet (Tontchev could arguably have a had a few miles on the clock)
But these Russians (sic) are made of tough stuff as Boris Sinitsin showed so i think Gulyakevich will pose a few problems for Arthur but i still expect the Scot to prevail. And on that note i would just like to commend Arthur as i feel he is a guy who isn't afraid of a challenge and his CV speaks for itself, i think it is pretty impressive thus far up to European level

Any thoughts on tonight's fight?

Full credit to Arthur for taking on this guy, Alex is 3rd by the IBF and 4th by the WBO so he's risking the job lot. For a Sports Network promotion it's great to see a proper title on the line, and a legit opponent in the other corner. I'm not convinced that Arthur has undergone a massive transformation since the loss to Gomez, although he's regrouped impressively. If this guy can draw him into a fight, it looks like he's got the power to knock Arthur out. Let's hope it's a good one !

At 5/2 Gulyakevich is a good bet in my opinion.

If this guy can punch like it seems he can then Alex could be in trouble...

Two guys who can punch and throw plenty of shots , possible fight of the year contender ?

Should be a good one this - haven't seen Gul in action, but anyone who knocks out Tontchev is going to be dangerous and coming to win.

This could be a great fight. Arthur is a fine boxer but Gulyakevich has a good record so far. I think Alex will win but there could be an upset.

Arthur has been easier to hit of late and against a tall rangy sharpshooter like Guylakevitch, it could be disastrous.
I've seen a lot of both men.
Gulyakevitch inside 4 or,
Arthur in 10.

I wasn't very confident with Manuel from Fawlty Towers refing, thankfully it was stopped fairly soon... looked to be losing control of it.
Again incompetant judging, how did 2 judges (at least) think Arthur won or at least shared 2 of the first 3 rounds. Can make a case for Round one going to Arthur - but his opponent definately won rounds 2 and 3.
I was about to make a post saying that had the ref stopped it when Gulyakevitch was cut (during the 6th) then Arthur has lost, but not according to the Judges.... and that would have been crazy.
Thankfully, the ref did dock the points and complete the round and there was no controvesy, but it was a close shave.

after 3 rds i thought it was looking a little grim for arthur. fortunately he started upping things in rd 4 and turned things around.
that headbutt in rd 6 from the ruski was way out of line.

pleased to see the ref punish it and take 2 pts off.
awkward guy to look good against and a win is all that mattered. bring on medina.

I thought the ref was very good. Good fight too, just a shame about the ending. I bet those naughties wiv the 'eads wouldn't have happened if Micky Vann was in there, though.

If fighting a scotsman never choose the head as the weapon of choice because you will lose.
Seriously i was really getting into this fight untill the headbutt's shame it had to end like that, was arthur's butt accidental or revenge cause he made
a fornicating mess of the bid belarussian.

I thought the butt was accidental, Arthur landed a big right and both men swivelled inside and clashed heads, Gulyakevich was a bit dirty especially that blatant headbutt! He moved back and then rammed home a sweet nut. Arthur then threw his head back in a bit of a delayed reaction but not condoning that headbutt it was cynical, some refs may have chucked him there and then but i thought Barrevocchio did a good job and managed to keep control well enough.
Shame about the ending as the fight was warming up well, the Belarussian was arguably starting to feel it by the seventh but he had landed plenty of scything hooks early to make it more than interesting. His reputation as a puncher was maybe a touch overplayed given the level of some of his opposition but he certainly dug hard enough and regularly enough to make this more than interesting as long as it lasted.
And a short moan on ITV, generally the commentary was not bad at all but ITV always seems geared towards the casual fan while SKY's approach seems to cater for the Boxing enthusiast. This aside i can;t stand that prick Jim Rosenthal, he is a smug eejit with that sickly grin of his makes me queezy. When he said "It's Alex Arthur versus Sergi Guli-ka-vic" i wanted to twat him. And finally....why were Rawling and McKenzie obsessed with all this Challenger and Champion nonsense. Time after bloody time "The champion landed a good jab", "The challenger responds"...flip me just call them Morris and Munroe for goodness sakes

I've worked out now what I don't like about the Rawling/McKenzie team... They talk too much about one moment in the round and seemed to forget other moments.
There were many times during the mid rounds of the Munroe vs Morris fight when Morris would start the round brightly... and either John and Duke would say - something like "A good start to the round by Morris, he seems to be over that early storm now, Munroe is looking tired, you'd would expect to see the Champion come on strong - as he has done 12 rounds before and is fit as a fiddle.... I was speaking to his trainer and he called him one of the fittest pro's in UK boxing"..
Words to that effect, then Duke would reiterate.
By that time - it was Munroe who had put alot of work in for more than a minute - yet if Morris won the last 30 they would go back to him and say "clear round for Morris".
They seem to ignore the mid part of everyround, if a bright start has been made by a fighter.

Such gruesomeness.
I agree with the 68 - 63 scoring.
Sergei paid for making a Scotsman angry.

McKenzie went on one round about how Munroe had done well and landed stronger, cleaner shots and at the end Rawling said he thought it was a round to Morris... "I have to agree with you John", come on Duke you just spent the last minute saying the opposite!! Not exactly Teddy Atlas is he

Can't remember how I scored that but I didn't give even rounds like Mc Kenzie was giving.
Thought it was 7 rounds to 5 anyway.

I thought the production and commenataing was woeful , how the hell did McKenzie have the 9th even it was one of Morris' biggest rounds .
champion , challenger , champion , challenger , champion.............they have names you fornicating idiots .

You'd think he would have used some of the tricks he learned in the territorial army on Arthur or stitched his own cut up ala Rambo but no.

Arthur looked pretty poor.... Rawlings and Mckenzies commentary seems to be getting worse... Rawlings has the annoying habit of describing things as if he is still a radio commentator... the two of them were rabbiting on so much I was find it hard to concerntrate on the boxing!!!....
