11th round of Jezzamundo's dream heavyweight tournament
Posted: 01 May 2006, 03:37
by jezzamundo
Results from the 10th round are:
Ali UD12 Frazier
Louis UD12 Marciano
Holmes UD12 Foreman
Lewis KO9 Tyson
So the points table reads:
1. Ali 905 points (10-0-0, 2 ko)
2. Louis 895 points (9-1-0, 6 ko)
3. Holmes 745 points (7-2-0, 3 ko)
4. Foreman 560 points (5-4-1, 5 ko)
5. Lewis 380 points (4-6-0, 2 ko)
6. Marciano 255 points (1-8-1, 1 ko)
7. Frazier 150 points (1-9-0, 0 ko)
8. Tyson 110 points (1-9-0, 1 ko)
The next round of fights are:
Ali vs Maricano (Ali won first fight UD12)
Louis vs Holmes (Louis won first fight KO10)
Foreman vs Lewis (Foreman won first fight KO5)
Frazier vs Tyson (Tyson won first fight TKO5)
Remember, this is a premier league style event and not a knockout competition. Once all fighters have fought each other twice the tournament is over and the fighter with the most points is the ultimate champion! Fights are 12 rounds, not 15, and fighters use 10 ounce gloves (not that I think that would make a real difference to any of the fights). For those who didn't read the first topic, these are 7 of my top 8 all-time heavies, I rate Tyson 12th from memory, but I found him just too interesting a fighter to leave out. The points system is as such:
KO win = 100 points
TKO win = 100 points
UD win = 90 points
MD win = 75 points
SD win = 60 points
Draw = 50 points
SD loss = 40 points
MD loss = 25 points
UD loss = 10 points
TKO loss = 0 points
KO loss = 0 points

Ali vs Maricano -- Ali KO5
Louis vs Holmes -- really tough pick. Louis MD 12
Foreman vs Lewis -- Lewis UD12. First time I change the result from the frist fight- I assume Lewis learns to avoid Foreman early on and comes out strong in the second half
Frazier vs Tyson -- Tyson KO4. Frazier wasn't famous for improving in refights.

If Tyson would have met Frazier in real life Frazier would have only one ear today....

Ali TKO11 Marciano (Ali dominates and the ref stops the fight due to cuts)
Holmes MD12 Louis
Lewis UD12 Foreman (A cautious Lewis wins the rematch)
Frazier KO10 Tyson (Fantastic fight, Tyson starts better but Joe hangs on to knock him out late, evening the score)

Muhammad Ali TKO 12 Rocky Marciano, Ali Boxes circles around a brave but overmatched Marciano. ref stops it in the 12th because rock is taking to much punishment
Larry Holmes SD Joe Louis, a real classic, all three judges scorecards are 115-113, only larry gets two.
George Foreman KO7 Lennox Lewis, Lennox appears to be cruising untill george opens a can on him in the 7th
Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier-DRAW, very hard one to call so i say its a draw

im not, but saying ali kayoes marciano in 5 is literally ridiculous.
first of all, ali is not a power puncher and would never put rocky down for the 10 count.
2nd, rocky had a great chin and a lot of heart, knocking out rocky is damm hard to do and ali certainly wouldnt be able to do it.
lastly,
joe frazier very similiar to marciano was never floored in 3 meetings with ali and fought ali life and death yet suddenly ali will put marciano down for a 10 countin 5 rounds? marciano has a better chin than frazier too
mildenberger lasted 12 rounds
terell lasted 15 rounds
chuvalo lasted 15 rounds
GLASS JAW very hurt back floyd patterson lasted 12 rounds, and even ali couldnt put him down for a 10 count
185lb henry cooper was never floored by ali in two meetings
180lb doug jones lasted the distance with ali
oscar bonavena lasted 15 rounds
vunerable chin ken norton was not floored in 39 rounds with ali
mac foster, rudi lubbers, buster mathis, etc all these guys lasted the distance with muhammad ali
yet ali is going to put down for the 10 count one of the most durable abd one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time in just 5 rounds? a man who we have never seen badly hurt on film? all these less fighters can survive vs ali, but marciano can't? glass jaw patterson can take alis best shots and still not be put down for a count of 10, but the far more durable marciano would be? joe frazier can beat muhammad ali, but ali knocks marciano out in 5?

Well, this is a game and it's the return fight and in the first fight I had Ali UD 12. To be different, this time I assumed the dancing Ali of the 1960s (not the stationary one of the 1970s) toys with and cuts Marciano in various places for 5 rounds and a semi-blind Rocky doesn't come out for the 6th.
Besides, Rocky never fought someone who was even remotely of prime Ali's quality; and he was decked by lesser fighters who weren't able to follow up in the same way Ali would have been able to. So how do we know what the exact outcome would have been.

Thanks for the PM jezz
Ali WMD 12 Marciano (Rocky tries harder but 12 rounds is not good for him)
Louis WSD 12 Holmes (close again, Louis hurts Holmes alte on to just nick a decision)
Lewis KO 10 Foreman (Lewis is more cautious and George gets caught late)
Frazier KO 11 Tyson (Joe hangs on in, wins the inside battle and gets his revenge)

did ali in the 1960s ever fight someone who was remotley close to the style of a prime rocky marciano?
ali vs marciano rematch? wow um
first time ali clear 15 unanimous marciano
2nd time ali close split 15 marciano

Ali vs Maricano (Ali won first fight UD12)
The second Ali Frazier fight is the key to this, Ali wins as long as he is serious however it won't be that entertaining as Ali got about all the pain he wanted from Marciano the first time around. He takes the Rock serious and just pulls a mastercrafted precision clinic. Stays out of trouble (and pain) and Ali wins UD. It has it's moments because Rocky has stamina and determination, but doesnt have the tools to overcome his superiorly gifted opponent.
Louis vs Holmes (Louis won first fight KO10)
I go back and forth and I never think the same thing two days in a row on this theoretical. I can't even remember who I gave the first one to I imagine it was Louis. But today I'm going with Holmes, he fights a no nonsense heads up tactical fight and calls on everthing he's got to pull out a close split decision that is full of controversy and half the public thinks should have gone the other way. But Louis has class and just tells him to get back into shape cuz Larry won't win the rubber match. Larry quietly agrees with Joe's assessment.
Foreman vs Lewis (Foreman won first fight KO5)
Prime Foreman puts Lewis out first time everytime. A repeat KO round 5. I consider a prime Foreman a an amalgam of his first and second career. The power and reflexes of the first outing and the wisdom of the second. Sadly no such fighter ever really existed.
Frazier vs Tyson (Tyson won first fight TKO5)
Everyone should think about this one.....I know I"m the only only one giving Frazier both of these but I can not for the life of me see how Tyson matches Frazier for mental toughness. Joe will be a harder target this time than the first time and he is just made of tougher stuff. You can not template the Foreman aspects into this fight. Tyson is not Foreman and Joe would be intimidator not Mike. Mike does not like to be in a real fight and Frazier knows what a fight is all about. Frazier TKO round 7.

Ali vs Maricano. Marciano KO round 9.
(Ali tires, Marciano catches him with the almighty Suzy Q, lights out!!!)
Louis vs Holmes. Louis KO round 7.
The greatest combination puncher punishes the stiff jab of Holmes.
Foreman vs Lewis. Foreman KO round 6.
Lewis doesn't know what hit him, again.
Frazier vs Tyson. Frazier KO round 11.
If James Buster Douglas can knock down Ttson, so can "Smokin Joe".

louis KO 7 holmes
I cant believe people are picking holmes in the rematch.
when did holmes ever prove he could win a big rematch? in fact in close figths, holmes never gave rematches too norton, spoon, williams, etc.
joe louis made a career out of dominating in rematches. dont expect him to stop vs larry. joe louis has a big advantage vs holmes in the rematch.

BB I gave my excuses, with those two it's just a tough call every time someone throws this theoretical out there. I mean what a great fight it would be. It might be the one fight I would like to see more than any other because I truly can't come up with a definitive outcome.
BB would you call Lous over Holmes 3 for 3? Just curious.
Id have Frazier Tyson as the undercard. Just to settle that hash. I think Frazier is way under rated in that potential fight.

When did the 60s Ali tire - EVER?
Frazier vs Tyson. Frazier KO round 11.
If James Buster Douglas can knock down Ttson, so can "Smokin Joe".
Tyson came out of shape and unfocused into the Douglas fight. This is like "if Brian Nielsen can outpoint Larry Holmes, so can X".
