Glenn McCrory - In Fight In Newcastle?

Posted: 02 May 2006, 03:52
by TerribleTerry
Heard a vague mention of this on Talk Sport this morning.

Apparently the big feller was out on a night out in Newcastle, when he saw a doorman taking a shoeing. McCrory tried to help him out and was set upon by up to 11 assailants (possibly with bats??)

I may well have got this wrong as I was driving when I heard the brief story - can anyone confirm this and are the details mentioned above correct?

A few of my mates met Glenn and went on the pi55 with him in Vegas after the Lewis-Holyfied II fight; they said he was a cracking bloke and no sort of bully.

This type of thing makes me vomit. What a set of cowards.

Whoever is apprehended - if found guilty - for these type of crimes need unusual punishment.

Did anyone read the newpaper report about that attack in Tooting the other week. Two asian men in their mid 30's who went to try and defuse a fight between two teenage gangs, dragged out of their cars and hacked to death with machetes by 30 people?

What makes anyone want to do that? How can you butcher someone like that?

Although I don't believe the whole country is going to pot, there is definetly a growing gang culture which is very worrying. Someone has to find what is causing this and do something about it. I suspect that it's something to do with the erosion of community (thanks for that thatch!), and gangs are replacing the local bonds which people identified with 30-40 years ago and giving the youth element somewhere to fit in.

A huge amount of this problem stems, of course, from abuse of alcohol.

I have just come back from Valencia and there, while the kids are out having a good time and drinking until the early hours there is not a sign of of loutishness and laryness. In part I think the culture means they handle their drink better and don't just head off to get arsholed. In part, I think the Catholic culture has ingrained certain levels of behaviour and in part because, I think if they did get abusive, the older men would beat the living crap out of them without fear of reprisal

I am not saying that Spain does not have its problems but the difference between Spain and coming home on a train from Gatwick which was full of louts screaming, drinking cheap beer and vomitting was palpable

I can't open the link so can't comment on the story. But, my suggestion would be to put each of the men individually in a room with GMc to let him have the discussion with them one to one. would not, I hazzard, be too long until these brave little chaps piss their pants and screem for mummy

Glenn's quote made me laugh 'my head looks like a melon.'

:TU:

He's obviously not too badly hurt if he can laugh about it.

FORMER world boxing champion Glenn McCrory was recovering yesterday after being beaten to a pulp by 11 thugs in a vicious pub brawl.

The 6ft 4in, 14-stone ex-cruiserweight — who sparred with Mike Tyson and fought Lennox Lewis — was having a meal with friends when a doorman asked the yobs to leave.

A friend of Glenn’s went to see what was going on and was attacked as the louts started to lay into the bouncer.

Glenn immediately went to help his mate — but as he held one yob down he was attacked with beer bottles and a metal bar sign by other members of the gang.

The 41-year-old, who is now a Sky Sports boxing pundit, said his head ended up “like a melon” after the attack near his home in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Glenn was taken to hospital for scans after suffering massive bruising to the side of his head, a black eye and a two-and- a-half-inch gash to his face. He was allowed home after six hours of treatment.

Glenn, who won the IBF world crown in 1989, said: “It was pretty shocking. They could have seriously injured somebody — or even killed them.

“There were about 11 people who were attacking the doorman and my friend had gone to try to do something.

“Then I realised he was also getting beaten up. I ran out of the door to help him.

“But I was kicked in the head and I was attacked with a bar sign and with bottles.

“This gang of lads were on the rampage. They were an absolute bunch of idiots.

“I pushed one of them down and when I tried to keep him down there were three others kicking me in the head.”

Glenn added: “What they were trying to do was fill the bouncer in. Unfortunately for us we got in the way.”

A Northumbria police spokesman said investigations were continuing into the violence.

The chances of getting away with this sort of thing - with so much cctv footage available - are now pretty slim. Hopefully these scum will be arrested and the extra publicity generated by Glenn Mccrory's involvement will add an extra third to their sentences.

The kind of cowards who will go eleven on one need sorting out.

Any pussy who goes 11 on 1 with weapons should not be out on the street but then again any main street in the UK on a firday or saturday night is over run with them. Thug/yob/chav culture has taken over the UK.

Poor old Glen.

Who wants a bet that some of these scumbags are probably already on bail for other offences... chances are even if they are caught they'll get very little time and prob community service... truth is these days if you hurt people you get very little done to you whereas if you don't pay your parking tickets you're looking at a heavier sentance than if you'd run someone over.... Blairs Britain...

Too true! Last week a 66 year old widow was threatened (with a lump of wood) by a gang of yobs who earlier had beaten up a neighbour. I think she was on her own property at the time, and is alleged to have given one of them a clip on the ear. Along come the police and guess what...she's arrested for assault!

Blair's Britain is divided into those who know how to work the system and who (literally at times) get away with murder, and those who naively think that the law is for their own protection and that as long as you're innocent you're OK. Left wing police, shyster lawyers and so called "Human Rights Law" have turned a once great country into a prison for all except the criminals.

My mate lives right near there, we had to be escorted past the scene by the filth on foot at about 3am. They had dragged them out of a transit van, smashed it up and stabbed them to death. The van was in the road smashed to shit.

I think the Middle East is brutal in its ways, but sometimes a little of there punishment could be used in this country on our thugs!

People would think twice before acting the way they do if the punishment was anything like what they do in other parts of the World.
A £60 fine or a short Prison sentence is no deterent to the modern age youth!

Oh god here we go, the 'bring back the birch' brigade on rampage is on the rise again.

You cannot base jurisprudence on anecdotal one off cases. Tony Blair is not responsible for country wide social trends personally, not does he directly make the laws. Sentencing guidelines are laid down by the Home Secretary and passed on to the judiciary, who in turn hand out sentences.

Britain's prison population is at it's highest rate ever, yet violent crime is on the increase, which just goes to prove that bunging people in jail doesn't eradicate the problem.

But you seem to think that Thatcher is somehow responsible (ref your earlier post remarking "Thanks Thatch". So if you can't blame Blair then how can you blame Thatcher?

Because unlike Tony Blair, Thatcher made a deliberate policy to go out of her way to break up traditional communities to 'increase flexibility in the marketplace' hence Norman Tebbit's famous 'on yer bike' statement. She tore the heart out of traditional communities all over Britain, plunging them into a poverty from which many are only yet recovering from, and some never have. She famously made the statement that 'there is no society' and introduced the cult of the individual which made America what it was to this country.

Whereas Tony Blair is merely responding to trends set in motion many years ago, Margaret Thatcher was the architect, or at least harbinger of them.

Sure' let's ape the laws of a country where Women are in some cases beaten to death for revealing their ankles! Let's go back to the middle ages because that is what you're talking about.

Wow what a considered response, obviously the mark of someone with an amazing knowledge of politics. You're probably the sort who thinks Margaret thatcher was the best prime minister we ever had, despite the fact she made an absolute mess of this country and ruined the lives of millions, all in the name of pushing through her ideas on the free market economy.

Is it any wonder that the more this country apes America's economic model, the more we seem to get their problems with violence and gang culture.

You don't solve any kind of social problem with knee jerk reactions, despite building more and more prisons, giving people lethal injections etc, for an affluent nation, America is still an incredibly violent society. Make of that what you will.

And why is it on the rampage, Jimbo? Because these cases are no longer 'anecdotal one off cases'. They are common and prevalent - several every single week.

Bunging people in the prison system we have now might not work. That indicates the prison system itself should be changed, as well as other wider social considerations.

What would have happened had a bunch of kids had a go at an old girl 50 years ago? The parents would have kicked the shit out of them, or some other responsible adults done the decent thing.

Unfortunately - partly because of your aforementioned erosion of community - but also by the indulgence of the welfare state, and perhaps lack of opportunities for some leading to boredom, etc - the concept of shame doesn't exist anymore and neither for some people does moral decency. These people aren't immoral, they are simply feral, amoral rats.

Re the 11 on 1 scenario - I was out with a few lads a couple of Christmases back. These two silly olds pisspots were working their ticket with two of my mates who are more than capable of looking after themselves. They just wouldn't leave it alone and it kicked off. My two mates had basically dealt with it but the first reaction of almost all the other lads I was with was to give the other blokes (now on the floor) a needless shoeing. Idiots, and I told them it was unnecessary. Wannabe hard men.

I'd bung em in the thames, and let them swim for their lives. Jailing them just wasters taxpayers maoney, as does the Government who are a disgrace.

I do feel personally that the sense of community being eroded is a big factor. People don't give a toss what their neighbours think of them any more, as they have little contact with those in their immediate vicinity, and people come and go so much in big cities that it's not an issue.

I can remember having a distinct fear of my elders when I was a teenager, whereas now if you give a 15 year old a telling off, you may well have to be ready to fight him, as he is likely to tell you to 'fakk off.'

The prison system is a massive failure, because so many people reoffend, and it's the causes that lead to crime which we have to identify to make things better.

We definetly live in a society now where many people expect a certain standard of living without any graft, wheras our parents generation were of the 'nowt for nowt' school of thought.

I am glad we have a welfare system in place, because if we didn't thing's would be a hell of a lot worse in this country, and there would be a lot more crime.

As you say, the mob mentality is there just below the surface and easily found, and not just amongst gangs of 'chavs' or whatever we want them these days.

I don't know what the answer to all this is, but my point was that knee-jerk reactions like 'bring back flogging' or 'bring back capital punishment' are quite obviously not going to solve the problem.

One of the problems with crime, is that nobody ever thinks they will be caught, so the deterrent isn't effective, and many crimes are opportunistic in nature, especially violent crimes. It may be that things are going to get worse before they get better, but serious effort has to be put into finding out why society has a problem with violence, whilst other forms of crime appear to be going down. Prison certainly doesn't seem to work, as people often come out institutionalised and unable to cope with life on the outside, and we cannot bang up everyone done for burglary for the rest of their lives.

Whatchagonnado?
