I am sure that all boxing fans will be delighted to read the following article from the May edition of Merseyside Former Boxers. It took a while but thanks to a great bit of team work we did it

We’ve won the Lottery ;—

Our members will be well aware that our association, coupled with our friends within the Wirral Ex Boxers Association ,has over the past few months made application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is our intention to create a permanent archive of boxing history on Merseyside, which will he presented to the Archive Section within Liverpool Central Library, and any other permanent structures which will ensure that this regions rich history of the ring will be preserved forever.

We ,within our associations, have long realised that some of boxing’s best known personalities, such as Ernie Roderick, Stan Rowan, Nel Tarleton, Jimmy Molloy, Dom Volante, the list seems endless...have all passed on, with no permanent visible memory, other than those listed in boxing record books, and various newspaper reports. We felt that there was a great need to provide a more personal record whilst the opportunity to interview some of the ring personalities still living is still available, and for that reason, it is our intention to interview as many past and present ring personalities from all corner’s of the sport, and video those interviews, so that a permanent and more personal memory will be forever on record. We also hope to put on static exhibitions in schools, and public places, with former ring personalities in attendance to talk with those present, and promote the sport to all interested parties.

It is therefore, with great pleasure that I can announce that we have been awarded the magnificent sum of £46,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable us to commence our project. I feel that this award reflects great credit upon both the Merseyside and Wirral Former Boxers Associat.ions, and it shows that the people with the ultimate responsibility for making the decision whether or not to award this money, also feel that our aims and intentions are both sincere and worthwhile.

Congratulations, Rob. That is fantastic news.

Best of luck on all the research and manpower it will take to unearth good information on those forgotten fighters.

cheers
