I just read a piece in today's Times about 'Boro, and how important the club has become in what is still a deprived area of the country.

You forget sometimes living in more affluent areas just how much a football club can mean to someone in a smaller town with less prospects and things to look forward to of a day. I hope they can take the Trophy tonight, whilst it may play second fiddle to the Champions League these days, it will still be some achievement, and as pointed out in the article, McClaren will become the first English (as opposed to Scottish I guess) manager to have European Cup success since Howard Kendall in 1987.

Thought this was going to be about big cars lol and about reducing petrol tax to US levels (who are complaining because they have to pay 50% of what we pay)

I think Liverpool had the same thing during the 80's particularly, with both top flight local teams having the most successful periods in their long histories.

Ah, the good old days. When I didn't lose every Everton/liverpool arguement, and I dared to leave the house to watch the Derby.

Indeed, when people go on about how shite our attendances are, they lose sight of the fact that it isn't a very big town, lots of people from the region have to move away to make a few bob (and are therefore exiled fans, like me) and many of those still there aren't very wealthy.

It's not the best place in England to live and this season has given the town a big, much needed lift.

I actually don't fancy us tonight on form...Sevilla are the best side we'll have played by some way. Just hope we acquit ourselves well.

I'd like to see Boro' win only because Steve Gibson deserves all the success in the world for the money he has put into the club.

I'm a bit of a believer that Cup destiny is sealed by some spooky moments some way before the final.

Liverpool last year, Man Utd in 1999, Man Utd in 1991 - Montepellier had it in the bag then Hughes got a player sent off with a brilliant dive, Denmark 1992.

Just think there is something in the water that means the cup is destined for Boro.

Well, it's not the only reason I'd like to see them win, but I can't argue with that. The bloke seems top notch.

Oh come on Ian, you'd love it . Mind you, as a Liverpool fan, I can agree that being 3 down at halftime in a European final is not a nice thing. Coming back to win though..... phew.

I've responded to you on another thread, with respect.

I won't forget the thumbs up you have given to a 4-0 Boro hammering. Very classy.

In fairness Ian, I think it was more an ironic thumbs up at McClaren for England.

I have to say that those tactics were a little worrying. 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go, going shit or bust in the final seemed a little drastic, 4 men forward, and no cover at the back at all.

Having said that.

Viduka was extremely unlucky not to have been given a penalty, especially as the guy nutted him in the back of the head. Had he been a little less dramatic in going to ground, then funnily enough he may got it.

Seville were absolute quality, the gulf in class was pretty clear when they were on the ball, Boro were made to look like donkeys by comparison. Seville were a class act, and I think Boro were largely played off the park except for a 10 minute spell in the 2nd half. The penalty would have changed the complection of the game completely, the 2nd goal from Seville just tore the arse out of it.

The question is, who is to blame for that? Should McClaren have made better uses of resources available in buying his squad, or is it that the kind of team he had to pick. After all Seville are not a hugely successful club, although they are probably bigger in terms of the size of the town they are associated with.

It was a great shame it was a rout in the end, the players looked absolutely pig sick, especially poor old Hasselbank whose chin receded further than ever into his neck as he bit back the tears.

I'm a big fan of his but I think the boro performance could be down to Boateng not playing like he can. Lots of misplaced passes and stuggled to keep pace with the Seville players. I think Boro's bad run was whilst George was out injured and they turned the corner when he came back, sits in the hole and lets the rest of the midfield go forward like Makelele for Chelsea. Last night Morrison and Rochemback had to back track far too often.
