http://www.johnnyowen.com/Book_cover.jpg In book shops this Friday (May 19th), the official Johnny Owen biography - The Big If.

The book was written by an award winning sports journalist, Rick Broadbent, who has written a few books previously; it's an excellent read.

The book has been 3 years in the making and contains lengthy input from Dick Owens, Lupe Pintor, Dai Gardiner etc. etc. and all those closest to John.

Not only does it contain the story of John's life and career but also features several chapters on Pintor's life and career too. Intimate details of the lives of both men giving a fascinating insight into their characters, background and the journey that eventually brought them together.

In some ways it could be said it's two biographies for the price of one. Talking of price, the list price is £16.99 but Amazon.co.uk have it on offer for £10.18, IMO an excellect price for a newly published book of this quality.

I saw your post but didn't mention anything at the time as I hadn't finished reading the book. Thanks for the heads up. :TU:

BTW there will be a big spread in this weekends Western Mail magazine about the book.

Thanks Joe.

Was it definitely 'The Big If' you saw in WH Smiths? or was it the previously published UNauthorised biography written by Jeff Murphy? Seems a bit strange if it was The Big If as the official launch is this Friday, however Leicester is the authors hometown - might have something to do with it.

Without a doubt it was "The Big If" in Hardback I picked it up and had a look at some of the photoghraphs inside (unless my memory is playing tricks on me I seem to remember one of Johnny sat down in a gym or dressingroom looking very tired or dejected)

It was NOT the Murphy papaerback one I can assure you mate.

Actually when I saw it on the shelf I actually thought "OH!! it's out I'm suprised Owain hasn't let us know on Boxrec."

From your description of the photo it was definitely The Big If. As I said the author is from Leicester so that may have something to do with it, I'll ask him when I see him next.

When you've read the book I'd be interested in your honest appraisal of it. Cheers.
