Beyer vs Calzaghe in September

A German newspaper stated that Warren and Sauerland are negotiating foe a Super fight in September.

I don´t give Beyer a chance and because of that I can´t believe that Sauerland makes that fight, maybe because of money? It would be the end of Markus´ career.

Warren could offer enough to get Beyer his retirement fund, and it would be a big fight and raise Joe's profile even more for a mega-fight in early 07 with Tarver or Taylor.

I doubt that Warren daoesn´t make his fighters that rich. Calzaghes biggest purse till then was paid by Universum when he fought Veit in Braunschweig. That would be THE problem to fix the fight. If the fight took place in England the money would be too less. Beyer wants at least 3 million Euros.......

I reckon that is doable, but Calzaghe will be getting the thinner slice of the pie.

If they can sell the fight on HBO (they don't deal with Showtime since Jay Larkin left I don't think), and to ITV, and get a big crowd it can be done. It's a unification fight after all, and Calzaghe would have 3 of 4 belts at the end of it, presuming he wins, which he should.

Calzaghe will see it as low risk, Beyer's looked 'wibbly-wobbly' for a while now, is nearing the end, and Sauerland will probably want to cash in his chips with a big final purse.

James, where do you see the fight happen? How much tickets can Calzaghe sell in Britain?

It depends who else is on the bill how it is built up and where it is staged. They should be able to sell this to the Welsh Public who have now apparently warmed to Calzaghe more since his win over Jeff.

Perhaps boxingchat can tell us how Many tickets were sold at Calzaghe's last fight against Lacy?

It would have been a cracking fight, 5/6 years ago.

I still don't think Beyer is the same fighter after the Cateley loss.

Maybe Sauerland is starting to get bored of Beyer's career and the controvesy he seems to have when he fights some one half decent - Perhaps he sees him now as a defeat awaiting to happen, so why not in a huge fight.

Every promoter gets to a point where they figure that one of their big fighters is nearing the end, and will encourage them to take the high risk fight for big money and a retirement fund enhancing purse. Beyer probably doesn't have too many big nights left in him, and it's not like there are many people offering him big money either.

I guess it would make sense to offer good money as it would all enhance the build up for a Calzaghe v Tarver fight (for instance) if he has another belt.

Is this a superfight?

I dont see it myself - Its a few rungs down the ladder compared to the Lacy fight. On paper it appears the easiest option for Joe to chase - He wont cement his legacy fighting and beating the likes of Beyer. I class Magee a better figher to be honest.

Hohoho! Magee is better than Beyer! Based on what precisely. What utter rot, I can't wait to here an explanation for this one.

Beyer is under-rated.

I don't agree with TT's post, but can see why he could argue it.

When has Beyer last legitimately beaten someone of Tsypko's ability - most people thought Magee beat Tsypko.

He didn't legitimately beat Lucas or Green (not even in the rematch IMO)

And the rest in his second and third reign are not as good as Tsypko - and he struggled twice vs Sarnavia.

Since when?

It took him 12 rounds to catch Colajanni or however you spell his name.

At this stage of their respective careers, I do believe Magee better than Beyer - If both fighters were to meet in the next few months I believe that Magee would be the victor even more so if Beyer had to come over here to fight (7 years fighting in germany)

Beyer is the wrong side of 35 and I would question if his heart is still in the game - It wasn't that long ago that he was saying that he didnt want it anymore etc.

If we disect their respective records then of course Beyer has the better record, but like I say I fancy Magee to spoil his way to a 12 round decision over Beyer at this current time.

Beyer/Calzaghe is no superfight.

Beyer's career is almost over anyway, and he has an outsider's chance - say 25:75. I guess it's one final attempt to greatness. At least he tries (if the story is true).

As for Calzaghe, he should fight Kessler rather than Beyer, but OK. Beyer is a decent matchup too.

Two rolling eye smileys is a stellar defence Pundit.

Oh and by the way, just in case you didn't know, Kessler and his team were demanding the earth to fight Calzaghe, quite a useful tool to use when you dont want to fight someone.

I would be happy to see this fight hppening. I suspect it would end up being in the MEN or somewhere what with Warren's foolish gamble of buying exclusivity rights to promote fights there :S.

He mite not be the best option out there but even I who am certainly not shy to critisise Calzaghe will not have a go for taking a title unification fight. Lets hope this one comes off, they could even put woods on the undercard to create interest for a futour fight.

I hope Warren gets the promotional rights to stage it at the MEN, too many Sauerland fights are contriversial.
