Big George and the heavyweight Superfighter tourney

A one-day heavyweight elimination tournament featuring a world-class roster of boxers will take place during the fall in Melbourne, Australia, former heavyweight champion/grillmaster George Foreman announced yesterday.

Organizers released the names of seven fighters who will take part in the first Superfighter tourney. They will be competing for the $5 million first prize.

Superfighter participants are to include: Chris Byrd, Former IBF World Champion 39-3 (20 KO); O’Neil Bell, WBC & IBF Cruiserweight No 1, 26-1 (24 KO); Steve Cunningham, WBC Cruiserweight No 1, 19-0 (10 KO); Samuel Peter, WBC No 3, 25-1 (21 KO); Shannon Briggs, WBC No 7, 45-4 (40 KO); Alexander Povetkin, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, 7-0 (5 KO); Tye Fields, 36-1 (33 KO).

A second Superfighter event – eight fighters competing in one day in the “red hot middleweight division” – is being planned for New York City in 2007, the planners said.

Superfighter is a branded series of elimination short format tournaments featuring four three minute rounds with only the winner of each bout progressing to the semi finals and finals. The winner of the first event this fall will have fought 3 bouts and defeated 3 opponents to become the first World Superfighter Heavyweight Champion and claim the $5 million (US) prize.

George Foreman is on board to act as commentator for the event.


If the list of participants is the same when the fighters enter the ring I will eat my hat - there are top, top class fighters in that list.

Anyone remember the similar 1 day tournament held in the mid 90s? My memory of it is fairly hazey, although I think Tony Tubbs won thru against other competitors such as Tyrell Biggs and Shane Sutcliffe..cant remember much more about it to ne honest.

(I know this isn't really british boxing but I dare not enter the current scene for fear of what it might hold...)

i had heard Chagaev was in it too.

Tubbs won one similar tournament and didnt Tony Thompson win one a couple of years ago.

Over four rounds Briggs will be hard to beat, although he is a little too heavy these days....

I heard that Roman Greenberg was also supposed to compete. That was on seconds out I think. Anyway your right if they do get that lot it will be a good effort.

No way will those be the fighters in the tournament.

Mo Harris won one of these (last one?) - Tim Witherspoon, Jeremy Williams (favourite), Ray Austin were among the fighters competing for it. It was on US PPV and the event was promoted by Cedric Krushner.

The pay day for the winner was 1 million.

Is the title meant to be ironic 'superfighter' is not a word i would use to describe any of these guys 'Overrated old overweight fighters' has a nicer ring to it.

What odds the ppv is ridiculously high?

You would be better off watching a k-1 grand prix at least the fighters would be in shape.

C'mon it sounds good, when was the last time one of these occured, can't remember watching any myself, all decent HW's fighting in one night, multiple fights.

All they need now is Tyson to be the 8th fighter, and it sells over 400k PPV's

I would probably watch it but lets be honest this is a glorified toughman competition.

Why don't they just have a proper tournament spread over a year like the middleweight one a few years back?

If this does happen,and these names are going to be fighting,then I fear for poor old Tye Fields!!!!!!!!!!

Two blown up Cruisers, one Olympic prospect (who still needs more fights), two washed up fighters(Briggs and Fields.), a guy who can't handle size and a Nigerian Tua would be a good event?

The current scene would love that.

What else is there in the heavyweight division Max? To be honest i'm surprised the line up looks so good.

Also Tua was (pre Lewis) much better than Peter will ever hope to be

Wonder if the guys will go toe 2 toe and go for the big KO's or if they are content to just go the 4 rounds and win on points, my guess is we'll see some wild swings.

I'm not sure how this does any of the participants (with the exception of the older 'past it' guys) any good. How will getting KTFO by Shannon Briggs help Cunningham's career? I know $5 million is a lot of money, but it's a toss-up as to who will get it.

when guys are getting $20,000 a fight you can see the attraction...

I think this tournament will be very good if everyone turns up!!!

I'd rather watch the poor eastern Euros and our domestic scene than that!

I think i'd rather watch this tournament then watch Greenberg, Harrison, Skelton, Krence etc.
I know your patriotic Max but our domestic heavyweight scene hardly makes rivoting viewing. Give me Peter and Briggs going at it in a four rounder anyday

Skelton has more skill than Peter though,just not the punch. Ironic that Audley would lose to Peter too as he's outpointed him before as an amatuer and is more talented but is a wuss.
