Here' s a guy I think was one of the most exciting fighters of his era.
He fought as both a heavy & LH as a lot of guys in the 40 & 50's did.
Bob could hit like hell, but as often as not , it would be him taking the count. You never knew what would happen with him. Bob didn't care for the decision route. Either you were going or he was. I don't know how often he appeared on the 50's fight telecasts, but he must have been a promoters dream. He wasn't great, but boy was he exciting. Any one out their have any more information about him?

Here's the record that I have researched for him. I'm still working on adding notes about each bout, but it's complete as far as total bouts. I'm trying to put together all of his bouts that appeared on television, but it's a slow process. I don't know how the format of this record will look here on the forum...probably not too good. I have it in microsoft word format, which is even and neat.

i have bob satterfields fight with bob baker on film. baker was a big man 6'2 215lb with skills and power. baker was rated # 3 at the time. for the 1 minute it lasted, it was incredibly exciting with satterfield going right after baker and it turned into a toe to toe slugout with both getting in big licks. satterfield seemed to be getting the better of it, and then suddenly baker hurt satterfield with a right left and satterfield fell into the ropes staggered. then out of nowhere, satterfield comes up with this 4 punch combination that drops baker flat on his stomach down for the 10 count and just like that the fight was over in round 1. satterfield could bang like no other. he had frightening power.

i might also add satterfield was not just a slugger. he had good boxing skills too and had fast handspeed. he was an all around very talented fighter with frightening power and punching arsenal. his downfall was he was inconsistent and his chin.


satterfield was very good at feinting. incredibly good. you wouldnt know where his punches were coming from or when he was going to unlease them and suddenly BOOOM YOUR OUT!

That's true! Satterfield did have many distance bouts. One bout of his that went the distance which really sticks out for me is his ten round win over Tommy Gomez in 1950. Gomez, like Satterfield, hit very, very hard, extremely hard and although he was very tough he didn't have the best chin.

Gomez and Satterfield were two of the hardest hitting fighters of that era, or of any era for that matter and Gomez took a solid beating in the bout going down several times, but he managed to last. I’m just kind of surprised that Satterfield was able to stand up to the shots Gomez landed. It was just a surprise to see a bout between two such hard hitting fighters with not the best of chins last the distance.

yea barry. i think satterfield was simply the more talented and skilled fighter than gomez. satterfield was not just a slugger with no skills. the man had a lot of talent.


satterfield also outpointed 6'3 215lb nino valdes, in a wide decision. i have the fight on film. after satterfield clocked him in the first, valdes went in panick and safety mode and stayed away the whole fight petrified of satterfields power. satterfield demonstrated good boxing skills in this fight

Satterfields win over Cleveland Williams is impressive... I'd like to have that one!... the Tommy Gomez bout seems to be a real classic, is this available on tape?.... Gomez was a very interesting character himself... a war hero who was wounded 16 times!... I guess even Satterfield didn't scare him after that!!.
Though he was on tv a load of times I've found it hard to find much film of Satterfield... I think he had the record for having the most televised fights if my memory is working properly...

I have the layne and Valdes fights, shame there aren't more about...

too bad a marciano-satterfield fight never happened. it prob would have lasted at most 2-3 rounds, but while it lasted it would have been one helluva action packed fight.

the winner of satterfield layne was gonna fight marciano. satterfield came close to beating layne, but close only counts in horseshoes. too bad satterfield didnt win. i would have wanted too see a marciano-satterfield slugfest rather than that one sided beatdown rocky gave to layne

Beating Satterfield was actually the worse thing that could have happened to Layne, he was rushed along without really learning his trade and won some big fights including the Satterfield fight, on heart more than anything else and then got thrown in with Rocky who basically ruined him... Laynes manager was actually a mink farmer... which tells you a lot!.

Thanks Barry. I see he was still going strong in 1957. It makes you think an injury might have caused him to retire. He sure met the best of his era. I admire the way he would bounce back after defeats. Just get the lunch pail & back to work.

marciano was an all time KO puncher. satterfield didnt have a good chin. marciano would starch satterfield similiar to the way clarence henry did to satterfield. ezzard charles knocked out satterfield cold with one punch.

thats cause satterfield got to him first plus williams hadnt peaked yet. he was only 21 years old and took the fight on last second notice

but cleveland williams wasnt the puncher marciano was, as good as williams was.



FACT: marciano knocked out every RATED fighter he faced

Tommy Gomez hit as hard as Marciano, and Satterfield retired him for good, but I think Marciano would have starched Satterfield, unless Satterfield got to him first, which very easily could have happened. Marciano was one of the toughest ever, but he was never hit by anyone that could punch like Satterfield!

Dont forget Marcinao was a slow starter... I don't see him getting Bob out early.... infact its probably Rocky who would have the shakier start. I think this would actually go down more to fitness and stamina and that Rocky would wear Satterfield down. I wouldnt rate Marciano a bigger puncher than Williams.... most of Rockys koes came from waering down his opponents with constant bombardment... I'm not saying he didnt have a hard punch, ...but he wasnt as big a puncher as some think imo... I'd rate Williams higher.

Marciano not a bigger puncher than Williams? Do you mean Cleveland Williams? Let's see, Rocky KO'd Walcott, Charles, Moore, Lastarza, Layne, Louis, etc. Who did Williams KO? Other than Terrell it's not a very impressive list. Miteff, Rischer, Alonzo Johnson, Banks. Most of his other decent wins (and it isn't a very long list) went the distance. keene simmons who fought both marciano and williams said marciano was by far the harder puncher.




- top 20 heavyweight of all time jersey joe walcott was dropped dead with one right hand, williams never knocked out a fighter with 1 punch in the class of that.

- harry kid mathews was knocked out by 2 punches. only time in mathews 100 bout pro career he was ever drop


- joe louis was knocked out cold by a right hand


- rex layne TOOK BOB SATTERFIELDS BEST PUNCH AND GOT UP TO WIN. yet when marciano hit layne with 1 right hand, layne dropped dead out cold.




silkov u tend to think of the 54-55 marciano too much. the pre 1954 marciano was a harder puncher before he changed his style shortening his punches allowing him to throw more volume of punches, thus making him lose some one punch power.




rockys overhand right was a harder puncher than cleveland williams left hook. if marciano hit liston with his overhand right flush, liston would go down.

why would marciano need to wear satterfield out? once marciano lands the suzieQ the fight is over. this will be a repeat of layne marciano except the fight will end sooner

Rocky finished guys with one punch, but he didnt knock many top giuys out early with single shots, usually they'd been worn down and taken a beating before. Charles, Moore, Cockell, Louis and Walcott all were koed or stopped after shipping heavy punishment from Rocky. Walcott koed Charles with one punch, Marciano beat him down. Williams is just about the only fighter I've seen come close to shaking a prime Liston... he landed some shots that would have koed most heavies and broke Listons nose... all in one round... Williams had simualr power to Shavers... he could be losing and then would land one punch and end it... same with Louis.
