"Fat" Fighters

Mind you this list of 'super-heavyweights' does not include men who were really tall; such as Gogea Mitu of Romania who stood 7'4" and weighed 327 pounds.

1.) Eric 'Butterbean' Esch

2.) Claude 'Humphrey' McBride*

3.) Jimmy Black---360 pounds*

4.) "Two Ton" Tony Galento

5.) Don Cockell

6.) "The Boss" Joe Hipp

* Both these men fought eachother, and with McBride being 340 and Black being 360, they once held the record for the greatest amount of weight combined between two fighters (700 pounds).

Numbers 4-6 are not so much 'fat' but their physical appearance was not of an atheltic or average build, but more 'soft'.

Anybody else think of any fat fighters?

I remember Douglas being so derided for coming in 'fat' vs Holyfield. But today when one looks at that film and current HWs like Tua, Brewster, Johnson, Toney etc. he looks slender!

About 70% of the heavyweight fighters fighting today could make the list!

Kirk Johnson, James Toney, David Tua, Danny Williams, Hasim Rahman, Sam Peter...just to name a few, hell they are all constantly battling weight and most of the time they don't even put a half-ass effort to even come into the ring in half-decent shape!

Michael Dokes and Tony Tubbs are a couple more that immediately come to mind...and then of course there is James "Buster" Douglas!

Their were a lot of heavyweights in the eighties who started their career off in a slimmed down state and at least fairly well conditioned and then turning to flab later on. I did'nt see Dokes late in his career but he did not start out as a fat fighter. John Tate and Greg Page were a couple more examples. You could prabably trace back and find a lot of guys who did'nt start out as fat but ended up that way.

Numerous jouneymen. For example

Sammy Scaff,Donnie Long,Lionel Washington,Danny Stonewalker,
Bigfoot Martin and not forgetting the comeback kid himself, 'Big' George Foreman.

Was this fight televised? I'm sure I may have seen a clip of it on TV years ago on a sports quiz program.

Buster Douglas and James Toney get fatter every fight. I'll add Tonya Harding to this:

Greg Page was pretty much big since the start of his pro career, I think he was around 240 by his fourth or fifth professional fight.

I went back to check it out on Boxrec and he did put on weight early on, so on second glance he was one of those fighters who's weight tended to move up and down.

Ed Dunkhorst "The Human Freight Car". He was about 6' 2" and weighed anywhere up to 250 or 260, though he could fight as low as 230. When Jim Jeffries hit 220 for the second Corbett fight he was considered HUGE!
