I am looking to step up my sparring to a heavier hitting session and want to buy a couple of helmets. Are the cheap ones ok, or is there a reason for the more expensive ones?
Which ones are good?

Most internationals use the Greenhill brand.
You need to try headguards in the gym, some restrict your view, while others offer different amounts of protection, like nose bridge ect.

But if your sparing then your coach should beable to give you advice, if your not in a gym join one before you decide to spar with your mates!

You want a headguard not a helmet, unless of course your riding a motorbike

I hate it when the small buggers rob the big ones since I got a fat head!

If you intend on boxing amateur I would definately seek advice from your coach. Ask them what guards your clubs boxer uses in home shows - its quite an important decision.

None of my old club used any guards during sparring, and I'm sure if affected mine and my club mates performance in actual fights (i.e. not use to them).

So I would certainly try to get one that you'll be fighting at least your home shows in.

I am not looking to compete right now but have a background in boxing (not for a long long time though) and martial arts so not too concerned about getting a coach. Once my fitness and refelxes are better I will probably head to the gym in Crawley to see what it is like.
