Fighter dies after fight

Sadly, another boxing fatality has taken place in Indonesia. A young fighter named Fadly Kasim died after being knocked out by his opponent Jibril Soamole in the last round of a six round bantamweight fight on Saturday night at the RW Monginsidi Sports Hall, Manado, Indonesia. Kasim was heavily beaten in the last round, before he collapsed and died at the nearest hospital. According to Indopos.com, Kasim's trainer has actually asked Kasim to retire in round three, but he refused and continued the fight. Kasim becomes the 25th boxing fatality in Indonesia, and the eleventh Indonesian fighter to lose his life as a result of ring injuries since the year 2000. It was Kasim's second pro fight.

11 ring deaths in 6 years sounds like an awful lot.

even before this tragic incident, it has been increasingly clear that indonesia has WAY MORE THAN its share of fatalities...not only in relation to number of fights held, but even on a strictly numerical basis!!

there could be several contributing factors including:

1. lack of appropriate medical safeguards in terms of scrutiny by ring doctors, ambulances ready & nearby, etc

2. could be lack of diligent reffing by refs willing to let fighters take more punishment...every country has its own protocol defining what constitutes an appropriate stoppage...i remember seeing a jorge castro-john d jackson fight where castros eyes were so badly shredded that i told my friends...there arent too many countries besides mexico where that fight wouldnt be stopped!! some countries err on the side of caution, others let them "duke it out"

3. the quarry brothers, jerry & mike both died in mid-50s of pugilitica dementia, after taking less career-long punishment than others such as randy tex cobb, who seems to be functioning well by comparison...a propensity for lower threshhold of brain trauma can be determined by familial factors OR nationality genetic factors. just as black folks are more likely to get sickle-cell anemia than other groups!!

it would take one incredibly detailed study to figure out which of those factors plays a bigger role, but in the meantime medical safeguards need to be tightened until they can figure out what factors or combination thereof are the chief contributors!!

Here's my guess. South East Asian countries trainers, have a reputation for really weight draining their fighters, and from what I've seen of their exports over here from Thailand, Korea etc, they tend to produce a breed of tough, relentless and FEARLESS fighters. These two combined, and any paucity of the correct checks and medicals, is a recipe for disaster.
