Greatest Tactical Performance

Which figher fought the greatest tactical game
my choices are
Ali V Foreman
Watson v Benn
both were underdogs and both did so much more than just wait for their opps to punch themselves out
Ali unleashed some of his best ever combos in the 1st round against foreman ...... the rope a dope was born.... the gameplan was suicidal AND IT WORKED..... could anyone but Ali have pulled it off ????
as for Michael Watson......his cupped glove defence was magnificant as was his awesome counter punching.... in the end the legendary Watson outgunned and outwitted the Dark Destroyer.........

Ali-Foreman is the obvious pick; but Schmeling-Louis I is another one, as is Tunney-Dempsey I. More recently Holyfield Tyson I was a piece of brilliantly executed tactics. Outside the heavyweight division Duran-Leonard and Leonard-Hagler come to mind.

Barry McGuigan vs Bernard Taylor. Take the guy with the blinding handspeed, and work his ribs at every possible opportunity while not worrying about the rest of the fight.

That's another good one, although it had as much to do with Baer's lack of motiviation as it has with Braddock's tactics.

Was it Welcome Ncita who fought in orthodox stance up until he got his first titleshot and the finally switched to southpaw and remained that for the rest of his career? I am certain that would have puzzled his first opponent a great deal seeing he would have prepared for an orthdox opponent.

Actually, Felix Sturm did something like that. He was a left-handed fighter, and fought orthodox up until the last three rounds of the De la Hoya fight. With the fight in the balance, he dominated Oscar, and won the fights. Unfortunately, the judges were watching a different fight.
That performance popped in my head as soon as I saw this topic.
Nice moves in a losing performance I suppose. Decagon your pining over decisions you "wish would have happened" DLH got the W....get over it. Out of curiosity what was your score on DLH Sturm?

Decagon.....this of course is a completely different kettle of fish, and you know it. I also think there should be an investigation of the knockout that Floyd Patterson may or may not have achieved over Archie Moore. To this day I think Archie was simply observing the culturally accepted "siesta time" and the ref completely misunderstood and ruled it a knockout.

Interesting choices. Sanchez-Lopez I is the only of your fights that I might have come up with, myself. I could probably do a good guess of your age and location from it. Were you at any of those fights?
I knew if I mentioned Marvin Johnson poeple would start to figure out I'm from Indiana.

Was not at any of those fights but one good thing about the eighties is they always had big name fighters on television almost every week. Sean Ogrady-Hilmer Kenty you could probably ad.

How about someone explaining specificly what was so tactical about these fights listed. In alot cases, I think it was more a case of a fighter being highly motivated.
