Agree or Disagree: Ottke-Glen Johnson a Hometown Decision

That's what max's Doug Fischer said in his mailbag. I happened to see the fight on video years ago and I felt it was close, with Johnson fading over the last 4 rds. So I had Ottke scraping by. What does everyone else think? Doesn't seem fair on one of the '90s best technicians to me.

I scored it for Ottke

I also had it for Ottke. Even fight with Ottke nicking it in the end. But due to the controversy about the outcome of some of his fights many feels it is easy to just add another one to the list.

I scored it for Ottke. He was in big trouble early but pulled it out late. What makes me laugh is Steve Holdsworth used to keep on saying 'the jamaican Lloyd Bryan gave Ottke his hardest fight'. But he beat the arse off Bryan and barely beat Johnson! ha

Handy summary.

It's a myth really. Johnson 'always got robbed.' Ottke 'always got lucky'. Pains me how stupid ppl can be

Real close fight.

I had it 6-5-1 for Sven; he won it fairly imo.

Close fight, but I thought Ottke nicked it... Only stinker I saw Ottke in was vs Larsen. I had the Dane a comfortable winner there.

Yes, the refereee was dodgy for the Reid fight, and so was the score card - but I did think the right man got the verdict.

I cannot believe Joe Calzaghe was labelling Byron Mitchell the real champion - one of the worst calls for a split decision I have seen. Ottke won by miles.

Highly underated fighter, a fight with Calzaghe was no forgone conclusion.

I had Ottke-Larsen a draw. Larsen wasn't landing so much. Ottke definitely was too defensive to win. But that defense kept Larsen from doing anything of real quality. Stalemate imo. Ottke-Byron was clear but close for Ottke. Byron was boxing quite well, but - as is often the case against Ottke - wasn't allowed to do enough & got pecked off with those pesky little shots.

I had Reid beating Ottke. The ref had Robin scared to throw punches. Ottke seemed out of sorts against a physically strong man who could counterpunch, like much of the Mundine fight.

The 2003 Ottke was a shadow of the 1999/2000 Ottke though.

I do agree that the ref didn't help matters and affected Robin's game, but I still didn't see nout wrong with the decision, thats not saying Robin wouldn't have beaten that version of Otkke with a fairer ref - he probably would have.

I can see why Larsen vs Ottke can be seen close, but I think Larsen just did the more work - dull one.

very true. But Reid and Mundine gave him trouble by waiting for the shorter, stumpy armed, physically weaker Ottke to come in, & pick him off. At totally different stages, so that's what I see as his weakness (obviously he deserves credit for finding the shot to beat Mundine). IMO Ottke could easily have been a middleweight.

Larsen did more work but Ottke seemed to be moving out of the way of it or blocking it. That's how I saw it. Ottke did some good work in terms of punching, but nowhere near enough

I definitely thought Reid beat Ottke, and without that ref it wouldve been worse for Svenny imo.
