Will Sports Illustrated ever have a Boxing Cover again?

Serious Question....anyone know the last issue that had a cover picture featuring boxing? Was it Tyson? Or has there been one since? Klitchko's maybe?

Is it ever going to happen again? Have any MMA's graced the cover?

Good question, and just think Gypsy Joe Harris ,who wasnt even a champ was once on the cover. As was Tyson before he was champ.

Sure. But it will take a super fight that lives up to the hype that involves fighters who can be identified by their first names.

I beleive boxing is making a come back of sorts. It is getting more press these days. Boxing is one of the best sports to photograph.

I don't see any SI MMA Cover shots.

i feel that they will cover another fighter.if there is either
tragedy or racial tension
sports illustrated has no interest in the sport except for human interest
stories.the sport of boxing is not main stream to them.

I would guess that De La Hoya has been on the cover and possibly Roy Jones, but I don't know. There hasn't been a lot of covers that were not heavyweights...I have a 1979 issue of BI with Danny Lopez on the cover. I'd certainly be interested in knowing the total number of boxing covers.

It has been a while since a fighter has been on the cover of SI. SI usually only covers the big fights/fighters But I'm surprised that Lennox Lewis Lewis (no I can't stand him but he was champ for a while there), RJJ or the Klitschko brothers haven't gotten one. Like I said and as have one of our brothers mentioned previously, SI doesn't cover anything but the big fights. I think the problem is that few sportswriters have boxed or been fans.

>>>The Klitschko brothers suck. The only time fighters of their calibre are on the cover of Sports Illustrated is when it's a picture of them being knocked out by better fighters.<<<

Amen to that!!!

for the record, my suggestion that they might have made the cover was for the "human interest" aspects that the publishers might have thought were worthwhile for sales. I truly doubt that pure sports aspects would lead SI to consider boxing as the cover story in the future.

Someone else already alluded to that I believe.

It was Mike Tyson, around the time of the Danny Williams fight. It'll happen again. There haven't been any mixed-martial-artists on the cover, mostly because all of the best fighters are in Japan right now, but when PRIDE starts promoting in America more, it'll happen.
You are right about the best MMA guys in Japan. Big disparity I think. Hughes is tough in UFC though. But overall the Pride guys are much better I think.
This past Tuf series was not impressive IMO.

Yeah ,I saw Penn get the choke on him.St Pierre could pull it off, I dont see him getting arm barred again the way Hughes caught him last time. St Pierre is a much better striker also.
im real impressed with Fedor.
Im also a little partial to Karo Parisyan in UFC.
