Max Schmeling would have owned the 1930s had it not been for politics and Joe Louis. The only other fighter with the tools to beat him was Max Baer, but Baer was too inconsistent.

I have this fight. A short right hook from Schmeling and Stribling was finished.

Pundit, I agree with you there...

Louis was just a ring Legend (and boy he fought like one), Schmeling wasn't as good as Louis, (which is a shame, because I've got a lot of time for Max Schmeling)...

As regards to Max Baer, I can see this 2 fighting to a stand-still or a bitter draw, but yes, Schmeling was more consistent
(and I think he punche d slightly harder, as Louis said that Schmeling was the hardest hitter he encountered, before he returned to the ring to fight Marciano)

Well, Baer knocked Schmeling out, but this was when Baer was peaking and Schmeling went through a low period (he also lost to Steve Hamas at the time, a loss he avenged with ease later).

this stribling fight shows u how good a puncher with that right hand schmeling was. stribling in over 300 bouts WAS NEVER KNOCKED OUT, yet one right hand from schmeling finished off stribling. stribling was a very hard man to knock out. schmeling could really wack.

schmeling was bettter than baer and he would have wupped baer in the rematch. people forget the baer-schmeling fight was dead even entering the 10th

It would seem he was not better than Baer when Baer showed up. One could argue that Baer accomplished less however.

well schmeling didnt show up in the baer fight, i think schmeling would have won the rematch

I agree. The Schmeling that fought Baer in '33 and Hamas in '34 was not the Schmeling who knocked out Hamas easily in '35 (a tko with 7 knockdowns) or who knocked out Louis one year later.

..... or who knocked out Risko in 29 and Stribling in 31. Schmeing went through a rough spell, he was the rare type of a fighter who, after a setback, got his act together again and peaked a second time.
