Just watched Foreman vs Lyle, lordi, what a war that was, up there with Hagler vs Hearns. They were both out of it by the end of the fight, I can't recall any other HW fight I've seen as frenetic as the last 2 rounds of this one. Foreman was quite lucky his career didn't end there and then. It shows he could take a punch and come back though, something I'd never really credited him with before, having only really seen the walkovers vs Frazier and Norton and his fight with Ali.

He proved in his 2nd career that he could take a huge shot

One of the best 5 rd fights ever. It beats Hearns V Hagler because it was two big heavy hitting heavies. It doesn't get better than that. Foreman I think proved in this fight what a chin he had. He took shots that King Kong wouldn't have taken.....

All of this is true, but in pure boxing terms this wasn't the greatest match...

Top viewing here. Lyle stands up to Foreman and off they go in rd 4. Look at some of the haymakers Foreman lands in between the knockdowns!

Getting decked for the second time, landing hard on your face then getting up to KO the guy next rd. Quality

Also because it was give and take the whole fight, while Hagler-Hearns was pretty much over after the 2 min mark of the first round.

Try getting Shavers vs Lyle... perhaps an even better fight... shame Shavers never got in with Foreman, I think it would have been another up and down classic.

I hate this fight. Real sloppy, I can't stand to watch it - no kidding. I prefer cleaner battles between lighter foes.

Wow;not arguing with your opinion or anything, but its rather shocking hearing, or rather reading, that someone did not like this ultimate of slugfest. I have converted more people into true fight fans by playing them the tape of that bout than any other of the fights I own.

Hmm... I don't know, I just didn't like it. I thought it was very lazy and clumsy altogether - I would infact rather watch something like Benitez-Cervantes, Pep-Famechon or Monzon-Briscoe II than Foreman-Lyle. I thought Lyle-Shavers was better, much sharper punching all-round and a brutal ending.

just two hudge punchers that's about it. If this is boxing then im not a real boxing fan I quess. I was amazed to be honest at first how bad Foreman technically really was. Id take Hagler Hearns over that anyday.

I'm glad someone else is with me. Really, Foreman-Lyle was very ugly.

Actually, it gets pretty wild but compared to some other HW fights-Lewis-Klitschko, both guys show pretty fair skills. Foreman displays an excellent hard jab, and does some great work vs Lyle against the ropes with straight punching, something he neglected in Zaire.

I also think that whether or not you know the ending of a fight plays a HUGE part in your enjoyment of it. I didn't watch Gatti-Ward I live. I was at Kostya Tszyu's fight against Ben Tackie. Yeah, I liked the fight, but it wasn't the same as if I'd waited to see this great brawl, it happened and Ward pulled off a slim decision with a late knockdown. I knew what was going to happen, and it wasn't as interesting. If you know that round 4 of Foreman-Lyle is full of action, how can you enjoy it as much as someone who saw it for the first time without knowing the outcome? If you know Foreman's going to get off the canvas, put Lyle there, and return himself before getting up and finishing the round, how exciting can it be?

I agree which is why I like to know what it was like for people who remember watching Duran-Leonard I, Monzon-Benvenuti, Pryor-Arguello...

My bets moments have been when I've watched a fight as live or without knowing the result: Hagler-Hearns, Foreman-Moorer, Holyfield-Bowe II, Tyson-Berbick, Hearns-Leonard II, Benn-Mclellan, Benn-Eubank I and II...

Fights that weren't as good because I knew the result: Chavez-Taylor, Chavez-Whittaker, Holyfield-Tyson...

The (sadly) late Jimmy Young always had the skills and ring savvy/intellegence to handle big, powerfull sluggers untill the drugs, drink and Boxing politics sapped his desire and drained his body.

He had the speed and techniquie to outpunch them and the defence to avoide their huge punches. He was an underated bodypuncher as well in my opinion.

Agree 100%. And not just the big punchers, because he gave Norton and Ali all they could handle as well. In general I think he’s underrated historically. With slightly different (better) scoring, we would be saying that he beat Shavers, Norton, Foreman, Ali and Lyle twice.
