Mexican champion, fact or fiction

Post by turfeye »

A colleague who is a writer recently interviewed a guy who claimed he was a champion amateur super-flyweight in Mexico during the late 1960's early 1970's. His name is Carlos Moreno. He says he was 152-0, but never won any medals in the Olympics of 1968 or 1972 because he was taken ill and had to forfeit his first-round bouts, accounting for the only two losses of his career. This sounds fishy to me. He makes the Olympic team twice and every four years he gets too sick to fight?
I've searched all over the Internet trying to find some place to verify the claims. My colleague doesn't want to look foolish by printing something that is not true. But without verification, there is also no way to prove the guy might be telling the truth.
Anybody have any suggestions?

He is lying, there is no super flyweight division in the amateur ranks.
