Corcoran firing on all cylinders

Hennessy Sports team member Billy Corcoran was in the condition of his career as he stepped on the scales ahead of his clash against Carl Johanneson for the vacant British super featherweight title at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old, who was buzzing, came in 2lbs under the 9st 4lb limit this afternoon, whilst his opponent registered 9st 3lb 8oz.

“Thanks to all the work I have put in with my trainer Robert McCracken, I am in the shape of my life,” said Corcoran shortly afterwards. “I have never felt this fit before. I have been training hard for this fight for a long time now. I can be impatient sometimes. I just want to get in there and have a tear-up, so I’m glad the fight is tomorrow.”

Corcoran is expecting his fire to be met with fire.

“I don’t like to take a backward step,” he continued. “Neither does Johanneson. A lot of people have said that this is going to be the fight of the year and I think they could be right. I am going to take everything he has got and come back with more. I think I am going to win the British Title and as I have already said, I don’t think the fight will go the distance. I am going to repay the faith my promoter Mick Hennessy has put in me.”

If it does prove to be an affair of attrition, Corcoran will have support to help him through. He was born in Galway, so a strong Irish presence is expected at the historic York Hall.

“The local Irish Community has started to get behind me,” explained Billy. “I’m really proud to have their backing. I fight out of Wembley and representing London means everything to me, but I will never forget my roots. I hope I can give all the Irish people over here someone to cheer on.”

Junior Olympic gold medallist John O’Donnell, who also has strong Galway ancestry, appears in an eight rounder on the bill against Darren Gethin. Gethin is coming off a big win over former Commonwealth Title challenger Craig Dickson.

Corocran will get cut in half.........

Should be a good fight between two fighter's who like to go forward,cant see there being a stoppage.Hard one to call who win's having not seen much of Carl Johanneson but what i have saw,it will be close.

Stay off the crack..... Johanneson is a puncher and Corcoran game but fragile....equals Johanneson stoppage in 5 rounds.

ARSEHOLE,i am only giving my opion but i cant see Johanneson stopping cororan,he might win on points.Who ever wants it more tonight will win.

Great fight whilst it lasted, Corcoran just didn't hit hard enough to stand toe to toe with Johanneson whose own shots were having an effect everytime they lasted.

I know they won't be happy with the stoppage as their plan was for Carl to tire late but I think Billy was only heading to the canvas in that fourth round. I think the ref stopped him taking a few more unnessesary shots. And I don't really want to defend IJL after his judging of the Power fight. Corcoran can come again and i'm even more convinced now that a fight between Johanneson and Arthur would be a cracker. Domestically he's at number 2 now and would beat the likes of Burns and Doc if he stays at the weight.

Murray was impressive again and I don't think it will be too long before he is at this level. Little dig at Amir Khan last night when they mentioned some other people are fighting people not only a few levels below them but also a few weight classes lighter.

Carl had too much for him,very game performance from Corcoran though.

On a side note it is always funny to see the pikeys in the crowd!The girls with their big hoops,and the fellas strutting like their prize fighting champions themselves!!! They throw more feints and punches than the boys in the ring!!
And it's quite a giggle watching their reaction when their boy get's a beating

All in all,a good fight.Corcoran can definately come again,no doubt.

Corcoran got caught up in the pressure of the fight and thought he'd try and beat Carl at his own game. This was Corcoran's first big headlining fight and i think he can learn from it, he has to follow the gameplan and not try and show how hard he is by taking it to the other guy.

As for Carl , i'm glad he won as i've always liked his style, seems a good bloke as well, In an ideal world i'd love to see him face Alex Arthur, but i can't see that one happening anywhen soon.
You've also got Kevin Mitchell, but i'm not sure that he won't step up in wieght soon, Mitchell wieghed 137 for his last fight, and seemed comfortable there. If it did happen though neither Carl or Kevin would be taking a backward step.
Ricky Burns as well in the super feather division, after his showing against Arthur he'd be an excellent opponent for Carl as well.

Think Corcoran should try and make Featherweight.

Cracking fight, well done Johannson - I'm sure Corcoran should come again. A fight with Bernard Dunne would be very atmospheric.

Thought the stoppage was premature a tad.

Good fight, maybe the stoppage was a little early but there was only going to be one winner from there.

It was one of those stoppages that maybe was premature, but you could also only see one winner at the time, Carl.

Corocran's legs had gone and his head was being knocked back like a rag doll, defintely no reason to see that go on any longer. Wrong fight, wrong time.

Johanesson looked really solid, very impressive, hard to believe he got iced in a round awhile back.

Hadn't seen much of Corcoran but looking at his record I didn't fancy his chances of keeping Johansson off. Tried to bite off way too much in the end.

I'd like to see Corcoran v Danny Hunt though for a quality box-fight.

He's the nephew of the first black footballer to play in the FA Cup final in this country Albert Johanesson who played for Leeds who was a South African

A fight between Dunne and Coran would be very atmostpheric anywhere in Ireland but a match between the two is unrealistic . Corcoran would be best served by going down to Featherweight but Dunne is still a Super Bantamweight despite fighting at Featherweight many times . But that's not the main opstacle , which simply is class . Dunne is European level at least while Corcoran has failed at British level and judging by what I saw last night Dunne would shutout Corcoran if he wouldn't stop him .

Corcoran should go down to Feather , but if he doesn't he should look at a fight against Andrew Ferrans which would put him right back in British title title contention again .

Ahem..hate to blow my own trumpet. Made £350 on Johanneson. Good fight though. Did look like man against boy.

Whilst stoppag emay have looked premature, if you look at Billy's reactions when it is stopped - first puts his hands up to indicate 'ready' as if is getting a standing count in the amateurs. Then as is turned away still looks like doesn't know what is going on...he takes a bit of time to realise and complain.

How much of Carl have you seen?
He looked like a real handful with his 'American' style, rolling+dipping throwing hooks and uppercuts in fast combinations.
His jab looked likea ramrod as well, really stepped into it.

Have seen a couple of fights, and whilst he has his weaknesses (has lost 2) I was certain he would punch too hard.

I actually thought Corcoran looked good, but ultimately lacked the firepower to discourage Johanneson.

Seen a few Johannesen fights, and he's looked pretty good every time. Havn't seen his losses, but neither was that bad considering the opposition.
His first was a SD against fellow prospect Koba Gogoladze (now 19-1) , a fight in which both were down. I think he just got caught cold in his second loss, the 1st round KO to Kirakosyan.
This is the same Kirakosyan that KO'ed Giuseepe Lauri, and lost on points to hard hitting, future light welterweight titlist Juan Urango, and is unbeaten since his loss to Michael Gomez.

Carl looked great in the fights I saw of him, been training in Philly I believe, and boy did it show, I really thought he was going places, and he still might, though I think he's 27 now, so time is of the essence, nice compact style, really evil hooks to the body and mixed his shots well. He might be the kind of fighter who gets better and better over time and those losses might not matter too much if he can record some decent victories against fringe contender level.

simply - Corcoran is possibly a better boxer than Johansson but once Carl realised that Billy couldnt hurt him on the inside then Carl just went to work on him
