these 2 horribly underated middleweight greats of the 1940s never met up, who would win this fantasy matchup prime for prime??

If I had the money of say...a Rockefeller I would start a foundation for the research of these greats from the past. First on my list would likely be Jeanette, Burley and Booker. Partly because there may be enough time to capture info from some still living witnesses of their lives.



Moreso for Burley and Booker but the clock has not completely run out for those from Joe's era. But soon all that potential history may be lost forever.

Is there no footage of Booker at all? Apart from Burley - O B Smith is there any more footage on him? Impressive stats on Booker, have to say! How much footage is available from this era 40's - 50's. Moore, Charles, Marshall, Williams, Bivins, Maxim, Johnson, Lytell, Sheppard etc etc.??

The only footage of Booker is perhaps him working Burley's corner in the Oakland Billy Smith fight. Booker helped train Burley for that one.

They were due to fight each other twice and Burley pulled out of both matches.

Cerdan V Holman Williams was filmed, but is lost (or maybe not).

There is footage of Moore V Billy Smith and Bivins; Charles V Bivins and Marshall and Lloyd Marshall V Mills and Rux. I have never seen anything on Lytell or the Hatchetman (but it could be out there).

I'm certainly glad we have the Burley-Smith fight.

Oakland Billy Smith looks like a beast compared to Burley. Burley looks like a clever, tricky guy with lots of feignting and head movement. Shame there's no footage from bouts with Charles, Moore, Williams etc.
Forever a point of debate!

Even though he was a full grown lightheavyweight (and a good one), Smith is completely intimidated by Burley's presence.

Burley bossed the entire fight, dominating a good fighter a full weight class above his own.

There is also film of Lloyd Marshall vs. Tommy Farr (very late in Farr's career).

And also film of Lloyd Marshall vs. a German fighter in Germany
(is that the Rux you refer to?)

I have seen brief footage of Holman Williams in action when he
fought in a bout on a card that had Joe Louis in the main event.
As I recall, the footage was shot with a home movie camera.
It is possible that the footage of Williams in action was shot in
order to make sure the movie camera was working.

In regards to fighters such as Williams, Charley Burley,
Eddie Booker, Lloyd Marshall, and Jack Chase, take a
look at their records. That is all of the evidence that
you need in regards to their abilities as fighters. They
may have lost some bouts, but that is due to the fact
that they were facing top fighters much of the time.

I haven't posted here in a while - though I used to be an editor (but was bumped off for some reason). The 2nd edition of the book is ready, but I am having reservations about putting it out. There has been some interest, but I don't know if I can justify it financially. I am well and truely on the fence at the moment - I just need a push.

Any idea where I could get hold of that Williams clip? I would love to see that - no matter how brief. (Did you follow the world cup this year?). You are spot on with careers and records of this group of fighters. I think Burley and Booker is a 'flip-of-a-coin' job. What an exhibition of the sweet science that would have been.

I have not seen the Farr footage. Both were old at the time (there was not much in years between the two if I remember correctly - though Farr had the longest career), and as such I am not in a hurry to see it - though Marshall himself is good to watch because of his style.

Decagon:

Lloyd (supposedly) wore the cuffs a great deal, so it would be no surprise if he didn't try too hard in the Rux fight. He was alleged to have it down to such a fine art that it would not always be obvious. Rux was a fair puncher and probably had 15-20 lb on Marshall - so who knows.

Farr's much bigger bone structure enables him to take it

but after the fight Marshall stands before the camera grinning without a robe on

while Farr comes over, looking pretty miserable, and pulling the hood of his hooded robe tightly so that only a few inches of his face show in the center.
