Marlon Starling in trouble.

HARTFORD - Former world welterweight boxing champion Marlon Starling has been charged with failing to pay support for his three children.
Starling, 47, a Hartford native who now lives in East Hartford, was released on $2,000 bail Friday after being arrested in Southington Thursday night. He appeared in Hartford Family Court Friday afternoon and was told to return on Aug. 16.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said Starling owes more than $30,000 in back child support payments and interest. In March 2002, he was ordered to pay $83 a week in support.
An arrest warrant was issued for Starling in September 2005 because he failed to appear in court on the child support allegations.
During a 12-year career in which he earned more than $2 million in prize money, Starling was 45-7-1 with 27 knockouts. The two-time champ retired after losing the World Boxing Council welterweight title to Maurice Blocker on a split decision Aug. 19, 1990.
Starling denied that he owes as much as Blumenthal said, but said he plans to get caught up with the payments.
"I'm going to do what I have to do," he said. "I was embarrassed for getting into this situation, but there's a lot of good people who have run into these problems."
Starling blamed his falling behind on the payments on bad investments and a lack of work.
"I'm a good father," he said. "It takes more than money to be a dad."
I still remember Starling giving our own Lloyd Honeyghan a beating. To this day Starling says he was robbed against Donald Curry.

I wouldnt say he was robbed against Curry, he just didnt do enough to win... Curry was the aggressor in both fights and that was the difference really....

Class fights the ones with Curry, fantastic to see such boxing masters in action. Curry deserved the wins though.

The first fight (12 rounder for the USBA and NABF titles) was really close, could have gone Marlon's way in the judges cards and not be called a robbery. I feel that in their second fight (15 rounder) Curry took it from him in the championship round with the aggression that you mentioned.
Either way both were very good fights, I wish we could see more of those these days at 147 and not the ridiculous mismatches that we get.
I had a chance to speak to Marlon about a month ago in Canastota and he struk me as a very likeable character who still loves the sport, real happy to engage in conversations about boxing with strangers. I sure hope he beats the rap... the original "Magic Man"

Some people now go on about how Curry was overrated but in his prime he was a really awesome boxer/puncher... I think part of his down fall was that he neglected his boxing skills a bit as he got into his 147 reign and seemed to think he could ko everyone... that said, the Honeyghan that beat Curry was a very good fighter...
Curry vs Starling was a bit like the Griffith vs Rodriguez fights of the 60s.... nothing much between both of them....

Starling would often switch off and lounge on the ropes or simply go into a defensive mode with a limited output. Honeyghan could have won that fight by outhustling him and outpunching him. He was never going to knock him out. Starling was too cagey and too crafty and had a good chin. In the end Honmeyghan couldn't have fiught a worse fight. A shame because with a different game plan i thought he could have pulled it off.

I guess to stay on the topic of the article, I have to note that once again, here is a professional fighter who have earned more than $2,000,000 in 12 years, but still can't pay child-support.
Who is managing these guys assets?

2million probably means Marlon got circa 1.3 million once he had paid manager and trainer....
Tax wise i am not sure what the rates are in the US (assume for arguments sake that its 30%) then that leaves approx 845k over 12 years... so thats 70k a year... which is around 40k GBP...
Hardly big city earnings.....
