Anyone know what the former UK Goldenboy is up to these days?

Years ago I heard he was working as a stand up comic and doing some sort of work for Channel 5.

Any info' fight fans?

One of my favourites from the 80's. A very skilled guy although by all accounts was far more suited to the amateur ranks.

I remember him advertising his services in the trade magazines about 3-4 years ago offering one on one boxing tuition and training. Not sure if he is still doing that.

Well passed his best, he served as a Eubank sparring partner during 'ol nostirls tenure as WBO champ.

That was the last I saw of him...

Technically the best of all the '80s British middles.

Unfortunately had perhaps the worst chin i have ever seen on a potentially world class fighter.

At one point didn't Errol blame a problem with his calf muscles for losing some fights?

I dont think Christie had such a bad chin to start with, the problem seemed to be that he couldnt recover when hurt... the losses to Kaylor and Boston were no shame as they were good fighters, but later in his career Christie seemed unable to take any sort of shot... his fight with Micheal Watson was very sad as Errol was totally shot....
With hindsight Errol was probably never the same fighter after the Kaylor war...

he's a personal trainer.seen him training up a couple of celebrities. spars a little with the people he trains up.still in great shape,and a very nice fella.

Yes, he racked up a good few wins and was ranked in the top 15 in the world at one stage... Jesus, imaging if Hagler fought him?

Even when he started losing, I have his fight on Quinones on tape he was still being touted as opponents for Graham and Benn... Anyone know why these didn't happen?

Also, anyone know what happend to him between 1990 and 1993. He was inactive and boxing monthly used to make a point in their rankings stating he wasn't considered cause he was illegable... Why was this?

Errol currently works at, and I think runs, Gymbox in Holborn, have seen Demon Hague there a few times as well.

Because everytime Errol got close to the big time, his chin would let him down and it'd back to square one.

Record breaking amateur and his chin was ok then, don't think he ever got KO'd in a long amateur career. Then, suddenly, it was over inside 30 secs against the big Belgium Seys - what a SHOCKER that was. Live on ITV and people were laughing ringside because it was just so unlikely.

The Golden Boy flattened by the first harmless looking punch thrown.

He was so highly rated that even Manny Steward got in on the act, having him at the Kronk to spar Hearns and have a couple of fights over there too. Wore the gold Kronk trunks for awhile too.

What was the story between Christie and Kaylor when they had a scrap at a press conference, was there bad blood between the two of them beforehand? , or was it just something that happened at that moment?

I think Mark resented the Golden Boy getting all the press, and Errol had been calling him out for awhile and saw him as easy pickings I think. When they came head to head at the press conf to announce fight, Kaylor made some comment and Christie went for it.

What a fight that was, 5th Nov - both down in the first round and the West Ham supporters letting off bangers in the Royal Albert Hall as Kaylor knocked him down.

The last time I saw Kaylor fight was an Anglo/Swedish bill at The Latchmere in Battersea ( vs Erricson?? I thnk) in the early 90's

He looked awful even when stopping a limited opponent in 4 rds

I never really took to him and supported Christie when I went to see that fight

In truth, neiher was much more than top level domestic or low level European

There were a lot of people being built up like that in the 80's though. More so than now ,I think when people outside boxing don't really care. I guess it was easier to con non boxing folk into thinking Keith Wallace and Pat Barett were potential world beaters when they were shown regularly on TV

I really did think that Pat Barett was going to be at least challanging for a major world title, Not just the WBO one he did. Pat won the EBU title in Italy and defended it 4 times, but i think the long layoff he took before challanging Manning Galloway affected him. He never seemed in that fight mentally, after that he was never the same.

I bumped into Errol a couple of time when he was residing in the Lewisham area. The last time was quite a while ago but he was helping out down the Eltham ABC. He said he was wanting to pursue that and I'm pleased to hear he's now working and/or running a gym.

I remember having a bad feeling about that fight when it was announced. I was rinside for that fight and Christie looked completely shot, no legs.

Being put in with a peak Watson was just asking for trouble I hope he was well paid.

They had a Question of Sport celebration not too long ago, in which Ian Botham picked Errol on the picture board and said "Christie".
"Which one?" countered Dave Coleman, given Lloyd was also boxing.
It was a painful reminder of how marginalised boxing is today.
