My Training Partner Met Clinton Woods the other day

He came to our local boxing gym to train. Apparently a nice, humble, down to earth bloke. Interesting snippets according to my bud:
1. Clinton put on 17lbs after the weigh in on his last fight
2. Fighting RJJ was something else, hes on another level he doesn't buy all the overhyped none sense.
3. He was offered 250k by SN to fight Cal, hes getting more than double against Johnson.
4. Clinton reckons he would ko Calazage in 4-5 rounds but says Calazage will never get in the ring with him and says Joes overhyped for beating a limited hype job.
5. Clinton looked around 14-15stones, very big currently.
I heard a few tip bits I can't really mention on a forum (can't give away clints secrets to Calazage). He looked impressive and powerful on the Bag. I'd be interested in checking out Clintons dieting techniques, he looked powerful on the bag apparently
Not sure if thats all common knowledge or not, but I'll have to go down next time hes in town.

17lbs between the wiegh-in and fight time?

WTF!
If that's true, the we could see Clinton moving up to Cruiserweight, or maybe even HW! What you reckon?

I wonder what Calzaghe fans will say about those comments. Especially #4.

How is Woods getting over half a million for fighting Johnson? The purse bid was barely over 500 thousand, wasn't it?

I remember Woods turning down the Calzaghe fight after beating Hoye, BBC had Joe on the phone and Woods didn't want to hear what Joe had to say. Now I see Woods is clamouring for that fight...yet turned down 400K? (so says boxingtwat)
That 500K is most likely BS too.
Joe hands Wood his arse on a plate.

Just to give you the full story. Having been nominated as number 1 contender by the IBF, Clinton Woods was approached with a contract to fight Joe Calzaghe. Woods signed the contract to fight Joe Calzaghe, the only signature that was being waited upon was that of Calzaghe's. After Woods had signed the contract, Calzaghe however then demanded that the fight be for the vacant title, when the IBF wouldnt grant this, Calzaghe withdrew his interest and dissapeared.
When Woods then went on to win the vacant title,
opportunist Joe suddenly turns up on a phone line, straight after Woods' career-best victory, and is all of a sudden interested in the fight. Not surpisingly Woods (surely remembering the way Calzaghe shamelessly attempted to use Woods' number 1 position to get himself an easy-ride straight to a shot at the light-heavyweight world title) basically told the cheeky prick to fook-off.

So my point remains....what comes around, goes around.
What good would that do Calzaghe, moving up and fighting Woods who had no title. You make it sound like Calzaghe was desperate for a shot at his title, BBC would've had all this planned, and Joe accepted.

No idea, but didn't Frank say he was interested in the fight for Joe?

Yes with a title, he's included Wood's name in with a bunch of other possible matchups.

Any word on who the other matchups are? I haven't been to the BBC site lately so I'm not in tune.

Thats exactly the sort of arrogance that pissed off Clinton Woods and Fight Academy.
Joe Calzaghe is stepping up a division, He's never fought at Light-heavy and has it all to prove at the weight. Therefore why shouldnt Calzaghe fight the IBF's Number 1 contender, without a title being on the line?
Basically Calzaghe and Warren are two cuntz who want everything easy. Arent fighters suppossed to earn their right for a title shot? Just as Clinton Woods has.

He likes to throw names around alot, in the past he's mentioned Hopkins, Kessler, Taylor, Winky, Johnson, Jones, Woods. The most recent interview I can remember on there (after Johnson fell thru) mentions winner of Taylor/Winky is number one target.

Well it dont make sense when there are better opposition out there, who bring more money also. Woods has hardly been unfortunate in title stakes, christ after being totally dominated by Jones, wins 3 fights and gets another shot at IBF. Draws that (should've lost) and gets another shot at the VACANT title, again losing. So then he beats DeLisle (who he's already beaten before) again for the VACANT title. He should be happy where he is now. Not to mention IBF are one of the worst boxing commisions. Have you seen their current rankings? A shit load of non rated's

He beat Hoye for the vacant title. He beat DeLisle (for the first time) for the right to fight Hoye.

I saw Woods at the Gammer vs Francis bill. He didn't look hardly any smaller than Enzo Mac and Amateur star Kevin Evans (Super Heavy).
There was a Welsh fighter there, who had just signed with Paul Boyce - who 3 times by Simon Goodhall announced as a Light Heavyweight. He is going to struggle, no matter how skilled if that is the case. He looked much smaller than the three of them.

That's because they use eliminaters to fill their #1 and #2 positions , which means that someone has to at least beat someone decent(normally) to become mandatory .

Stu, was it you who told me that you'd seen Enzo in the crowd at a Gammer show, where Maccarinelli looked far bigger than Scott?
Only asking, because I've been thinking about Haye and the whole heavyweight thing. For me, Enzo looks to have a huge frame (not so much wide, but he looks massive, without being ripped) whilst Haye really does look pumped-up: huge pecs, biceps, etc. Whilst Macca looks big, but without the bodybuilder style thing going on.
Just asking, because I really don't buy this 'Haye is outgrowing the cruiserweights' thing. Of course, if it wasn't you who saw Maccarinelli, please ignore this......

I was going in Dollars, to give Woods the benefit of the doubt. No way is Clinton getting half a million quid, surely?
I'd love to know how, if he is.

Clinton reckons he would ko Calazage in 4-5 rounds but says Calazage will never get in the ring with him and says Joes overhyped for beating a limited hype job.
Yet the BBC have him quoted as saying Joe would win and hoping he did before the fight.

woods strikes me as a nice bloke good luck to him, I think he could toast calzaghe just cos of the size of him and the fact that calzaghe hasn't had many hard fights in his carrer and Woods leaves his hart and sole in the ring.

Exactly.
The purse bid was $525,000, for Johnson and Woods to share.
Maybe Woods was told by his manager the offer to fight Joe Was £250k, but Warren did offer £400k

Id give Woods a break. He's been dominating a couple of top ten guys and he'd probably be the toughest opponent out there for Calzaghe. Sure kessler's the closest to a peer right now, but Woods is bigger and has that accurate right hand, & we know how open Calzaghe is to right hands.

Woods would of course say he would batter Calzaghe, but I think there's a bit of kiddology here. I've stood next to Clinton, he's no sodding way a huge bloke, he's no bigger than I am, and I'm about 13 stone 10, and would probably weigh a bit more than that with some floorwork and the like, but having seen Haye and Nelson and Woods, they are both FAR bigger men than Woods, who has a pretty small frame.
I think Woods would give Calzaghe a hard fight at best, and maybe even beat him, but do him in 4-5 rounds, no way jose. Woods is just talking big, and that's normal, he's a fighter after all, but I doubt even he would
I like woods a lot, he's a good solid, honest pro, and he's done things the hard way and come out on top. He's not the most dominant of champs, but he seems to be improving and seems more confident with his belt and could secure a decent legacy for himself
I'd LOVE to see Woods fight Calzaghe, great domestic matchup, one of the best for years in my opinion, and could surely be sold to the british public. SOMEBODY PLEASE MAKE THIS FIGHT HAPPEN.
