It's a shame as he could of and definately should have beaten the one dimensional and limited Baldomir.... :TU:

If I were Hatton, I'd bump up the date of that Urkal fight so I could make a fight with Baldomir ASAP. With back to back wins over Judah and Gatti, his stock is as high as it will ever be. The fight is also more sellable in terms of PPV now.

Baldomir was just the better boxer, with the better defense. Gattis lack of guard was yet again exposed, why has he never been taught to keep a tight guard, that brutal beating wasn't necessary.

Anyone thinking Baldomir would be easy for Hatton will be in for a shock. Baldomir may well outbox Hatton. He now has as good a recent CV as PBF

BTW Was Sky completely biased or is their a rule in boxing stating if Gatti takes a right hand to the head it doesn't count? Because they had the fight 50-50 going into the last 2. I had Gatti winning 1, at most 2 rounds the whole fight.

They still haven't sewed up all the particulars yet, and Floyd has a November date already saved. For that fight to take place, he'd have to bump the Urkal fight to October, and he'd only have a 10 week training camp, and he'd have to stay at 147 for 8 weeks aftere, which he can't do.

I thought Watt seemed pretty generous to Gatti, he did get some big shots in but when they exchanged it was Baldomir who'd get the last word in. Even when Gatti boxed he looked like he was forcing himself. It was really alarming the way his legs went during the fight. Baldomir is a non-hitter but hits cruelly as the other guy is getting a prolonged beating. He looked super-confident at times.
Harold Lederman had it either 6-2 or 7-1 on his card going into the 9th. I had it 6-2, and I just couldn't see more than 3 rounds that were close enough for Gatti to win.

Sad to see...very few people actually giving Carlos Baldomir getting any credit. he actually won the fight, and he beat Judah also. Ppl trip all over themselves to give another former journeyman type credit, Glen Johnson, for emerging from mediocrity with good wins

a reporter asked the Sycuan promoter in the post-fight presser if Judah would be back in the picture....I have to believe it was a NY writer by the speech pattern and accent, and I give credit to Sycuan for squashing that rematch. He said they already beat him, why fight again.

I believe Mayweather is the WBC #1 and is very available, and Carlos wants the fight, so Baldomir will get his due with a good PPV deal.

Mass Sky over commentry from Sky...Watt spoke utter Boll0cks the whole way thru..i have just sat and watched the 6.30 repeat and it was so apparent that Gatti was shot after about 30 seconds.. Gatti of 3 years ago would have ripped in so may quick combos ( remember his quick 1-2 then left hook underneath) and been out of the way..Boldomir right hand was so slow and telegraphed but he caught gatti loads...people were ducking in the third row when Gatti was hooking

Really really uncomfortable feeling watching that
SHAME

really hope they dont wheel him back out for one more farwell fight :(

Very sad indeed, the way he went out in the 9th and tried to get back up, sums him up pretty well, tremendous heart. Baldomir took some full blooded shots through out the fight too and they seemed to be just bouncing off, not a scratch on his face at the end.

Full credit to Baldomir, 2 good solid wins, each time going in as big underdog. His next fight looks likely to be PBF. That's a cracking resume within 3 fights. I'll be cheering on Baldomir.

I dont think baldomir has much of a chance against Mayweather , he will be out-boxed but he is a real threat to hatton and i fancy Baldomir could finish off what Collazo started and beat Hatton, maybe even stop him late on. Hatton just isnt strong enough at welterweight. Sad to see Gatti go out like that but his defence was so bad and i agree with many posters on here about Jim Watts crap commentating. I dont think there was one round Gatti won clearly and Baldomir for me was in a big lead going in to the 9th. I wonder how judges had it, im glad Baldomir stopped him though coz i was sensing a hometown decison coming though i maybe wrong. Baldomir has proved himself to be a solid champion who will take sone beating.

Exactly Baldomir is now a proven elite/semi-elite fighter, I think hes made to measure for PBF all the same. But not many can do what he did to Judah and Gatti

PBF is probably fighting Spinks for the 154 WBA title. I think Baldo-Hatton is next - bt the Ukral fight may be a prob. Probably Cotto-Baldo or Maybe Mosley-Baldomir or even DLH-Baldo....

He definitely should have. I was surprised to hear Gatti himself say afterwards he lost because of fatigue, as it appeared to me at the time that he just threw it away by recklessly mixing it for the crowds sake when he didn't need to. He seemed to have Baldomir under control with his boxing skills after some very rough moments earlier one, even showboating which you rarely see Gatti do unless he's very pleased with himself. Surely he could have kept that up, he was barely taking a punch before his careless leap into trouble. McGirt must have been absolutely furious with the outcome.

Mayweather v Baldomir would not be a fight to take seriously that's for sure.

Didn't see it sadly, but sounds to me like Gatti's legs went early and he just couldn't keep out of the way, forcing him to stand and trade with the stronger man.

If Gatti himself says he lost because of tiredness then you have to believe him I suppose. But it certainly didn't appear to me that he had to stand and trade at the point where he lost. Baldomir was not looking that fresh himself, was landing nothing and didn't look happy at all. Surely Gatti with all his experience could have completed another 4 rounds on the back foot considering how easily he was avoiding Baldomirs slow and predictable punches.

Having said all that I wouldn't have liked to have seen Gatti end up in another big fight against the likes of Margarito or Hatton. Hopefully this will be it.

My fear is that they might still try and make Gatti vs Hatton... or another final big fight for Arturo... the writing was on the wall early on when Gatti was getting hit flush so early... Baldomir was just too strong and fresh... Gatti should definately hang them up now...

The problem witht the Spinks fight is Cory wanted November, Floyd wanted February. Baldomir's camp is talking to Floyd starting today, and Carlos is obviously open in november. For him to fight Hatton, he'd have to wait almost a year from now. He's 35 and did enough waiting. Cotto-Baldomir won't get him much money, and Mosley isn't fighting until next year. Oscar said either Floyd or retirement, so that fight is out. The most logical choice is definitely Mayweather.

The welterweight division is turning into a pile of steaming shite. Floyd won't take on the best, he'd rather hammer Gatti, then fight a guy who lost to Baldomir, and now he'll try and fight Baldomir, what's the friggin' point? I hope if they do fight that Baldomir somehow pulls off the upset and beats him, because Floyd is just milking the sport dry now, and getting money for old rope. It's Roy Jones syndrome all over again, except that Jones did plenty in his early career and did enough at light heavy to at least make a strong argument for him being the dominant fighter in that division.

Since leaving the lower weights behind, all Floyd has done is belt hop and take on the weaker links to pick up those belts, a scandalous waste of his talent. I get the feeling that despite his immense talent, Floyd's greatest talent is making money for the least risk.

Gatti was at 140, so that's useless in proving your point. Judah was already signed and obviously not many cared he lost at it still sold 385,000 buys. What's wrong with fighting Carlos? The guy is the champ at 147, so you'd rather him fight someone else? margarito wouldn't help a PPV, Oscar is done until 2007 as is mosley, Hatton already turned it down to fight Urkal. Your statement he's milking the sport dry is pretty bullshit, as he's trying to get two of the biggest names in boxing over the past 10 years in the ring. I wouldn't exactly call that milking the sport, when PBF/DLH would possibly be the biggest fight in years.

Baldomir is a journeyman who should never have gotten a shot at Judah in the first place, and Gatti was a past it 140 lber who became a folk hero off the back of his first two fights against Ward. That Judah made a complete balls of it speaks volumes about his true worth as a fighter. Then Mayweather goes and fights Judah a fight that was a foregone conclusion. A fight with Baldomir is another foregone conclusion, barring some sort of miracle punch.

Why is Floyd continuing to move up the weights, one reason and one reason only, it's easier to cherry pick belts and choose your opponents if you do so.

The only reason Floyd wants Oscar is that it is the biggest payday out there by a long long way Oscar is the biggest money making machine in boxing history outside of Mike Tyson and Floyd knows that at an advancing age he has a good chance of beating him too.

Whatever happened to fighters clearing out their division. The welterweight division is a farce right now, and it doesn't look like getting better any time soon. I'm not saying that is all Floyd's fault, it isn't, it's the sanctioning bodies' fault for stripping baldomir when he fought Judah, no sooner are the belts unified then hey presto they are split again.

So now Floyd fights the man who beat the man he already beat, who beat the other guy he already beat in Judah....great.

Fair play to Carlos, I hope he gets well paid, but Mayweather v Baldomir only makes sense in the context of clearing up the mess with the belts, and you can bet it won't last long.

Margarito I cannot really comment too much on, I've only seen a couple of his fights, but he is at least a career long welterweight with a big punch who could at least theoretically give Mayweather trouble.

Baldmoir isnt a journeyman. Unbeaten in his last 20 fights during 8 years does not remind me of Peter Buckley somehow. Also Johnny Nelson has lost about 12 times, is he called a journeyman now i dont think so. I dont think Baldomir has got the credit he deserves. Ok i dont think he could beat mayweather but then i dont think anyone can right now, but baldomir would certainly give hatton and cotto a real fight.

Posted: 24 Jul 2006, 09:58
by jamesmcdonnell
Well, if you look at his past career, then up until very recently, he would have been called a journeyman. That's not saying he has no talent, it's just that he has a patchy career with quite a few losses to mediocre opponents. Of course, there could be any number of reasons for that

The fact remains that Baldomir had done absolutely JACK ALL to get a title shot against Judah, and in fact the only reason he got one was because he was seen as a perfect low-risk tune up opponent, which prompted Judah to probably take this piss in training and fight with complacency in his mind.

Prior to the Judah win, Baldomir hadn't been beaten since 1998, but it's not like he was turning back future hall of famers. He was performing agsint some decent enough names like Dingaan Thobela, Joshua Clottey, etc, but let's not kid ourselves that he was setting the world on fire. He wouldn't have been in anyone's top 20 before the fight let alone top 10 in the division.

His wins just show how inconsistent a performer Zab is at top level, and that Gatti is a guy who had the confidence knocked out of him by Mayweather, and who should have probably retired after the three Ward fights were done. I fancied Baldomir to turn Gatti over, as he's the natural at the weight, but I doubt he would do well against Cotto, Hatton, Mayweather or Margarito or any other number of the big names at 140-147.

I don't think anyone wants to put Baldomir on a pedestal. hmm...maybe Baldo vs the all time greats would make a good thread, lol...but he at least should get some credit for beating judah and gatti. he won't last long as he's too slow, looks to be having weight problems, but he's risen to the occasion twice and deserves credit for his success - while it lasts.

Anyone else think that Baldomir looks like and Argentinian Sam Allardyce?

Benicio Del Torro could play Gatti in a movie of his life as well.;
