McDonnell still in denial – ‘Danny was in great condition’

From seconds out.
Both Williams and McDonnell have come under heavy fire since that night in Cardiff, but Jimmy Mac denies that his skill as a trainer and conditioner are now in question.
He said: "Let me just hit back at the criticism for a minute. First, let's give Danny praise for giving Skelton the rematch after nearly knocking him out in February. Danny didn't need the rematch but gave it to him, so let's hope Skelton will now give Danny a rematch. Danny beat Danny, Skelton had nothing to do with it. Skelton had a game plan and performed well, he nicked points here and there without engaging. Danny is the better fighter, everyone knows that.
McDonnell denies he and Williams let themselves down by coming in out of shape.
"Danny couldn't have worked any harder in the gym, sparred any more rounds or pushed himself any harder. He was in great condition, as funny as that may sound, but then I started taking sports supplement drinks in the last two, three weeks of camp any put on over two stone (28lbs). People think we didn't train hard, but that's just not true. All the damage was done in the last two weeks before the fight after a great camp.
"Danny started taking advise from other people and knocking back all these protein and Creatine shakes. He's a grown man, he checks his own weight and it isn't like heavyweights have to make weight so I wasn't paying close attention to his weight. That's my fault and I have to take the blame for that.
"But everyone knows that Matt Skelton isn't any where near the fighter Danny Williams is and if Danny hasn't have put that weight on he'd have caught Skelton and knocked him out."

What a load of old Bo**ocks
A trainer's job is to prepare his fighter so he is in the BESTSHAPE to win a fight both in terms of conditioning and skill
If Jmc thinks looking after a fighter's weight is not part of that he should get the F*ck out of the game and he is likely to put a fighter in danger at some point

You cannot add 2 stone in just 2 weeks by drinking creatine or protein shakes, absolute bollocks yet again.
This guy has become an absolute joke I am afraid.

I'm more depressed at the thought of them getting it on for a third time, which seems highly likely.
In reference to Jim, he had already lost all credibility in my book, and I suspect a few more will feel the same way after reading waffle like that.

What sort of relationship can there be between coach and fighter if the fighter decides to whack back loads of creatine and protein shakes in the run in to the fight. Either Danny has no respect for his trainer or this is all utter shite.
As said, if McDonnell doesn't think Danny's weight is an issue, then he's not much of a trainer, I know shite all about physical conditioning, but it's pretty obvious that a big part of boxing is about mobility, and coming in weighing as much as a bungalow is hardly conducive to being able to move.
How many times have we heard the old 'Danny beat Danny' line now? I'm pretty sick of Williams, it's a real wind up watching him eat himself into obscurity, there's been some notable highs, but too many self induced lows.
Fair play to Williams for giving Skelton a rematch, but it's no good just turning up like a huge slab of beef and turning in a piss poor performance.

Here Here everybody.
And lets get it straight.... it seems like from articles I have read and quotes from the camp that they saw his first fight with Skelton as practically the "perfect" performance.
Nope, he was shit there aswell, just not quite as bad as last time.
His last impressive performance IMO came against Keith Long..... That version of Williams could have been a geniune contender (IMO).... everything since he has either looked fat or decidely vulnerable (sometime both).

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate for a minute, not simply to be awkward.
His performance showed him up to be one-dimensional and lumbering. But who on earth could have predicted Skelton would try and box and use speed?! Danny thought he was going to be involved in an ugly close-quarters brawl.
I didn't think he looked fat...he looked like he'd bulked up, looked very heavy in the muscle dept - arms looked very big indeed.
He prepared for one kind of fight - a wrestling match - and was given another.

Have no fear James I have no doubt that Danny will return, work really hard in the gym and his oxygen tank, look expolosive and

Quite accurate, but there were times especially late on in the fight that Skelton wasn't doing much - but Williams could only throw one punch before holding. Why wasn't he pumping his hands when in range.
I'm not sure how they scored it but apparently BM had Williams WINNING the rematch, whilst I don't agree (but scored it a draw) it still shows that Williams was given the opportunity to fight in close on a number of occasions but looked spend.

I see your point Ian, and indeed, I didn't think Williams looked fat, in fact he looked in far better shape than he did for the Audley fight, but he was carrying way too much weight for a professional fighter. He looked like he had been lifting massive amounts of weights. The trouble is, this kind of build is not suited to aerobic exercise, and there is no way that Mcdonnell wouldn't know this.
All that muscle tissue is very heavy in oxygen demand, and thus very muscular fighters tend to fatigue. Now maybe they thought they could get to Skelton early, but being massively bulked up wasn't going to aid this. When Danny did land, the punches looked slow and not very potent, and he was completely unable to put any combinations together.
Fair play to Skelton, he boxed a clever fight, but there is no way on earth Skelton should have been able to outbox Williams, and had Williams come in in proper fighting shape, I don't believe he would have been able to.
If danny had come in at 255 or around there, nice and lean and mobile, I think he would have gotten to Skelton and spattered him.

You may well be right but surely an experienced fighter like Williams with an experirnced cornerman like Jimmy Mac could have adapted their tactics mid-fight?
Or is that too much to ask from a fighter who claims he is World class?

Williams isn't and never has been world class even when he was in some sort of shape. Lets not forget he failed miserably fighting for the European title.

I agree with you - as James points out, he seemed too muscle-laden to be able to get on his toes and box a bit. He isn't world class, as you well know - though it really depends what is meant by 'world class'. Top 50? Probably? Top 10? Nope.

Just been reading an article about Carl Baker on Britishboxing.net, he was saying how he's shifted a bit of weight and now weighs just over 20 stone, so its's official, Danny Williams is now Britains heaviest boxer!!.

Oh god please, spare me the cobblers about hitting tyres. You don't come in at over 20 stone from hitting bloody tyres. Danny must have been lifting weights and doing loads of strength training, as well as not shifting the excessive fat he carries anyway. He basically was overweight from overeating, and then added loads more muscle mass on top of that.
In that shape I doubt he would have beaten Skelton, because he hardly threw any punches in the second fight, and it was only late in the 1st fight that he got to Matt and even then barely nicked a decision.

Its a piss poor effort at trying to put a spin on a diabolical episode for both fighter and trainer.
Rather than ask for credit for offering Skelton the rematch, Danny & Jim should get down on their knees and start thanking a few people; allegedly for the last few paydays, the thousands of boxing fans who turned up in Cardiff, parting with their hard earned dosh, only to see Williams turn up hopelessly out of shape and overweight. And while they're at it, they might want to thank ITV too.
I don't have much time for Warren and I know that Williams is just a commodity to him, but Danny let down EVERYONE.
If Skelton decides to go in another direction, Danny only has himself to blame. What an idiot.

Aye, I believe him Wilse but until The Bakerman gets in the ring under 20, he's still got the title for me! He was 22st for his last outing!
What was quite funny was when I went to see him at Kirkby in Ashfield. The weight was announced as 20st. I thought this was quite good...but a bit of investigating told me that the scales only went up to 20!

Mcdonnell loses yet more credibility with these statements.... his stock as a trainer has really fallen.

Exactly. He didnt emphatically prove it where it counts - in the ring.

It sounds like Jim is embarrassed at the fact that he cannot impose any authority on Danny & get him to train properly.
It is simply ludicrous that a man of 6ft 1ins should be coming in at 20 stones + (283lbs +).
I thought that the Brontosaurus died over 70 million years ago, until I saw Danny Williams on the scales!

McDonnell comes across as more a fitness advisor then a trainer in that excert.
Why wasnt he monitoring what Danny put into his body??
Why didnt he have him on the scales?
