I'm almost certain this fight was legitimate. LaMotta's wins were pretty much always real, and I don't remember hearing about Satterfield ever doing 'business'. Satterfield was a murderous puncher, but he could be outboxed and he had a very suspect chin. Jake simply outboxed, out-thought, then stopped him. He was a better all-around fighter than Bob.[/i]

there's no question about this fight being legit. LaMotta said Satterfield hit him harder than anybody but Jake was strong, bulled Satterfield around, Satterfield tired, as he always did, and Jake finished him. Trivia note: though the Chicago Cubs first night game a few years ago was supposed to be the first time lights were on in Wrigley Field, this fight took place there and temporary lights were put up just for it.

I would never have guessed this could possibly be the outcome based on the weight difference.
Impressive to say the least.

Satterfield was known for coming out extremely aggressive and usually knocking out his man or gassing and getting stopped himself. Against a top fighter with one of the best chins in boxing history, it's really not a surprise that Lamotta was able to break him down and stop him.

Because he was a much better fighter?

Simple, the rub with Satterfield was if you could survive the first few rounds against him, you had a solid chance of beating him----and by knockout. Satterfield after those first few rounds was gassed out, and his chin wasn't exactly made out of stone either, more like fiberglass. His offense was so great though, that this weakness was seldom ever exploited. He picked the wrong guy to tangle with in LaMotta though, he could take and take and take and take, and knock you out in the last few seconds of the very last round. It was legitimite.
What's more impressive to me isn't that he beat Satterfield, but that he was stopped by Bob Murphy. Which goes to show you just how damned strong a puncher Irish Bob was. I will have to say though, this is THE first time I ever heard of anyone ever questioning whether any of LaMotta's fights (other than THE ONE DIVE HE ADMITTED TAKING to Billy Fox). LaMotta was always on the level, feared no one, etc. and people often times forget, he did alot of his fights at 175-limit cus there was no super middleweight division then; LaMotta only did his most important fights at 160, otherwise he was fighting light heavyweight.

What weight difference?
LaMotta was hurt/staggered at least twice during the bout, but Satterfield wasn't good enough to follow it up.

I imagined Satterfield as at or near HW, and Lamotta MW. Not sure what they weighed in at fight. Just seemed enough to make Jake's challenge a bit steep. But obviously not.
And I assume they would have both been in shape and fairly steeled. Unlike a Toney/Peter affair.

Both weighed less than 168 pounds.

It was a light heavyweight fight. Mind you, Satterfield was a light heavyweight for a long time before going to the heavyweight division. There was no middle ground anywhere, 161-175 was considered light heavyweight then. LaMotta, despite popular opinion, did the bulk of his career as a light heavyweight, though he's remembered as one of the all time great middleweights.

Satterfield had a pretty nice height advantage, but no weight advantage. In fact, according to Boxrec, LaMotta outweighed him by about 3 pounds. Satterfield was a massive puncher, but LaMotta had the chin and grit to take his best and keep on rolling. Satterfield lacked those things, and when it showed that Jake wasn't going anywhere, he crumbled, as per usual.
As for Irish Bob, it's safe to say that Jake was quite a ways past his best by the time of that bout (and he even managed to take the rematch), and even then it's not like he was KO'd flat or anything like that.

Thanks. Where are these details from? I only have the next day Chicago Tribune and three wires (AP, UP, INS).

.....whenever he was asked about punchers he faced he always said bob satterfield. he'd then point to the top of his head and say "satterfield actually put bumps on my head."

Jaclem, last time you commented on this thread was about 11 years ago.
That puts you in your mid twenties bu now according to my math.
Hope you've learned a bit about boxing since then.
