Valero - Mosquera would be a much more interesting fight. I don't even know if I can be bothered with Forrest-Quartey.....

I scored it 97-96 for Quartey. Never before have I seen a fight with so many even rounds. Forrest was fighting a lot like Antonion Tarver - circling and firing in short, fast bursts or arm punches that look flashy but don't really have much in them.
Here is my card:
Forrest - Quartey
--10----------9--
--9-----------10-
--9-----------10-
--10----------10-
--9-----------10-
--10----------10-
--10----------9--
--10----------10-
--9------------9--
--10----------10-
A LOT of even rounds, obviously, but that's how I saw the fight. If a round is even then that's how I'm scoring it; I'm not going to pick some arbitrary winner of the round for the sake of it.
Anyway, decent fight, but I would rather have seen Valero vs. Mosquera..

Yes, reading the round by round of Valero/Masquera, it seemed like an action packed possible FOTY candidate, but I just can't get my hands on it. It's not on WBVA, Youtube nor ebay. If anyone has Valero/Mosquera please gimme a shout, or post it on net somewhere. :)
I also had Quartey winning, by 2 rounds & with the point deduction I thought it was a sure win.

Close-ish fight but how on earth can anyone give that to Forrest with that point deduction? Not a blatant robbery but a disgraceful decison all the same. Forrest did nothing at all in the second half of the fight!

I think Ike won it - only just. Forrest put so little authority into his work. Quartey started very well, landing clean jabs and winning most of the early stages. But how you score it depends on how much you value Forrest's late work. He did some neat boxing, and closed the points gap. But - let's forget there was a point deduction - I had Ike winning the last round. Forrest's more varied attacks were mostly muffled, whereas Quartey was landing jabs straight into his face.
So, minus the deduction, I had it Quartey by one. If Forrest would've put more quality in his work, I would've had it even. Too close to be a robbery.
Quartey is a very classy jabber. But he always lets up and lets the opponent back in. Forrest, for me, just couldn't find the right balance of workrate and accuracy/quality. He looked happy just to be there, whereas Quartey was excellent in places but got complacent.
Ultimately, i've enjoyed Ike's comeback. But if he wants to be a championship level boxer again, he needs to be able to go 12 hard rounds. That fight should've been a 12 rounder and then we wouldn've known more.

Terence wrote:Ike has been wonderful, his legs are gone though. At times he looked rubbery merely walking forwards. Forrest switching to the body was a smart tactical mood.
His footwork has never been much good. What a jab though!

he's probably better than he looked. forrest is tall, skilled and a solid all rounder. imo quartey beat him. he was able to outjab the man with the longer, supposedly better jab. he definitely used up a lot of energy getting himself in range to jab.
quartey used to be a beast. the ike who made 7 welterweight defenses and schooled de la hoya for the bulk of their fight was an excellent champ.
he seemed to have some kind of beef with azumah nelson. nelson felt that quartey had turned into a snob and forgot about his humble roots. there is an aloofness in ike's style - he'll box brilliantly, then assume he's won the fight when he's only half way through.
without those lapses, the judges wouldn't have had any excuse to give it to de la hoya. circumstances behind that fight, obviously, were similar to dlh-sturm, when dlh also won dubiously. quartey paved the way for a mega event with trinidad. sturm paved the way for a mega event with hopkins.

Quartey should now have wins against De Le Hoya and Forrest on his leger, imo, which in turn should have put him very close to the HoF. I haven't seen the Vargas fight so I can't comment on that, but even if he did lose it was only narrowly. He's not a complete fighter by any means but his jab is a thing of beauty and he is a legitimate elite level fighter.

It was quite close, the Vargas fight. Competitive but not controversial. Vargas was just bigger and sharper. But it was a hard night for Vargas, and I will say this: he never looked the same after fighting Quartey and Winky.

That's because two fights after beating Quartey he was mauled by Felix Trinidad.

I know the Tito fight ruined him. But I think he suffered from the tough schedule of those fights also, which might have jaded him before that. Vargas didn't exactly come out of those fights unscathed. The fights with Quartey and Wright were punishing ones, in close succession, especially for such a young fighter.

Agreed Vargas took several tough fights in a row and it cost him, of course the fact Trinidad hit like a bull didn't help either, that fight near shot Vargas who always struggled after getting knocked down five times. As for Vargas-Quartey, close and no controversy for me.
Not seen Forrest-Quartey as yet but looking forward to watching it soon, can either man get back to the level they were once at?

I had it 97-94 or 96-93 to Forrest , can't remember which. I saw almost exactly the same fight as the judge who scored to 93-93 to Forrest. Another case of turning the volume off seconds into the fight due to the increasingly annoying Jim Watt. Yet again I disagree with his card.
Ike's a bad sport and would make anything seem like a robbery becuase he's arrogant. He's had four close fights with Lopez,De La Hoya, Vargas and now Forrest and each time he cries foul. No one of these decisions was bad at all. Just a sore loser who thinks he has to turn up and collect a points win. He doesn't pump out enough combinations out and this has back fired on him, especially agaisnt Vargas and Forrest.
Both can still be a force on the world scene. Forrest showed he's still got plenty to offer, and losing to the world class Vernon definitely doesn't mean it's time for Ike to call it quits.
A big thumbs up to SkySports for ending the season in style.

All I can say is your criteria for judging rounds is a strange one, and watch the fight again. The decision against Oscar was a bad one. Quartey had much more class than Forrest.

Here you go buddy..
Scoring criteria
The scoring shall be done on a TEN POINT must system. Judges are to score each round using the following scoring criteria:
1. Clean punching (power versus quantity).
2. Effective aggressiveness.
3. Ring generalship.
4. Defense.
Your welcome

Yep lvlarc_UK, seen the fight twice. First time on my own, then again with a friend who also scored for Forrest (but only by a point, due to the 1 point deduction). I scored Forrect both times. Quartey's variety was poor in comparison to Forrest and plodded after him round after round without cutting the ring off effectively. Ike's jab was harder but Forrest's combinations often left him scoring the last punch in several rounds.
Not that it would bother me had I disagreed with the judges becuase scoring is all subjective, but it's you who is out of line with all three judges and from what I understand, most of the press row who were at the fight, so I suggest YOU have a second viewing.
Terrence, anyone who scored that fight 9-1 to Quartey isn't even worth getting into a debate with.

Definately thought Quartey won personally, but it was close but cannot see 6 rounds for Forrest.

Most of the press row didn't have Forrest winning at all, that's nonsense.
Almost every site I checked, fightnews, boxingtalk, ESPN all reported the fight as very controversial, Dan Rafael thought it was a gift to Forrest. 90% of the arena, fightnews sportswriter claimed robbery. HBO had Quartey clear winner and also was disgusted. Theres also a pro judge that posts on currentscene that had it for Quartey, most of boxrec did, clearly the majority had Quartey a winner.
Quartey was clearly the stronger, aggressor of the two. His punching was cleaner, his jab was just as solid as Forrests sloppy arm punches. I reckon Quartey will gain more from that "loss" than Forrest will for that "win" I wouldn't cry robbery, but for me Quartey was the better that night.

Ok, maybe a weak source (or maybe not) but Boxing News' reporter went on record as saying most of the press row had Forrest a winner.
In the three fights with De La Hoya, Vargas and Forrest, Ike has tried each time to gain from his loss by being a foul sport. He simply has a serious problem accepting the judges decision.....as do you. So basically it's your problem.
