Danny Williams has pulled out of his British heavyweight challenge to Welshman Scott Gammer, scheduled for the Afan Lido on October 13.

But promoter Paul Boyce, who shocked the fight game when he outbid allegedly for the right to stage the fight, will go ahead with the show, featuring Gammer in a voluntary defence against Londoner Micky Steeds.

Former holder Williams, a practising Muslim, has withdrawn because the date coincides with Ramadan, claiming that the obligatory dawn-to-dusk fast means he would not be in a fit condition to box.

'Because that constitutes a medical reason, the Board have accepted it,' says Boyce. 'But it means that I still keep the right to stage his fight with Gammer whenever it takes place.

'Meanwhile, they've agreed that Scott can face Steeds on the October date.'

What's tougher for Danny, staying off the cakes for 24 hours or fighting Scott?

Well most of us suspected Danny Williams would pull out of this fight for one reason or another anyway.

Gammer vs Steeds should make for a better fight. I woulder if it will get TV coverage now?

not knowing, is Ramadan the between the same dates each year?

if so then surley Williams should always say he is out between these date with plenty of notice, so we don't go through the same thing every year

I think the month of Ramadan is always Octbober, starts when the full moon appears or something to do with the moons cycle.

The fasting should do Danny good, needs to lose some weight anway!

He was training for Vitali during Ramadan though in 2004?

He could not give up the kipling cakes in time!! Danny should retire unless he can get into proper shape.
he got no chance of winning european title. Virchics is champ very beatable at mo Warren should put Skelton in there.

Ramadan always takes place during the month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calender. However, the Islamic calender is a lunar calender, which is about 11 or 12 days shorter than the solar calender year, so the actual dates vary every year.

Its only fasting in daylight hours. When the sun goes down he can eat as much as he likes. Though at least we'll get a hungry Danny Williams again.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy Danny's reasoning. I've heard of Muslim fighters boxing before during Ramadan. I also know loads of Muslims who work during it as well. Why should Danny be so special?

kebab shops do their best trade in the hours after dark...the big fellar won't miss out on any of his grub, dont worry about that!

It's only been for about the last three years that Williams has let his weight and physical condition get out of control. Before that most of his problems appeared tp be psychological eg lack of confidence etc.

I have sometimes wondered wether Williams turns up heavy and 'out of shape' so after the fight he can tell himself that he lost because of the weight and next time he will train harder etc and not because he wasn't good enough.

Steeds lost his 0 to Gammer in Brighton a few years back. It was a good scrap. Over 12 rounds this should be really good. Steeds is a solid scrapper ...hes a british version of jason Gavern... short and tough... but Gammer has the edge in fitness/punch power/experience.

Gammer is really decent ..and has a wealth of exciting fights in front of him...he may hav to sell his soul to the devil to get the big ones.... but his career has gone fairly slowly with way too many 4 and 6 round fights.....a sad state of affairs in poverty stricken british boxing atm

however hes here now and is at the right age physically to dominate over the fading vets such as skelton/ williams/ and sprott

I'd love to see Gammer pushing on to greater things. his career seems to have progressed slowly, he is already 29. He could be decent at European level. I'd back him to do the double over Steeds.
