Excellent footage!
This version of Charles was slightly past his prime and fighting above his best weight, yet he was the top heavyweight around.

Three things one should notice:

1. Charles was almost always the smaller man when he fought at heavywight.
2. Notice his excellent sense of timing in those KO's.
3. Charles could fight effectively when moving both backwards and forward. Not too many fighters are able to do this.

What a great, great fighter!
Someone please write a book on Ezzard Charles!

Nice one. . . . Charles' left hook seems similar to Sugar Ray Robinson's. That knockdown of Layne was brutal but you've got to give it to Rex for getting up.

Anyone seen the Harold Johnson fight? I have to do my homework on some of these guys.

Charles had fantastic skills.
His lefthook straight right hand combo was devastation.
Also I like how he stepped around Jersey Joe after a flurry to nail him with the lefthook.
Ezzard was an educated fighter.

One thing about Charles was that he was not a flashy fighter. He didn't put on a jabbing show like Holmes or flurry like Ray Leonard or Jones Jr. But he knew when to hit you, where to hit you, how to pace himself, and set you up for the knockout. As was said about Jack Johnson, he could embarass an opponent without looking unstoppable himself.

However, his left hook-right hand combo was damn pretty . . .
