Alphonse Halimi vs Mario d'Agata

This was one of the earliest fight I ever saw. As it was, I saw it live on television.

While the result of the main fight is available to anyone with even a passing interest in boxing, I am trying to find out the names of the fighters who took part in the main prelim.

They were a black fighter and a white one. Before the bout started, the television announcer on commenting the two boxers, stated that he could not see the white man last terribly long.

As it was, the black fighter stopped his foe in the fist round. For some fifty years I have been trying to who the two boxers were. Perhaps someone with a good memory or an old record book may be able to enlighten me.

If you look up the fighter's record via "name search" and then click on the "date" link (on the left hand side of the line relating to the fight) that takes you to a page that lists all the fights that took place on that day. You'll see the fights from the Halimi-DA'gata bill listed if you scrool down link

Can't say I can recognise the fighters you are looking for though....perhaps the full bill isn't listed? Anyway, hope this helps....

Thank you so much for your suggestion John. You get 10 points for clear thinking and you go to the top of the class.

The fighter in question was Seraphin Ferrer, a big name in European boxing half a century ago. I had forgotten his name, as at the time I was only a little nipper, but looking at his record, he fought the likes of Duilio Loi, Bruno Visintin, Saveur Chiocca, Emilio Marconi... The list goes on and on. I see he died relatively young at the age of 69.

I must use this system of research to relive that period of Europen Boxing. Where has time gone?

Glad you found him! I remember him - vaguely - from when I was a young lad reading Ring Magazine. He had a good record.
