can anyone recommend some good anti spy/surveillance software? preferably free & preferably very good

Ewido anti-spyware, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard are also well worth getting.

Also what firewall do you have? The Windows XP one is pretty pants so best thing is to turn it off and use a different one instead. I use Kerio Firewall which is excellent.

when i got my PC last year, I got some Norton Internet security, ani virus eytc software on discount. Ghost I think it is. That has firewall etc, but I hear it can have a 'leaky defence'

Also retart you computer in Safe Mode and run all your anti virus, spyware programs to give your PC a good clean out,

haven't got any crap on my pc, & haven't done anything dodgy, it's just that i get the feeling i'm being watched. i don't like the idea of google and yahoo collecting personal information as i find it intrusive and monomaniacal and feel the right to be adequately defended against it. also, all these stories you hear of hackers who are able to get personal information like credit card details etc

Also could try Windows Defender (Beta) from Microsoft, you can also get your updates for windows from there.

It is worth "investing" in a good named multi purpose defence system such as Norton Works, one that includes antivirus, antispam, adblocking, and firewalls. You may have friends who can help you with this issue as they can cost quite a bit c.£50 !!

Also do yourself a favour and download Mozilla Firefox and use it instead of Internet Explorer. It is miles better.

You can open up tabbed browsing windows within the one browser window instead of multiple windows with internet explorer.

And it doesn't have the same security loopholes which enable all this spyware and ads to get on your PC like it can with internet explorer.
