So Where Will Calzaghe Fit Into This

given that some feel Johnson won, will Warren make an offer for Calzaghe-Johnson anyway?
Instead of the difficulty of rival promoters and TV, will Calzaghe go for the more important fight - Kessler-Beyer winner?

If it happens i think Calzage will 120-108 Woods with ease or even stop him, Woods freezes when gettin caught sometimes, something he can not afford to do against a non stop combination puncher. Thats my opinion anyway 8)

i wouldn't rule out calzaghe-johnson.
kessler's promoter and warren don't see eye to eye on things regarding that fight.
and kessler with 2 titles is gonna give mogens palle even more reason to demand a bigger share.
johnson will take what he's given and is a name american tv will accept.

Calzaghe would easily beat Johnson.
He'd see those punches that Johnson throws coming as Woods should of at times.

calzaghe would crucify johnson.

On last nights showing, Johnson would not go the distance against Calzaghe.
He looked an old man by the end of the ninth and with the pace that Calzaghe sets I'd be very surprised if this didn't turn out to be a stoppage in the mid to later rounds.

I disagree & think that both bigger men would give calzaghe plenty to think about. Just cos they looked tired in a brutal war that featured loads of solid punches, doesn't mean they are gassing substandard nobodies. they both put it all on the line.
when Adamek and briggs are battered and bleeding next month, what will be said, that they are too vulnerable? my guess is that those younger guys won't be fighting in the same temperature as Woods-Johnson III.
some ppl's logic is mad.

This match will be announced, but despite his fantastic performance earlier this year, Calazaghe will pull out because of a cold or something.

Johnson may give Calzaghe something to think about in the early rounds, but he has serious stamina issues. He showed this against Tarver and against Hall apparently (although I didn't see this fight). He likes to fight on the front foot and boss the fight, but Calzaghe IMO would do the same thing to Johnson as he did to Lacy, peppering him with combinations and showing plenty of lateral movement. Johnson will get tired and Calzaghe will take advantage of Johnson's diminishing stamina reserves.
Not trying to denigrate either of these 2 fighters, as they fought a hard genuine fight. But Johnson looked like an old worn out fighter after the ninth and Woods, whilst having a big heart and lots of courage, is a very limited fighter IMO.
PS. Trying to make an argument based on a fight that hasn't happened yet, and double guessing what people will say, as a comparison with a fight that happened last night is what I call logic gone mad.

to be honest, Johnson ALWAYS looked tired fighting Woods in the first two fights. used a lot of energy going after him and pushing back/outslugging a naturally bigger man. the 2nd fight, where Cuellar made Johnson work and work and work, had Glen very tired. This time Clinton engaged him far more, which contributed to a fade. Woods is a strong bloke.
Calzaghe, I believe, would end up being much too fast for Johnson. Too much in reserve. The way a very tired Woods could hit and then move his very big body out of the way in round 10 or 11 convinces me that calzaghe would throw a burst & get out the way and reset & do it all over again to baffle Glen. But Glen is class and he can show JC a few things.
Glen wasn't gassed vs Hall. He counter punhced his arse off all night with Toney style slip and right hand counters. Glen was hitting harder in this fight & using better punching technique.
As to my Adamek-Briggs II comment, all I'm doing is illustrating that their first fight was fought at the same pace and intensity as Woods-Johnson III. Both awesome battles. Adamek & Briggs weren't as knackered, as they are younger. All 4 fighters were impaired - Adamek broken nose pre fight, Briggs terrible cut rd 2, Woods & Johnson in apparently horrible heat
Briggs fought quite similar to Johnson. Loading up on the single right hands. You wonder about Pauls' pace though. He's really been through it with the drugs and he peaked as a fighter when he was about 18 in the thai boxing. Got varicose veins as well (hence why he can't kick anymore). Probably was the 'Mosley Power Boxing', too much powe,r not enough punching
Looks like JC is going for Woods. Fair enugh. I like both fighters and think Woods can test him.

Anyone think Woods could move up and maybe Calzaghe vs Johnson for the vacant title?
Bell, Mormeck etc would probably be as big a fight for Woods stateside than Joe.

I think that you already may be in agreement with my original post about Calzaghe/Johnson. But you replied with definitive doubt. As to a Calzaghe/Woods fight I feel this one would give Calzaghe a few more things to think about. But the outcome would be, for me, a comprehensive win for Calzaghe on points, in a relatively unexciting affair. Something about styles and fights and what makes them. I am sure I was told that many moons ago.

Neither guy convinced me last night. Johnson and Woods both disqualify for a potential "superfight".

I agree wholeheartedly. Calzaghe, even alowing for the extra 7 pounds, is a league above Woods and Johnson in terms of ability.
I think, and this is just a guess here, that pundit would agree with me when I say that Calzaghe should be looking at fighting the winner of Kessler-Beyer before stepping up to 175lb's. All four belts at supermiddleweight is as big a fight, indeed almost certainly a bigger fight than taking on either Woods or Johnson. Kessler (who I expect will beat Beyer) may not be a huge name. But he's an unbeaten champion. Woods and Johnson put on a terrific show, but they also showed their own limitations.

what i mean is, Johnson would give him some touble and would cath him now & again with those sneaky rights, & his strength would surprise JC. But JC's speed/variety would eventually get him to take over.
Probably, Calzaghe would brutalise him Hopkins style. As you can probably tell, the more I think about it, the more I see Calzaghe getting him.
PS, does anyone think the top of Johnson's head looks like a walnut?

I'm disagreeing with most here, because I think they both fought so hard that they made each other look vulnerable. They went to war far too early than was good for them.
Calzaghe said "it was like watching one of my fights in slow motion, I'd beat both of them on the same night." lol
Adamek & Briggs would be 1/2 a notch up, difference being they are fresher.
However, difference is that there is a big clamour in the UK now for Woods-Calzaghe. I don't know how many millions watched Woods edge that great fight. From what I hear, Warren, Calzaghe, Woods & Hobson are all prepared to make an effort. Major point is, there is a market for Cazaghe-Woods.
In spite of this, there are roadblocks. Woods said he wants 50-50 pay, being that he's champ. Warren & Hobson are enemies, and would Hobson ALLOW Woods to fight on a Warren promotion again? Warren did Woods no favors on Sat.
Above all, Johnson is clamouring for a rematch. Due to the closeness of it, the IBF could mandate this.
If so, Calzaghe can kiss goodbye to his title shot. Woods, I'm sure, would happily face Jonson again in another grudge match. Probably on a PPV show in Sheffield with a Hatton fight in America.

Mormeck would go right through woods, far too big and powerful, total and utter mistmatch. Woods is not strong or hard hitting enough, most of the guys at cruiserweight walk around at about 220.

Right now, if Calzaghe fights anyone except Kessler/Beyer, it's the wrong fight. Neither Johnson nor woods looked good, and neither would even trouble him at 175. As I said a week ago, neither fight would do anything for his career because both looked so-so in a very close contest. Way too many punches were landing on both guys.

Woods said he wants 50-50 pay
The Sports Network boss sounded like pay parity was the furthest thing from his mind in his interview with Jim Rosenthal after the fight.

You are of course right from a very objective point of view. However, I could understand it if he would like to meet Woods - because of all the national hype there could come out of it. Perhaps kind of like when Mayweather and Judah fought eachother not minding that it was far from the fight that made sense at the time. The fact that both were americans made the fight happen.
And apart from that, I am happy that woods won in the sense that Johnson would have been perfect for Calzaghe and it would have been another "impressive beatdown" from Joe. Woods, I think, has a style less suited to Joe, although Joe is probably still the favorite.

It is a good fight. Heck, when I saw Woods-Hoye I felt it would be a perfect fight. Now that Woods beat Johnson - with 3.3m viewers watching, and a crowd who got their money's worth - there is a market for Calzaghe-Woods.
Before, they wanted to tap into American markets. I doubt Wright or Taylor would be brave/stupid enough to move up. Plus they will fight EACH OTHER again, almost certainly. So that would've been the Contender guy or Allan Green. Which would've been something to complain about.
Clearly, there are other lucrative markets than America. Though the best would be Kessler-Beyer winner.
Not an easy fight for Joe. He'll have to chase Woods down which is hard vs a bigger man. Obviously, Woods won't be fast enough to get out of the way. But it will be a struggle and a worthy fight. One of the reasons Glen was tired was down to Clinton's physical strength.
Posted: 05 Sep 2006, 07:41
by jamesmcdonnell
Clinton is basically physically a bigger version of calzaghe. Not very muscular, but a big boned lad. The weight difference come fight night could be quite significant. Clinton has to work hard to make 175 apparently, so reckon he'll have quite an edge in physical strength. He'd be a smart man to try and close in on joe and grapple with him.
Think Joe will have too much mobility and handspeed, though don't see him stopping woods at all.
