Sam Peter - now the WBC heavyweight champ in waiting ?

His win over Toney, controversial or not, was in a WBC eliminator and you can bet his camp will move heaven & earth to get him in with Oleg Maskaev before anybody else beats them to it; Peter certainly has his limitations but does anybody else agree that he's now basically the WBC champ in waiting ?

He is physically strong, a big puncher, able to go 12 rounds, with a good chin. Maskaev deserves credit for beating Rahman but I can't see him beating Peter.

I think Maskaev has got a decent chance, Peter is not that great.

I give Maskaev a chance too. Peter is slow and sloppy, and although Maskaev is no great stylist he does have the skills to out-box the Nigerian if he can avoid getting clocked.

I agree that Maskaev has the better technical skills but I don't think he'd be able to avoid Peter's haymakers for 12 rounds. Oleg is definitely enjoying an indian summer, and good luck to him, on the night I expect Peter to blast him out of there pretty impressively.

Lets hope we get some UK coverage, whatever the outcome :D

I've sadly not seen it yet, but to me it sounds like he was pretty soundly outboxed by Toney for most of the fights and took a lot of punishment as well. Toney isn't really a hitter at heavyweight, but sounds like he busted Peter up pretty good, and was lucky to get the decision. Peter is never going to amount to much, Maskaev is our era's James Braddock, but Peter sure as hell ain't Jou Louis.

Peter is poor, but I think he will land one and Maskaev won't get up. Maskaev will be winning at the time of the stoppage though.

Maskaev can crumble at any time, hes proved that in the past nothing is certain with him, i'll go for Peter on this, Maskaev has had trouble against Peter style opponents in the past

Good fight, I'd like to see it. Still think Peter is basically very average, with wildly overrated power, but I'd certainly give him a shot at beating Maskaev.

Mind you, If I had to put money on a winner, it'd be Maskaev. Of course, given my recent betting history, that makes the fight a sure-fire win for Peter........ Still, as Mills Lane used to say: 'Let's get it on!!'

Just watched it and Toney was robbed!

116 - 112 or maybe 111 I thought to Toney.

How could the judges score Peter's back of the head and liver punches and pushing Toney back with one arm then hitting with the other.

Peter was hit very clean.

I hope Maskkaev unifies with Vlad first, and then Vlad will school Peter again.

Or Peter winning the WBC belt and fighting Wlad again. :TU:

Was right though, Toney schooled Peter better than Wlad did. :box:

There was nothing wrong with those shots to the back of Toney's head, it was Toney's fault for turning away and putting his head down low all the time, he expected he could evade Peter's shots like that, but Peter wasn't having any of it.

Although I scored a Toney victory (115-113) several of the rounds could have gone either way...rounds 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9 (point deduction). Even the 10th and 11th were close so to say I disagree with your scores Max would be wrong. However judging by how many close rounds there were you can see how it is possible to score for Peter. Toney was warned by Raul Caiz that when he bends to avoid shots it is his fault if he gets caught on the back of the head. Peter actually boxed the best Ive seen him so far. He landed several good RHs and body shots.

if your version of schooling is hitting the deck and falling about the ring and just making it to the final bell aftert looking shit scared half the fight whenever a punch was thrown by your opponent, you are even more biased than your posts suggest.

Yes he outboxed Peter but it was no shcooling.

Lennox lewis schooled Tua, Vlad did not school peter.

Hmmmm.... round 12 looks like a pretty bad schooling.

Either way?

Peter only won rounds when he hurt Toney a little bit, otherwise Toney made him miss. He just plodded into Toney, while Toney was doing his shoulder rolls, slipping and easily showing he landed more clean on Peter.

? what type of comment is that? herol graham schooled julian jackson for 11 rounds but didnt win did he? Or are you being deliberately thick?

I wouldnt say any fight where a boxer gets decked (more than once in this occasion) can be viewed as schooling. no matter how biased you are..

Peter is no cert to beat Maskaev.

Maskaev could probably beat him like he beat Samil Sam as Peter has no Jab to trouble Oleg.

Would be a good fight. Maskaev could be out for a while though I believe. I wonder if he will have time to fight a unification with Klitschko before his mandatory is due.

Wlad would rather fight Calvin Brock.

And Valuev's stuck to fighting DK Journymen.

If Herol Graham schooled Julian Jackson for 11 rounds, I must have been more drunk that night than I first thought :TU:

I think Maskaev has the better skills, and I think that against Peter he'd be doing well, and probably be winning on points, until Sam landed a bomb that spelt the beginning of the end. He's 37 now and won't be very mobile. Even when he was younger, he was blasted out early by McCall, Whitaker and even Kirk Johnson.

As good as Oleg's recent run has been, I recall him being flattened by Corey "T-Rex" Sanders a few years ago; Sanders was just a big journeyman who had a decent spell of form, and he crushed Oleg.

I just can't see Maskaev staying out of harms way for the full 12 rounds against Peter but stranger things have happened.

What I can see happening, is the general media going apeshit over Peter if he does win in spectacular fashion.

Graham was KO'd in the fourth, I remember it like it was yesterday! TIMBER! :-?

OOPS apologies must be thinking of a different fight.

Fact of the matter is Vlad did not "school" peter no matter how you look at it. That was my point.
