MALONEY 'IN THE DARK' OVER HARRISON'S NEW MANAGER
By Hugh Keevins

SCOTT HARRISON'S manager Frank Maloney last night claimed he knew nothing about the world champion dumping him in favour of a new business association with former boxer Barry Hughes.

But Hughes, whose Braveheart Promotions company has also signed up Scotland striker James McFadden, insists he has lodged a contract to handle Harrison's affairs with the British Boxing Board of Control.

And, today, Hughes expects to find out if Harrison's promoter, allegedly, has been successful with his purse bid to bring the Scot's world title unification fight with Juan Manuel Marquez to Glasgow instead of Mexico or Texas.

The end of the Harrison-Maloney partnership brings to a close an era in which the champion reached the summit in the ring before taking a year out to battle problems with alcohol and depression. He also faces a court appearance next month.

Hughes reckons a parting of the ways between Harrison and Maloney was inevitable. He added: "I was Scott's sparring partner for his first three professional fights and I'm a family friend.

"We have a lot to offer each other. I want him to train, fight and sleep and leave the rest to me."

Maloney, who hasn't had awritten contract with Harrison for three years, is currently out of the country but claims he spoke to Harrison's father and trainer, Peter, last week and was told nothing about a change.

Word is Maloney is under enormous stress. A breakdown has been mentioned.

Very sad, I like Frank Maloney a lot.

Wishing him a full recovery :box:

Really? Not heard this, that's sad news. It's hard not to like Maloney, plucky bloke who seems to have a genuine love for the sport. Him and Eugene have done a lot for grass roots support of boxing with little or no coverage for a long time-.

From my 'outsiders' viewpoint it looks like the end of Scott Harrison to me and not Frank Maloney.

With what has gone on this year I would honestly have some money on JMM stopping Harrison inside 3 rounds if they meet soon. I think there is a big chance Harrison will just completely unravel.

"Harrison in the shape of his life", yeah right bollocks is he.

Harrison might be in good physical shape, but mentally he will be in no state to fight a boxer of JMM's calibre.

Harrison will be battered and stopped.

A great shame.

A 100% fit and active Harrison would still get stopped by JMM in my opinion. This inactive version of Harrison has no chance. JMM in 6-8 one sided rounds. Look what Polo and Medina did to him, JMM is far fresher and superior to those two.

Cheers Colin.

I wonder what the odds will be like on a Marquez stoppage might have some of that.

I honestly hope that rumours of great stress, a break-down etc, are untrue. I like Frank and for it to be "the end" would be a great shame. I am sure Frank will be back. He has other fighters in his stable.

Fact that Maloney/Harrison had no written contract, shows that Frank trusted & liked Scott. There has been no loyalty shown whatsoever. I am also inclined to think that Harrison snr is somehow behind the split. He & Maloney have had many a different view in the past.

Harrison may well indeed be in good physical condition, but whatever the scenario, it will not be enough against JMM - a fighter who IMO, is on a different level in terms of skills, ability etc, than Scott Harrison is.

Also, other boxers in Maloney's stable have probably been neglected some-what since Harrison has had all his problems. From what I remember, Frank was giving a great deal of time & effort towards Scott Harrison.

Anyway, I wish Frank the best, and I hope Harrison gets KO'd when.if he fights again. :box:

Putting aside Harrison's well-documented personal problems, taking over the management of a boxer when he holds a version of the world title is about as easy as management must get, especially if there are no contractual issues with the previous manager.

However, will this Hughes have any clout at all when things aren't so rosy in the Harrison garden ? Marquez will batter him senseless and relief him of the title, and the only plausible alternative to that is for Scott to vacate the belt in the meantime. Either way, he will not be world champion for much longer and what is his new manager going to do then ?

Many a deserving fighter gets overlooked for title opportunities and while I detest the corrupt nature of the sport, having influence and clout with the governing bodies does create advantages for a manager/promoter's boxers.

Maloney has a wealth of experience and contacts within the sport. I wish him well :D

Marquez is a class boxer and i feel always would beat a moroader like Harrison. Medina beat Harrison and Medina is no Marquez.

The way Harrison ploughs forward in straight lines is meat and drink to a fighter who can counterpunch like Marquez. I am convinced he wins pretty easily.

I'm sure Frank will be back and I hope he does. One thing I cannot take away from him is his passion for his boxers and I'm sure kick in the teeth like this he will take to heart.

He has a good eye for talent and I'm sure he'll snap up a prospect again.

Does anyone know if the association is just a management or a promotional thing - i.e. Is Scott still part of SN.

Inside 3rounds - wouldn't go for that 1. JMM is not a puncher, JMM does not apply pressure or like to come forward, Harrisons 2 divisions bigger than JMM.......go for a JMM stoppage but not inside 3rounds you'll lose money mate

I think Hughes is going to be manager of Kenny Anderson as well, looks as if he might become a bit of a player in Britain.

As for JMM v Harrison , i don't think its going to be the walk in the park for JMM that some of you think, if Scott has got himself right, then he's the strongest Featherweight in the world, and will cause JMM alot of problems.

barry has a lot of connections in the game all over britain and he has already got kenny anderson.

scott is still a sn fighter so that may have something to do with it.
gary young may be next to move :TU:

Stinks to me this. Have to say Maloney used to get on my tits but have completely come round in the past few years and like the geezer. He does seem to care about his fighters and fought Harrison's corner well several times when Scott was unravelling. I know there is no real loyalty in this business but I still reckon the Scot has been a bit of a shithouse here. What goes around comes around tho eh?

Just got this BTW.

allegedly has secured home advantage for his charge WBO World Featherweight Champion Scott Harrison for his defence against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Purse bids were opened today at the WBO headquarters in Puerto Rico and Warren's bid of $748,000USD saw off the $715,000USD bid submitted by Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter of Marquez.

Mexican Marquez became the Interim Champion following his seventh round stoppage of Terdsak Jandaeng last month in Nevada after Harrison was granted an extension by the WBO on his mandatory defence due to medical reasons.

Warren said, "I'm delighted that I have secured my man the home advantage for his world title defence against Marquez. It will be a tough fight and every advantage we can get will count in Scott's favour."

A date and venue for the contest will be announced shortly.

For some reason with this fight I have Breland-Honeygan in my head.

That sort of 'fight'.

Marquez hasn't been very active either though.

How would he handle Harrison's strength?

I still say if Harrison is ok physically and mentally then he can win this fight. I'm not saying he's favourite but JMM has lost recently, and that was when he travelled overseas, so he might be a bit put off by that fact.
Also everyone here seems to think he's a big puncher, he isn't , he punches sharp, but isn't a KO puncher, so Harrison would be able to get inside of him.

This will be Marquez's third fight this year, and Harrison's first. How on earth does that make Marquez inactive?

I'm far from convinced that this fight will come off. Rather ironic that after Maloney stuck by Harrison, Scott it seems has now stuck the knife in when Maloney is having problems!... nothing like good old fashined loyalty!... :x :x :x :-? :o

Harrison's not one for avoiding fighters though.
