Warren wins purse bid!

Tuesday, September 5 2006

Harrison-Marquez clash headed to UK

allegedly has secured home advantage for his charge WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison for his defense against Juan Manuel Marquez. Purse bids were opened today at the WBO headquarters in Puerto Rico and Warren's bid of $748,000 saw off the $715,000 bid submitted by Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter of Marquez. Marquez became the interim champion following his seventh round stoppage of Terdsak Jandaeng last month in Lake Tahoe after Harrison was granted an extension by the WBO on his mandatory defense due to medical reasons. Warren said, "I'm delighted that I have secured my man the home advantage for his world title defense against Marquez. It will be a tough fight and every advantage we can get will count in Scott's favor." A date and venue for the contest will be announced shortly.

C'mon Harrison! :box:

Can;t believe some here hate Harrison just because of the Polo decision, Harrison doesn't decide who gets the decision.

I don't suppose the smacking people around in pubs & generally acting the tw@ helped. You'll probably see a bit of a softening in attitude towards Scott if he has managed to sort his personal demons out.

Well he was going through problems since he went to a clinic.

Maybe his antics could of been overexagerated by the media too.

I guess Harrison gets to elbow, rabbit punch and low blow his way through the fight then like against Medina

High lights of Marqeuz's last fight.

Hmm, If Marquez brawls like that it might work in Harrison's favour.

Terdsak made Marquez swell up too.

How do these bids work then exactly? I'm thinking they both write their bid down, highest wins? As I can't see Oscar getting outbid by Warren if it were in an auction format  And what happens with the money exactly?

Nice one! Glad that Warren has confidence in Scott. Credit for Harison for wanting to keep his title. Of all the British vs foreigners fights, this is the one where I can see the brit losing & this is the one where my main reason for tuning in is to see the other guy's skills.

But Harrison is very physically strong. JMM can get drawn into physical fights that aren't good for him. With Jandaeng, sure it was the guy's southpaw stance that got him in the fight with JMM (after a bad early beating).

Not going to support Harrison just because he is British. Will definitely be chearing on Marquez and hope he can get into some big fights at superfeather.

Although his life outside the ring leaves a lot to be desired, the reason I don't like Scott the boxer is that I find him very limited and very fortunate to have as many wins as he has and hold a world title. Haven't been impressed with him since he beat up on little Wayne McCullough (also a reason why I dislike him)

British boxing is looking pretty healthy. Plenty of major fights on the world scene, 2005 Hatton-Tszyu, 2006, Calzaghe-Lacy, Woods-Johnson III, upcoming Witter-Corley, Harrison-Marquez & maybe Calzaghe-Woods. I go for Marquez to have too much finesse. Genuinely great fighter (in terms of ability, as opposed to management & career choices)

i'm sick o the shit that scott gets on forums.

people bang on about his conduct out of the ring but look at tyson for example. fair enough scott will never achieve what tyson did in the ring but at the same time his conduct out of the ring is nowhere near as bad as tyson's was. yet folk won't have a bad word said about iron mike but they're all quick enough to kick harrison when he's down.

and at least scott aint some chicken shit like half the fighters these days that are also praised to high heaven by most.

i really hope scott takes marquez out in this fight, though i can't really see it happening, but even if he doesn't he still deserves respect for getting in the ring with him in the first place. its a big gamble and one most boxers now would duck.

come on scotty boy! :box:

You'll not hear me disrespecting Scott. Whilst his antics outside the ring leave something to be desired, he's hardly the first or last boxer to have a bit of iffy conduct. He obviously has some issues with drink and/or drugs and that's something he has to face.

Scott is however an example of a fighter who seems to be braver than his management and in this day and age where fighters can lurk behind dodgy mandatories or iffy belts, that is to be highly commended. Scott has a pretty good level of opposition prior to being champ and since. He's not trying to duck Marquez, and I believe he would take on Guzman too if he somehow gets past Juan.

Juan is maybe slowing a little, if he's getting involved in a brawl like he did in his last fight.

This has the potential to be a truly cracking fight. One thing is for sure, Warren is going to give Scott every possible advantage, smaller ring, home crowd bellowing and a sympathetic referee who will allow scott a bit of leeway. That's the way it runs. Scott will need every advantage he can get

Funny isn't it, despite the talk of the state of the game in this country, we may soon have four world champs, with Hatton, Witter, Harrison and Calzaghe, for me all having legitimately earned the right to call themselves a world champion.

I think purse bids work this like; a promoter can put in whatever bid he wants, but if he is successful (ie, if his bid is the highest), he is then tied to delivering the purses stated in the bid.

Therefore, in advance of the deadline, a promoter will add up anticipated ticket sales, tv money and other revenue streams, and then work out how much the show will cost, his own profit margin, and the purses for the two main event participants. Add it all up, and submit it to the appropriate body, and patiently wait for the deadline to come round, all the while thanking your lucky stars that these organisations are honest beyond reproach

The promoter with the highest bid (providing everything else is above board with both camps) ends up staging the fight... wherever his bid states.

Whatever else we may criticise Warren for, he obviously knows how to make money from boxing promotions and in this particular case, he has outbid De La Hoya's organisation and thus secured home advantage for Scott Harrison.

You could argue that this reflects two things; (a) Warren feels it is important for Scott to have the added benefit of home advantage for such a tough fight, and (b) the backers of Marquez are confident that their man will win, even in the opponents backyard.

Naturally, I assume that purse bids are like silent auctions. Otherwise winning bids would only be pounds more than the rival bid.

Tyson gets his share of flack. Harrison seems ot go out looking for trouble more so than Tyson though.

Harrisons not chicken shit? Well this fight has been forced on him, he ducked out of a Guzman fight, he didnt rematch Polo, and has never fought an elite fighter. No hes not chicken shit hes a fighter but he isnt chosing to fight the best either

Well done Frank for getting Harrison homeground advantage - he'll need it too.

If this fight went to Texas or even Mexico, then Scot may as well have sent a postcard as turn up, such would be his chances of winning.

But things look a hell of a lot better for him in front of a fired up homecrowd - and Scotland in mid winter is no place for a Mexican.... 8)

Not sure what to make of his new best mate/manager situation though...

Yes the governing body involved opens the sealed bids on the due date and the highest bid wins. In reality we know how crooked these bodies are I am sure some of the bids are not as sealed as they should be at times.

Guzman was on until Joan decided he'd pull out and go to Super Feather.

Polo was rewarded with a shot at Marquez because of that draw, so who would you rather of fought? Marquez also had two of the main belts at the time.

How could you compare Tyson's antics to Harrisons! :o

Which turned out to be a great move by Guzman Max because Harrison didn't fight on the date in the end and now he has a shot at Barrios and a deal with GBP.

How many times did Harrison delay the fight, 3 wasn't it?

Posted: 06 Sep 2006, 08:48
by lvlarc
I only remember them delaying it once, due to a mouth infection I think, or was that against St Clair?

But yes you are right it turned out to be a good move by Guzman.

I only recall once, officially, but totally agree. As I said at the time, Guzman has a career to be getting on with so made the right move knowing that Sportsnetwork's history of boxers pulling out.

I'll be cheering Marquez on too. He's a far better advert for the sport of boxing than Scott Harrison with his endless list of of hand picked opponents he's fought.

Yea but there were rumours Harrison wasgoing to pull out again while getting in the trouble with the law. I dont blame Guzman for pulling out on a fight that wouldnt have likely to have happened

Lets look at what Tyson actually did - wrongly accused of rape (most people would accept this but who knows), had fights - mainly with people harrassing him, swore at people and fighters.....Tysons also done some decent things - charity work, been very genorous too a fault, its not exactly worse than Harrison but at least Tyson does it with some charisma.

more trouble for Harrison - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing

Boxer Harrison detained at court
Boxer Scott Harrison has had his trial for a string of alleged offences, including police assault, adjourned.
The world featherweight champion, from Cambuslang, denied the charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court and his hearing was put off until February.

Outside the court, the 29-year-old was detained by Strathclyde Police in connection with an alleged assault in East Kilbride in July.

The warrant gives police six hours to question the boxer.

Mr Harrison appeared at the court on Wednesday following an alleged disturbance at a pub in Glasgow city centre in April.

He was charged, along with two other men, with refusing to leave the pub, resisting arrest and kicking a police officer.

Mr Harrison has been ordered by the boxing authorities to defend his WBO title by November.
