Hagler finally wins world middleweight crown. Disgraceful scenes afterwards though.

the scenes at Minter Hagler were bad....but this was really just an overflow from the violent football yob culture at the time....those days happily are long gone..... and Hagler is remembered now as the greatest middle of all time bar none

livingstone cole wrote:Disgracefull behaviour. I'm glad that it's somewhat of a rarity that boxing fans behave like this. I remember the crowd kicking off once, I think it was a show in Sheffield. The MC (a well known one) was shouting through his mic, 'Behave yourselves, behave yourselves!', it was dealt with quite well I think.
i seem to remember the mc shouting that from the centre of the ring during a robert mccraken fight in birmingham. i cant remember who he was fighting but it went off big time in the crowd with chairs flying through the air in the background whilst the fighters were still fighting. eventually it got so bad they had to stop the bout and at one point the t.v commentators were commentating from beneath the ring apron. i think that was footy related or something.
thankfully scene`s like these are very rare these days.

Steve Foster. Mind you, McCracken's licence nearly come under threat due to some of the mindless idiots who used to follow him about. I forget how many times they were involved in trouble at McCracken's bouts.

I'm in no way defending the disgraceful scenes that we've witnessed here is Britain, but what got me was some American commentator who during a bad episode said "what is it with you guys?" i.e it's only the British who are involved in violent situations at boxing shows.

I've seen very nasty events at shows on the other side of the atlantic too.

Yes the post Bowe v Golota riot tops anything seen on these shores.

I always thought Robinson overrated as a middleweight. Great fighter, but his best days were at Welterweight, he was beatable at middleweight, something Hagler wasn't in his prime.

yeah they even waded into fan man if my memory serves me right.
the yanks do try to portray the rest of the world as `soccer riot` mad when in fact some of the worst sporting related riots have been over there. i saw one on t.v that involved an ice hockey team winning the stanley cup or whatever its called for the first time in years and their fans went on a rampage.
it was bad...........cars turned over and on fire, shops looted, lampposts ripped down..........the works.
makes the poll tax riots over here look like two old ladies disscussing the weather.
good job they won, i`d hate to see what they would have done if they lost.

It's funny, but often the worst sports relate violence is perpetrated by the winning team's fans. I guess it's the rampant adrenalin, mixed with booze and the sight of the dejected beta male figuratively speaking.

I think I saw a clip of that riot you're on about, it was absolutely bonkers, teams of men physically flipping cars over and setting fire to them on the streets! Now I'm all for celebrating, but sheeeeeeaaat!

The fan man had the misfortune to land right on top of Riddick Bowe's wife rendering her unconscious, something Riddick himself would do on several occasions but without the massive audience. I remember seeing one of riddick's mates lamping him over the head with a mobile phone, more dangerous than it sounds considering the average mobile back in 1996 was the same weight and size as a house brick

The irony was that apparently the fan man was something of a peace protestor. He wanted to bring the fight to a halt to make a point about boxing being a blood sport, but instead hospitalised someone's wife and then got the shit kicked out of him.......protesting can be a dangerous business :TU:

Don't blame a hockey riot on us, that was Montreal.

Robinson's record at welterweight was something like 123-1-1. That's outrageous...and he fought above par fighters. I would rank Robinson as 3rd behind Monzon and Hagler when it comes to middleweight, but welterweight he is number one, hands down.

I remember rooting for Minter until his disgraceful comments before the fight, then I hoped that Hagler would batter him, which he duly did! :box:

What exactly did Minter say?
I know he his comments were deemed racist,I just wondering what it was he actually said?

He said he would never let a black man take his title.

There is an argument for making Henry Armstrong top dog. He wasn't as long lived at the top as many other champions, but christ he was a killer of men.

This his record was 20 defences, 19 KO's, in 2 years! Thing was he often weighed 140 or less whist fighting as welterweight champion!

That's truly incredible

What is also incredible is that Robinson was shut out from the Welterweight title for about 5 years before winning it, imagine what kind of record he would have had as champion had he got his shot earlier!

I had a look at that Hagler-Minter link on youtube...every time I watched it the broadcast got about one minute in then wouldn't let me get any further. Does anybody know why that might be?

Cheers,

Dan

Another poster has confirmed it.

It was probably what caused the trouble afterwards, as the wrong crowd decided to get in on the act.

To be fair to Minter, he has sinced retracted the statement, acknowledged how wrong it was & apologised.

i saw the fight at the time, from the safety of my armchair, and have seen it 3 or 4 times since - alan wasnt getting battered he was still very much in the fight but due to his cuts he had to be more aggressive than usual, this was meat and drink to hagler who picked him off with some great jabs and one particularly brutal uppercut.

It's only fair to mention that Minter has also said he regretted making that comment and him and Hagler, I believe, still keep in contact with each other.

That is strange. I met Alan Minter the week of the Hagler / Sibbo fight, and asked him who he fancied for the win as he'd faced both. His reply " Thats easy with Sibbo i was doing ok but then o was gone. With Hagler every single punch Fu,,,ckin hurt "

There are many who strongly believe that along with his 3 most famous adversaries,Hagler would not entertain the bodysnatcher. If this is true, it would seem that he thought he was beatable. I only say this because Leonard admitted such to McCallum and threw in the others names too.
