Curtis Woodhouse

Any opinions after seeing his first fight?
OK, so it was only over 4 x twos, but for a (very) raw novice I was quite impressed. It was apparent he was nervous but what debuing fighters aren't? He was certainly exciting and i'll look forward to watching his next bout.
Surely he'll struggle to drop another 10 pounds to get down to Lt Welter though. He has massively wide shoulders and didn't look to be carrying to much spare weight last night....

I'd say a British title is definitely achievable for him on last night's evidence, but I don't know if he'll go much further than that. He did put on a reasonably promising display though.

Just out of interest, how did he get a license?

Curtis looked to have fast hands and he knew his way around the ring, i'm not to sure on the switch hitting style, he looked better when just boxing orthadox.
This being his debut you have to give him a few faults, plus the nerves of getting into the pro ring for the first time.
I can't see him getting down to Light-welter, he seemed pretty cut as it was, think welter will be his division.

Cut? I thought he looked emaciated...like a prisoner of war.
I thought he was OK for a first fight...still I think an area title is probably the best he can aim for.
He seems likeable and honest. I enjoyed the fight.

Yeah, enjoyed the fight - think he will be a value for money fighter if nothing else.
Not sure how far he will go - cause I don't know much about his boxing background (i.e. when did he take up the sport, did he box as a kid, is it in his genes etc).
It could be a bit different to the Mundine situation, at least Mundine had his father assessing his boxing talents as a Kid. He probably KNEW he was handy before making the switch.... did Woodhouse? If yes, how?
If, as once claimed, that he only stepped into the gym recently, then he might go to British title level. At 26 he is still young enough and if this was a 20 year old ex amateur star making his pro debut he would have had more praise.
If he had been in the gym off and on for a while (which I suspect) then I don't think he will win an area belt.

Your comments show a general lack of respect to boxers, guys who have the bottle to step through the ropes.
Hold it down

Not bad for his first ever fight.
The two knockdowns were great!

This guy needs to fornicate off back to the conference where he belongs.

Why should he? Woodhouse is following his dream, how many of us can say that!
He may not go on to be a champion , but he's giving it all he can , and should be respected for that.
I don't understand why all the hostility against him, Woodhouse hasn't been shooting his mouth off saying he's the best, he knows he's got loads of work to do, and has set himself a realistic target, of fighting for the British title.
I don't know if he'll get that far, but good on him for trying.

Good luck to Curtis, because he is living the dream and has the bottle to get in there but please can he stop telling us how he can win professional titles.
He is and will be no more than a four-round fighter. He got clipped twice by nothing shots by an opponent who looked like he belonged on the unlicensed circuit and nearly fell over both times.
Because he has a top promoter behind him he will get well matched but that doesn't mean he will make it.
At least he was better than the ITV commentary the other night. Pissed my pants when the trainer told Hobson to through a left over the top and Rawling said: "Hobson's corner are telling him to go for the body."

Graham I have actually fought in the ring I know what it takes, trying to make boxer out of a footballer who wasnt dedicated enough to stick to his original sport which he actually had a talent for,is a joke. The guy Curtis boxed was useless.SN are trying to to build this guy up because it will make a good selling point and create interest his career will not last 10 fights. It is actually and insult to fighters who have to come up through the ranks and are much more talented than this guy.Idiots like Barry et al trying to glam it up,anyone punter who knows the game realises this.

Guru, know where you are coming from but don't go over the top.
It would have been MUCH easier for him to pick up a pay cheque playing football (and carrying two extra stone), and much more lucrative too than stepping through the ropes.
It takes some bottle to chase your dreams - especially when it's at the cost of a relatively pampered lifestyle.
I've seen a lot of debutants more raw than he was and thought he did well for someone with no amateur experience.

Exactly, I doubt Curtis will make more money from boxing than he could have done from footie, even 2nd and 3rd division players are making relatively silly money these days.
It take some bollocks to get in a ring and fight, even more so as a latecomer with no real amateur experience.
Ok, so he might not ever achieve much in the sport, but so what, there's plenty of other fighters out there with an amateur background who never achieve anything much either.
Good luck to him I say, he's a better man than I Gunga Din.

Could there be a potential fight with Aaron Thomas, son of former football legend Mickey Thomas in the future. both look to be fighting around Welter, both have football connection, both have come forward styles and both debuting in sept 2006.

The guy didn't do all that bad considering his lack of experience. As others have said he may not end up as a world beater, but at least hes giving it a shot.

Have to give Woodhouse a few more fights before you can really gauge him, he was definatly shook up by a couple of shots on Friday, be interesting how they match him.

Terence wrote:The problem that springs to minds is how long has he boxed/sparred for? If he has only taken it up in very recently he could get KO'd sooner rather than later as he has no past history of vaccinating himself against the shots. People have come to boxing from other backgrounds yet it is often a combat sport background.
This guy might be Ok, he could do with some sparring partners who will shake him up so he doesn't have to find out what boxing is really about during a fight.
According to Woodhouse, he used to spar regularly at his local gym during his playing days, but kept it quiet from his manager.
It's a bit of a shot getting lamped hard in a fight, and it's something he won't be accustomed to.

You should fornicate off back down the landing where you belong you filthy beast.
As for Woodhouse, what's he done to you? Never had a fight in his life and looked okay. Why don't you stop hanging around dressing rooms and put the gloves on next time and give us all a laugh.
Got to be less painful that being spat at and tasting broken glass in your meal tray aye Bennie!!!
Hang Him, Hang Him, Hang Him

Like a lot of novice fighters, the test for them is keeping some form and composure when hit. I've seen a lot of hard guys who love boxing, and love the idea of being a boxer, come undone once hit with a few decent shots. Not that they are hurt, as such, but they don't know how to respond in that situation. That's why amateur experience is essential, unless of course they are prodigiously talented.
Good luck to Curtis I hope he doesn't expect too much, because I don't think will achieve much, apart from fulfilling an ambition.
BTW I had to laugh at his opponents ring entrance. The fella didn't half milk his 15 mins.
