I just watched that fight again... do you guys think that douglas could have gotten up? seems to me like he could have. a lot of people questionned his gut before this... that is the perfect example of why in my view

this should be asked in the boxers of the past forum but yes I think Dogulas could have gotten up.

Picture perfect punch. Watch it in slo-mo.

But, as Holy was never known as a one punch KO man, maybe Douglas could have gotten up.

I doubt it, though.

But it's a great shot either way.

Douglas had enough sense and strength to sit up, check his nose to see if it was bleeding, and then a few more seconds to ponder what to do next. In my mind, he "clearly" had enough in himself to get back to his feet, but chose instead to stay down for the count, and make a ton of money for just only 2 1/2 rounds of effort. I think he walked away with something like 23 million. That alone will buy you alot of cheeseburgers for years to come, as it looks like that is exactly what he did.

Douglas was getting taken to school in every facet of that fight. He was getting out jabbed, out boxed, out punched, and by only the third round was dropped and dropped HARD by a beautiful counter right.

The shot landed flush and no doubt rocked him.

I think he might have been able to get up, but he was for sure still hurt and hurt bad, and the end was coming. He chose to stay down and stay the execution.

Nothing was going to stop Evander Holyfield from winning that title that night. Not the Douglas that showed up that night, nor the one that showed up to beat Tyson. Evander was not going to be denied. End of discussion.

Douglas had one of the worst defenses for an undisputed champs ever. He showed up fat out of shape, and stunk up the joint. The uppercut from Tyson was definately harder than the punch from Holyfield. I think he could've gotten up but Holyfield had all of the answers to everything he threw.

So people think Holyfield could take the better versions of Douglas? It would have been interesting to see Holyfield fight Douglas when Douglas was in better condition.

Offensively Holyfield had the whole arsenal. I don't think Douglas can beat a prime Evander.

It’s hard to question Buster’s gut for this fight. It was hanging over his trunks for everyone to see. To me, this was a perfect example of a guy who was in there for the pay day. Could he have gotten up? Probably, but the better question is whether or not he even trained for the fight.

Its pretty obvious Bus could have got up, since hes laid there clear eyed & rubbing his face nonchalontly.

Buster was out of shape & had no interest in winning the fight. The title had been a nightmare for him & he wanted to ride off low key with his 24 mil.

Fair play to him.

Technically he was probably able to stand up, but do you think it could change anything?


I don't agree about Holyfield power (or, as someone mentioned, lack of it). Holy was very good counter-puncher, and when you hit at the right time you don't need to put a lot of power to put your opponent down. And if I remember properly Holyfield mentioned this KO when asked about the most perfect punch he has thrown.

Douglas was a disgrace that night.

He was champion of the world by virtue of a scintillating performance against Tyson and then he couldn't be arsed to train for Holyfield let alone fight him.

Instead he lay on the canvas dreaming of waffles and burgers as the referee counted him out and signalled the end to the reign of one of the most disgusting heavyweight champions in history.

Men have put everything on the line to win and defend that title, being beaten to within inches of their lives and Douglas sullies their memories flat on his back like the lazy fat gutless oaf he is.

He was a boxer being paid peanuts for a decade fella, got no breaks and paid little v Tyson. He was entitled to his 24 mil as far as i'm concerned.

Yes some people have died fighting for titles, thats them. Buster was looking out for himself. Thats life, get over it.

Yeah, he gets a pass on some of this stuff simply because of the masterful performance against Tyson - even if we agree that it was a diminished Tyson and, for the sake of a better historical narrative, we wish young Holyfield had had the chance to meet that Tyson instead of "undeserving" Buster Douglas.

Watch the KO. It's beautiful.

Could Spinks have gotten up against Tyson? Maybe. But there's no denying Tyson was the better man in the ring that night.

Same goes for Holyfield against Douglas.

Who's to say he's a disgrace? It's a tough sport and it was tough business in the 80s, when Buster was busting his ass. Maybe he achieved greatness against Tyson and couldn't handle it. History has spoken. He got a beat down against ATG Holyfield and lost his title. Why pile on?

Yes but that's no reason to rip off the fans watching world wide with an I'm just glad to be here folks type "performance."

Of course the fat lump could've got up, not that he was ever gonna win in that shape. A sad and sorry end to a fairy tale story.
