Well other than the fact that I was born during the middle of his career and considering I've never even heard his name spoken before, I don't have any other excuses.

I was HUGE Starling fan, but I have to give a very slight edge to DLH. Of course, DLH had difficulty against Trinidad, Quartey and Mosley, so it’s hardly a stretch to think that Starling could have done at least as well as Quartey and the powerful but rather limited Trinidad. Very competitive matchup.

Oscar wouldn't even fight Vernon Forrest after he whipped Shane..So it's safe to say he wouldn't even fight Starling if they were both around at the same time..

Just curious. Are you familiar with Marvin Johnson? I occassionally see him doing TV comericals here in Indy. Ever time I see him on TV I think, Oh Marvin Johnson, I almost forgot about him and he is right here.

Starling was one of the best defensive fighters of all-time.

Oscar would outwork the lazy version of Marlon that often showed up, but the focused one that dismantled Honeyghan and Breland would outclass Oscar.

I have to agree. Starling had all the tools to compete effectively with Oscar. It would have been a great fight, as Starling was not exceptionally fast or quick or powerful. But he was crafty and mobile and athletic. Oscar had trouble with an over-the hill Sweet pea and Shane Mosely. But those guys are better than Magic Man, IMO. It's a tough call, but I'd have to go with Starling. If we're talking guys like Donald Curry, Buddy Mcgirt and Simon Brown, I'd definitely have to pick against Oscar, but I'd favor Oscar over many of the top 80's welters (including pipino cuevas and Milton Mccrory) since he is taller and faster than most at welter, also had quite a bit of power.

If you have ever read about Jerry Quarry and the way his career has been described, in actuality Marlin Starling fits the description that has been written about Jerry Quarry more so than Quarry himself. For one reason you could make a borderline argument for Marlins greatness, on the other hand Quarry fell well short of greatness. Quarry was always described as being up and down, the same could be said about Marlin. Quarry has always had it said about him that he was jinxed. You could say the same about Starling. The punch that came after the bell, the headbut loss to Johnny Bumphus, the contiversial draw to Mark Brealand, the split decsision loss to Donald Curry. It was said about Quarry how he would beat great fighters and lose to lesser ones when in actuality he mostly beat over hyped overated fighters. But Marlin would beat great fighters and lose to lesser ones. So if you want to get an accurate desciption of Marlin Starling, read up on Jerry Quarry and apply it to Marlin instead.

I agree, all who don't know or have never heard of Marlon " Magic man" Starling, should be ban from boxrec. After all it was he who ended the hopes of who many thought was the next great welterweight....can you name him?

Isn't Marlon about 3 inches taller and a big natural Welter. Oscar as good as he was is a blown up Lightweight and against Starling who was a great Welter I see him losing by decision

Sorry can't let you get away with calling Tito limited . He deserves more respect than that .

A guy who fought everyone , always showed great heart in overcoming adversity in a fight , and could bang with the best . I'll admit he could sometimes be caught early in a fight but I think calling him limited is unfair .

This is all opinion, but Tito was rather slow footed with average boxing skills and defense. He had a great deal of success because of his power, strength and recuperative abilities not necessarily his boxing skills. When confronted with opponents who he didn’t have a physical advantage over he had problems. Limited may have been a bit harsh, but it’s hard to call him anything better than an average technician.
