Right......Help needed ASAP
Im just starting my Graphic Products course at college..
I'm building the interior of a Boxing Gym, which then converts in to a main hall for boxing shows!
If you are a Boxing Trainer i would like to know...
1. What Sort of Space would be most suited.
2. What rooms and equipment (and Quantity) would be needed (Changing Rooms, bar, bags, rings etc)
3. What amount of seating (small hall show)
If you are a Boxer i would like to know...
Any specific things you would want in your gym?
If you are a Spectator i would like to know...
If there are any specific things you would like at a show. (Comfy Seating, bars, toilets etc)
Any other thoughts and ideas will be gladly taken in to account!!!! Also remember Money is not an issue!!!!

What I liked about my old club was that they refurbished the gym so that it included the ring they used for home shows. It got you really used to the ring dimesnions and tensions.
As for other requirements, it would depend alot on numbers. I would like room for one heavy bag per person (with plenty of space) a few floor to ceiling speed balls, a school bench (maybe against the ring) to do step ups (a good warm up exercise) and pigeon holes for mitts, skipping ropes etc.

All that Stu said pluse: Floor to cealing mirrors so you can watch yourself shaddow boxing is useful as you can see what is going wrong with both feet and hands. Two rings is best and a big old wall clock (with a second hand) to time circuts.
Chin up bars are an added bonus, and depending on how bothered you are about such things mats for exersises on the floor (press ups knuckle and regular, and the mirriad of things you do for your abbs and sholder) A few bar bells and dumb bells of varying weights.

Holding shows at the gym is not the ideal setup IMO, because they are going to be too limited in size to stage any sizeable event and too large to create a proper atmosphere when working out. Add to that the unique aroma that comes with a gym after years of men sweating and farting leaving their workout clothes behind to walk home by themselves I think you may understand what I mean.

:)
But here goes. The ideal gym will require 2 rings. The main one should be in the centre of the space, the second will be easily dismantled to clear space around the main one for the audience. There should be an area for about 8 or 9 punch bags of different weight with plenty of space around each so that those using them dont trip over each other's feet. There should be space next to the bag area with 3 or 4 top and bottom speed balls and 3 or 4 ceiling balls. The flooring Throughout the gym should be unvarnished wood so that you dont slip on the sweat and condensation, a problem I hated when working out.
The next space will for be skipping/ shadow boxing with floor to ceiling mirrors.
Another space for groundwork with plenty of mats and equipment for abdominal workouts. A few exercise bikes will be useful for warmups/losing some extra weight. And a full set weights including dumbells and barbell bench etc.
A lockup cupboard with bag gloves, skipping ropes, sparring gloves, protectors, headguards etc., although most fighters have their own.
A spacious changing room with plenty of shower facilities so that you dont have to wait around for bloody ages when the gym's packed. Perhaps a treatment bench for massages or treating strains or muscle pulls would also be nice.
Also a good regulated heating system for the gym to get the sweat flowing allowing fighters to shed weight, especially during winter.
I think that covers most of the basics of an ideal gym.

All these plush new ones are designed for the white collar faggots who don't even spar let alone fight.
All you need is a ring, a few heavy bags, a floor to ceiling ball, room to skip, a big mirror and a bench to sit down and change.
That's right real boxing gyms do tend to be dirty and drafty. But the thread is about the IDEAL boxing gym for a lad's college course.
You give any ex or current fighter the choice of training in a run down, shithole with hardly any facilities and drafty as fvck during the winter OR training in a state of the art gym with every facility to assist their training, they'll go for the latter every time.
I think you'll need more than just a couple of bags and one top and bottom ball and room to skip if you're going to have 15-30 boxers all training at the same time. That's of course if you want to keep them all interested.

Hi,
some other ideas.
Seating. In a lot of German sports halls they have retractable seating which folds out of a wall. The seats are staggered, so that everone gets a good view. You get approximately 5 levels in a 4m high area. Folded up, the seats take about a 80cm space. Not that comfy, but adequate and space efficient.
Television. If your going to have 200 or so spectators then you can get on TV. You got to have a place for decent camera positions, decent lighting around the arena and a decent sound system for walk-in music etc. Allow a decent length path for the ring walk as well.
Sounds obvious, but you have to have enough room around the ring for the cornermen, judges, doctors, other officials and advertising banners.
Catering. If you are going to put on an event with 200 spectators then you need a decent bar and perhaps a small kitchen area. I'd put this in a foyer, not in the gym area. While your at it, put a couple of heavy bags and speed balls in the foyer area, so that the punters get into the mood before the fight.
Fire regulations. If you do have a hall with 200 people in it, then make sure the exits are clearly marked with wide double doors that open outward.
