I've never heard of Ali fighting after Dec 1981.
He had Parkinson's at that time (although it wasn't officially known), I can't imagine anybody allowing him to fight, even in an exhibition of some sort.

He was going to come back, being promoted by Harold Smith, to fight John L Gardner in summer 1982.
Smith got imprisoned and the fight never happened
If it had, Ali may have beaten Gardner on points but this would have propelled him into a fight against Dokes/Weaver/Tate/Coetzee.
Any of those would have given Ali a frightful beating.

That was a joke in bad taste don't you think.

Here's an interesting question...if Ali had faced "Big" John Tate for the WBA title [like he was supposed to originally] do you think it would have been as brutal as the Holmes fight, OR do you think Ali would have been able to beat Tate?

It would have been a brutal beating as well. Tate was a very good offensive fighter. He had problems when he got hit on the chin.

I agree with you. The chances of Ali winning against Tate, I think would be greater, than it would be against Holmes...but I agree, he'd get butchered against Tate, though he wasn't that great a champion and certainly didn't capture people's attentions.
Ironically, I asked this very same question in the old UNIVERSUM [last I seen it was shut down due to racist comments] forum a few years back and a few people said that they believed Ali could have pulled the upset over Tate and could have been the first 4x titlist.

It would have been a very ugly beating for Ali! While Tate turned out not to be the great some expected he was a hell of a hard fighter to beat at the time when Ali was suppose to face him and though he did not have the skills of Holmes, Tate hit harder and it would have been a horrible beat down...at that point Ali was completely shot and did not have the ability to do much on offense, but more importantly not much he could do with defense either!

Yea...next someone will propose that Vitali Klitschko is somewhere out in the Ukraine having 'underground' fights with Lennox Lewis like in Rocky 3 when Balboa and Creed had that bout after he fought MR T, just to prove who was the better of the two

I'm sure the Gardner fight was discussed before Berbick, not after.

Yup, as I thought, according to NYT, Harold Smith was negociating in Jan '81 for Ali to fight Gardener in March '81
