Today september 23, 54 years ago we witnessed one of the greatest heavyweight title fights in boxing history.......Rocky Marciano KO 13 Jersey Joe Walcott. both fighters fought incredible preformances and both put on one of the great slugfests in heavyweight history. walcott fought nothing like his age and marciano dramatic ending right hand will live in boxing history for an eterniuty.

..the lower picture here is of one of my most favorite moments of all time in watching boxing....alas, it was all too brief and made a promise not to be fulfilled....

The best fight in a relatively poor era of heavyweight boxing. The 1930s had plentiful Marciano-Walcott fights. Including:

Sharkey vs. Schmeling I
Sharkey vs. Schmeling II
Schmeling vs. Stribling
Baer vs. Carnera
Braddock vs. Baer
Louis vs. Braddock
Louis vs. Baer

and of course:

Louis vs. Schmeling I

ps marciano did not fight in a poor era. marcianos era was filled with talented fighters. it wasnt one of the strongest, but it defintley was not one of the weakest.

Defining fight for both in a lot of respects,Marciano wins the title with a classic one punch KO, Walcott displays great skills and probably would have won if he'd have kept his left hand by his jaw.

this thread was a TRIBUTE to marciano-walcott I. show some respect for two all time greats putting on an incredible all time heavyweight title fight.

..the reason walcott's left was a bit too low was because walcott often shared the same flaw that he exploited against joe louis....both were inclkined to drop their left when throwing a right hand. if you study the walcott/marciano tape closely you'll see that walcott threw a right hand at almost exactley the same time marciano did. marciano's got there first....but...surprisingly..walcott's actually landed too....but it was just a tap....as it looks as if walcott was going down at just the same time it landed...

..when i've shown this on slow motion film, before doing so i claim that walcott actually landed the last punch of the fight....well, the last legal one anyway....marciano takes a look at the fallen walcott and belts him with a left hook before heading for his corner...which was marciano's customary version of ring generalship....

jaclem wasnt it you who said at one point walcott did a perfect display of defense(round 10 maybe?) making marciano throw punches that hit only air while walcott dodged the punches on the ropes. didnt u say it was a sequence you showed to ur fighters?

the last left didnt even matter, walcott was already dead from the right hand

Sometimes it does not matter whether the two combatants are classified as immortals (which in this case they were).

On the day, the style of Marciano and Walcott blended perfectly to create one of the great heawyweight title tilts.

Could Walcott have won if "ifs or buts" does not change anything. Marciano won, and nothing can change that.

It appears that in this case we are not discussing the merits of the winner vs the loser but the quality of the fight itself. And what a fight it was!!!!!

..my brockton buddy...yes...the left hook was irrelevant..walcott was out cold.

yes....walcott did show some of the best moves..defense, offense and combinations of both.. that i've ever seen. i did not say, and do not think,that he was perfect in every second of the fight. i was highly impressed (though saddened) by marciano's abilty to keep coming, taking some hard punches and seeming to get stronger as the rounds went on. (this is a quality i was often amazed by as i saw him in later fights.) the right hand was the perfect shot thrown at the perfect time.

i really don't think we have any significant disagreements about this fight.
