Skelton talks about title offer

by Old bones Ian
Team Skelton were approached about the possibility of fighting Maskaev in Moscow before the end of the year, but unfavourable terms meant Skelton was forced to turn the opportunity down.
However, the 39-year-old could be set to fight for the title in Britain in the New Year.
He told the Times & Citizen that he had a meeting with promoter allegedly last week to discuss the possible Maskaev pairing.
Skelton said: "Frank said there was a possibility, it was never set in stone.
"What he said was there was a possibility of a world title shot before Christmas, but it was not definite, and if there was it would take place in Russia.
"The money they were offering was not by any standards good to fight as a challenger.
"With him just winning the title, they want to have the fight in his country. It's like a homecoming.
"I would have to go there and be convinced I would stop him to get the decision.
"Ultimately it's something I would love to fight for. I want to win world titles."
Mr Warren, who advised Skelton not to take the fight, said:
"Commonwealth champ Matt Skelton was offered the Maskaev fight but the money was so derisory we had to turn it down."
Skelton hopes to get a shot at Maskaev's title in January or
February next year.
He said: "There's still the hope. It's not dead in the water.
"But I want to earn a good living, and you are only as good as your last fight."
Skelton hopes to return to the ring before the year is out and is already back in the gym, sparring a couple of times a week.
He said: "Frank said he will try and put together a fight before Christmas.
"They are throwing a few names up in the air."
A number of European fighters have been mentioned, while the name of Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison has also been mooted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So looks as if Warren was upfront and talked with Skelton about the offer, will have to wait and see if it turns out to have been a good idea to turn it down.

Fight against who? some one for the WBU title possibly?

You know, I went to the WBU's site today when you started the WBU for sale thread, just wandering whether there was any mention of it there.
Anyway, eventually stumbled on to the "upcoming fights" section. Of course, all fights are SN promoted. However, under heavyweight it said, "UNDER CONTRACT." I thought this a tad ominous. It can only be under contract to SN surely. Which I'd say in turn has to be Skelton. I suppose it could just be a safety net if all else fails. Or if something disastrous happens, like the Commonwealth board puts forward a slightly dangerous mandatory or something.

allegedly is having a shocking year so far: He said Skelton would get s title fight (Valuev being heavily hinted at)... nothing doing. He also said Calzaghe's next fight would be a 'super fight'... Sakio Bika.
ITV will be asking for a refund at this rate.

Mr Banjo baby: Dude, I normally keep my mouth shut when jingoistically crazed partisan posters open up, but tell me, you must have sat through the fornicating abortion that was Williams vs Skelton II, so pray tell me how in the sacred unknowable name of fornicate was that in any way "world class" (even in the debased hypertrophied versh that graces the heavyweight division these days)?
Was it the silky skills? The devastating punching accuracy & power? The honed conditioning of both men?
Or are you just talking absolute bollocks?
Are you honestly telling me that based on that performance (which I feel duty bound to remind you resembled two hippos engaged in a ritualistic mating dance) either of these two would last more than a handful of rounds against -- and I'm arbitrarily picking the dude as the benchmark of "world class" I know but bear with me here -- say, Wlad Klitschko? Or even Liakhovich?

World class would probably be defined as 2 world rated (top 15/20) fighters squaring off. By that definition it was World class.
Also, HW is very, very short of: 1. Silky skills... 2. honed conditioning... and 3. Devastating punching, power and accuracy.
World class HW boxing isn't what it once was.

Oh... okay. Good definition, by the way. Sorry, repeatedly horrified at just how low the heavies have sunk, I think. Destroys higher cognitive functions...

Wlad Kiltschko could beat Skelton and Williams on the same night.

Yep Williams and Skelton are fringe top 20 and I would take all 4 champs to give them a beating. The Danny Williams that lost to Sam would easily beat today's Williams and Skelton, that's the sort of level they are at.

Possibly at the same time if the ring was big enough.

I dunno Skelton could beat Samil Sam, he's overated.
Klitschko's chin always could crack though, then again he likes slow plodders to fight more.
The current crop of champs are getting way too much credit though.
Not sold on any HW.
Toney was robbed bad though, so the WBC ordering a rematch is right if it happens.

For all the stick Zab Judah gets I think everyone has respect for him taking a very small purse in order to win the title from Spinks and then set up some paydays.
I'd be willing to bet that Skelton never gets a world title shot. And Max Klitschko may have a weak chin but Skelton or Williams wouldn't get close to landing a shot on it. I agree Sam is overrated but then what does that make a fighter he handly stopped, beating him to the punch repeatedly

Max Klitschko, the worst of the 3 but still too good for our boys!

SKelton could beat Samil Sam.
Sam's a slow plodder like Williams but with a little more movement in him.
Orkhello was able to dance around Sam with Jabs!

My chin looks like Wlad's but it don't break.

Disagree there, have you seen Sam recently. He's gone very disinterested and barely wins over Bums, I thought he lost his last fight.

i acctually wouldnt mind seing Maskaev V Skelton, i think it would be a very exiting fight, and a decent first defence for Maskaev. if Skelton ever had a chance to win a world title this is it...who cares about the money it could be your last and only chance!
