Yeah, up to a point he was exciting in the 80s but 90% of those fights were one sided mismatches!... I'm thinking more along the lines of fighters who were in a lot of exciting competitive fights!...

Hamed was exciting if for no other reason than you were just waiting for someone to settle his hash....which is just what Barrera did. One defeat and the guy implodes....amazing for a guy who talked it up so much.

Foreman was a guy everybody wanted to see and got everyone's attention because he was made out to be indestructable.

Granted these two examples were as much media made as self made to some degree.

Danny Lopez, Wilfredo Gomez, Aaron Pryor...(surprised?) the word here was exciting not competent. and I give Aaron credit for getting people's attention. Duran, Hearns,. I recall people getting pretty cranked to see every one of Cleveland Williams fights because he was going to give it his best everytime.

Monzon, Hagler,Qawi,Marvin Johnson, Saad Muhammad, Victor Galindez, I think all those names got attention.

Carmen Basilio.

Evander Holyfield is a good one too. He had the whole offensive aresenal and was a bit eager to trade punches w/anyone.

He was involved in the Fight of the Year in '55, '56, '57, '58 and '59. And that's without the inclusion of other exciting battles such as the Pender and Langlois fights.

Geez! Buzz!! I must take umbrage at you for casting doubt about whether the Hawk was 'competent'............ .... he was an excellent fighter!... if he hadnt been competent I dont see him beating a still dangerous Alexis Arguello two times... plus some other very decent fighters!... :x

I don't know... The Ring fell in love with Basillio back then. Also, Basillio was very durable and not a clean KO puncher. His fights were very exciting but I like the thrill of knowing that a fight with a Julian Jackson can be over in the blink of an eye one way or another.

Silkov, we both agree he was very good, it's always been a matter of degree's between my enthusiasm and others on this site. I just don't think he was quite all some imagine him to be. When his name starts getting bantered about with Robinson, Armstrong, Bennie Leonard, Duran and the "best of the best" I simply disagree.

So the "competent" barb should simply being taken in context.....He was competent.....there...now I've said two nice things about Aaron in the same thread. A record that should stand for quite some time.
