Just wondering if anybody can give me some advice on this.

I'm considering bringing my SLR camera along to the boxing to build up some experience and test my skills.

Does anybody know how to go about getting a pass for doing this? Using the York Hall as an example, are the passes provided by the promotors or the TV companies or are a certain number of them given out to specific newspapers/websites etc? Or are they purchased, then allowing the photographer to sell them?

The York Hall would be perfect for starting out as I could easily get a place on the balcony right above the ring with a general admission. But what about further down the line and getting right up beside the ring (or getting to the balcony in the York Hall on a quiet night when it's closed off to general admission) - has anybody here done that before?

why not try an amateur show first. they are less strict than pro shows.

You have to get yourself tied in with a local news paper or UK boxing website ( ask around ) get the ok from them ( and send them the photos after ) then call promoter and say you taking photos for such and such paper / website - then you'll likely get a press pass.

Otherwise there's no chance of them letting you up front.

If you have a long lens, it is possible to get yourself a photographers pass, I've managed to get one before for someone who was coming to take some photographs for a piece. However, as rightly stated, getting one at ringside is another matter altogether, they are a lot harder to come by and are strictly for people doing a job of work. Most are very well established photographers in the print media, and some of the younger guys are freelance (like Mr Will).

Thanks for the info guys. I do have a long lens which should be perfectly useful from the balcony somewhere like the York Hall. Maybe I'll give that a go first and take it from there.
